Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

It was 32 degrees in my bedroom last night and somehow DD 9mo slept fine???

Not looking forward to today. Going to move as little as possible.

Gosh so very hot last night. House feels stifling already. Even opening everything early hours doesn’t seem to have made a difference - am thinking I now need to close on the east side as it already feels hot outside

I slept with everything open downstairs last night and got it down to 24 degrees. Just shut everything up already as it definitely helped keep the house cooler yesterday.

KittyCatsby · 19/07/2022 07:24

As heat rises , my suggestion is open your loft / attic hatches. It will help to take the heat out.

GloriaSmud · 19/07/2022 07:25

I had a better night than I thought I was going to have but FosterDog was restless. Was already 20C outside at 6am and it's now 25.8C. And that's the thing about today - we're already starting off from a warm temperature so it's going to heat up rapidly.
My condolences to those that have lost the furry people of their families - I've been there too.

mcallister · 19/07/2022 07:26

I'm working outdoors again today. Yesterday wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was just my journey home on a busy train with no air conditioning that was horrible. After that just being in the garden was a relief and I slept ok. I'm not concerned about today but not looking forward to the journey home. Although a baking hot train is preferable to a cancelled one.

Cakeandcoffee93 · 19/07/2022 07:26

Send help today. Type one diabetic barely slept since 3am been vomiting with a nasty bug my daughter gave me from nursery 😭😭 it’s burnt my throat- can’t keep anything down. On the hottest day of the year. Can’t even keep an ice lolly down. Pray for me lol

QuebecBagnet · 19/07/2022 07:26

We had a fan last night, I normally don’t like it because of the noise, but it made a massive difference. Had a good night’s sleep.

Iwantsunshine · 19/07/2022 07:28

Have people shut windows and drawn curtains now?

my house started at 29 (upstairs this morning) managed to get my sons room (he’s 21 months) down to 27 and have shut his windows and closed curtains :(

Dreading today, tbh last night was the worst, we have a south west facing garden and so our rooms get baked in the afternoon and evening sun :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 07:30

Good Morrow fine people!

Or something like that. I see that active thunderstorms have moved into the far SW. This marks the boundary of change between the extreme heat and fresher, moister air. It will be fascinating to watch the transition.

It will be slow to move in though, only reaching, for example a stripe stretching from Bangor to the Isle of Wight by 4pmish and the London area around 8pm, Cambridge area by very approximately 10pm. Don't hold too fast to those timings.

There may be cloud moving in in advance of the front which would inhibit top temperatures, but in general, the forecasts from yesterday still stand.

Top temperature spots:Approx around Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire areas would be my guess.

@CrunchyCarrot I am so so sorry I hope you are doing ok ❤. Yes, we are equally distraught. It is our third cat yet I am so upset. What makes it even worse is our second cat adored him and has been going in and out to the kittens fave places and meowing looking for him. I've been crying thinking what I could have done differently but it's no use, he's gone. I hate this weather!

I don't think it matters how many cats one has had, it hurts every time. This was the fifth cat we've lost over the years, he was only 2 though so it feels like he never got to live his life. His brother is missing him and is very lonely at night and has been meowing a lot. So combine that with the heat and it's been very difficult, as I'm sure you can understand. I think he was a bit better last night, I got him to settle after 2 a.m. then he was quiet. I couldn't sleep though as it was stifling!

Although there's no point going over what happened and dissecting it (although I totally get it, I have done similarly over past pets), I think it's all part of the grieving process, we just have to go through it. <3

I'll update you on what my thermometre shows. I'm currently sat on the patio working, on the basis my brain is likely to stop about 11am, and I could be in Southern Europe somewhere. On the plus side, I have tomatoes and courgettes ripening in front of my eyes, almost.

@CrunchyCarrot I'm so sorry.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 19/07/2022 07:37

I've decided that I'm getting ALL of my weather-related info from you from now on OP

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 07:37

I'm so sorry @marblemad and @CrunchyCarrot , it hits you really really hard.
I keep checking our cat anxiously..

Oh no @Cakeandcoffee93 please don't be afraid to ask for help early. Perhaps it might be worth messaging your gp for advice?

Same.
Are there Mumsnet awards for services to the community? You definitely deserve one Kitten 🙂
25 degrees here already on Surrey/Hants border which is an hour earlier than when it reached that yesterday 😩

CrunchyCarrot · 19/07/2022 07:44

Thanks OYBBK. I believe you can stroke a cat with a damp cloth or damp hands to help cool it down since they don't sweat, but cool themselves via licking their fur. Haven't tried it on mine yet, he insists on rolling in the dirt! Vanished for half of yesterday, no doubt found a cool bush to sleep under!

I hope you feel better soon, @Cakeandcoffee93. Flowers

GloriaSmud · 19/07/2022 07:47

Lightning maps website so that we can see how far those thunderstorms have got.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 07:48

Id rather people relied on the met office Grin but thank you!

Im not sure as to what extent we will get thunderstorms along the cold front. It certainly looks lively as they enter England, but, for me at least, impossible to know whether they will die away and then pep up along the line at times. I'll keep an eye on it.

I agree! Thank you so much OYBBK

Condolences to those who have lost pets 😔
Hoochydog is enjoying soaked kibble, stock lollies and will have a shower today to get some malaseb on for her itchybits.

Keep as cool as you can 😎

Iamclearlyamug · 19/07/2022 07:49

30C at 6am here! I'm not sending DD to school as they have huge glass walls and the place is like a greenhouse. Day indoors for us!

Decided to drag out the air mattresses and have a sleepover in the living room with the kids. We had the front window open, the French doors wide open and a fan in the middle...

Reader...

I woke up far too cold and had to go get my quilt 🤣

It's already 25 here (South Somerset/Dorset border) and I'm eagerly watching the skies for the clouds rolling in. We are only (hah) predicted highs of 31 today as opposed to yesterdays 36.

Motorina · 19/07/2022 07:52

Agree with the praise to OYBBK. Clear, helpful, and lets me knoww hat to look out for.

27 here east of Cambridge. Full sun, zero clouds. Sky perhaps a bit bluer than yesterday? Dead still - no breeze.

I've hung blankets on the outside of those windows where I can, and curtains shut inside.

Motorina · 19/07/2022 07:53

Discovereads · 19/07/2022 06:42

The roads are fine.

Thankyou - that's really reassuring. I'd been worried.

Tiggertum · 19/07/2022 07:53

@stillherenow my oldest DS the same! Insisting on going as meets his new teacher. Finishes at 1.30.

Tiggertum · 19/07/2022 07:56

I’m crossing everything that the cool front gets here for at least 8. Please weather gods make it so!!

daisypond · 19/07/2022 07:57

I’m in London and I found the house pleasantly cool yesterday, compared to outside. We had all blinds and curtains closed , and we have thick lined curtains, so I’m sure that helped. We have the windows open a tiny amount, but I’m not sure if that actual makes it worse. We don’t have any air con.
