Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

@ErrinThatsMe same here!! Warm walls that have never been warm before! And warm carpets. I’ve put my sandals in in the house because it’s so uncomfortable walking around on warm carpet. The room with laminate floor the floor is warm too but the kitchen is tiled, the tiles aren’t cold like usual but at least they’re not warm. If this is going to be the norm in future I think we’ll need to think about saving up to tile more downstairs rooms and get rugs for winter rather than carpet.

ComDummings · 19/07/2022 06:47

What a sweaty night! I notice the humidity doubled overnight. I don’t mind high temperatures when the humidity is low, though. Today is going be be horrible but tomorrow will be a relief!

CaveMum · 19/07/2022 06:47

Morning all, horrible nights sleep here too. Currently 26 degrees downstairs and pushing 28 upstairs. Windows and patio doors thrown open to try and get the fractionally cooler air in, but it already feels like the heat is building again so they’ll have to be shut shortly 😫

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 06:48

Just to clarify I wasn't just making the dog comfortable, I was making sure he stayed alive. He's a large breed and one of the riskiest for heat stroke

Narwhalelife · 19/07/2022 06:49

I’m just about to finish a night shift and can confirm it was indeed super hot, sticky all night.

I have a community based role (even through the night) and never had yet had to have the car air con going at 1am - but last night was a first.

Now to try and sleep all day ready for another one tonight 🥵😵‍💫

SpaghettiSquash · 19/07/2022 06:50

I've already had to shut windows and doors at 6:30am as the temperature indoors was starting to rise. It's going to be unbearable today and DD has her prom this evening 🥵

Ooh just woken up and seen the outrage about the dog! I didn't bring him up as it was even hotter upstairs plus I do not want him to start doing that because our stairs are so steep and when he gets old he won't manage (and I'll end up having to sleep downstairs) .

I slept all night no probs. Even had to get under the duvet at one piping. DD woke at 3am too hot and I went and retrieved one of the fans and she went straight back to sleep.

The dog was panting and struggling and he can die in too much heat whereas humans tend to sweat - and the usb fan isn't tiny , it's ok and dd was asleep within 5 mins of having it on. If she had struggled I'd probs have brought both fans and the dog to her room of course - but rest assured I didn't leave her struggling!!

But yes I do need more fans!!

I would have done the same!

We have a fan just for the dog as she becomes really unsettled in heat, but if we didn't I wouldn't be able to fall asleep anyway if I knew she was unsettled downstairs without one as I would be worried about her. Dogs aren't able to regulate their heat like we do.

You have my vote - We have 2 large breed black & dark brown dogs and they have been a priority all the time!

but I did stock up in fans! Lol

We were coping ok yesterday UNTIL a swarm of wasps decided it was a good day to move house, chewed some holes into our garage roof, and made themselves completely at home!

There are now hundreds of them flying around in our back garden, and God knows how many more in the roof space but we can hear the buzzing. So we've not only been avoiding the garden, but have kept all the windows/doors on the (south-facing and massively overheated) back of our house closed since we discovered them! Hoping we can get someone to come and evict them today.

Feel like I've spent the night in a sauna. Trying to look on the bright side, I gave up attempting to sleep at 3:30am and did 2 hrs of housework while it was cool. Knackered now though :)

Hello!

What a f**king night! No fan, 4 month old feeding limpet baby and due to living right on the coast, the clangoring cacophony of nesting seagulls keeping us awake all night due to all our windows open.

Roll on tomorrow!

We're on the coast on holiday;thé bastard seagulls are so loud.

It's going to get up to 30 here today;admittedly we're not overly fussed as in the city we live we've been experiencing 27-30 for the last few weeks;I'm glad we're here as where I ive is due to get to 38/39 today

Seagulls here too and we are about as far from the coast as you can get. We also get fireworks at 1am, revving motorbikes and general drunk people noises.

daffodilandtulip · 19/07/2022 06:59

I like to air the bed in the day so it's cold when you jump in. Last night it felt like there had been hot water bottles in it 😩. Slept ok though with the windows open, but then you have the inevitable 4am wakening to sun and birds.

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 07:00

@LimesandClementines and @Narwhalelife thank you!
I've just been researching air conditioners and there's a recommended one I can go and pick up locally but it's £400 and I don't think I can quite stretch to that yet, but maybe a plan for next year, it's dehumidifier as well which I'm guessing will be helpful this winter with less heating on. Yes selfishly a part of my thinking was that I'd get a better asleep if the dog wasn't unsettled wandering about

I actually can't sleep with any fans on. I'm a bad sleeper with noise but luckily summer heat isn't too bad for me sleep wise

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 07:01

Well, I slept well when I eventually went to bed. The flat is currently 29 degrees c felt cooler with the windows open. But temperatures outside are beginning to rise. Kids still asleep. Evicted a wasp.
I stayed up to do some washing up in the relative cool near the window.

We only have one fan. DS has it. His room is hottest.

Going back to sleep then will take kids to their dad's.

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 07:03

DD is going to school, I've tried to persuade her to stay off but she won't. Next stage is to commence battle to at least leave the house wearing a hat (she's a red head ). I'll collect her at 1.

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2022 07:04

Just seen about the kitten. Poor little thing.

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 07:09

@marblemad please don't feel bad. I had a loved cat for 20 years and never did a thing for it in hot weather (and you've seen how nutty I am about the dog - I loved the cat more !!) - ii didn't even keep her in. It sounds like there was something underlying there and maybe nothing you could have done ? Sending hugs x

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/07/2022 07:09

am off to work today
in an office with plenty of fans, not as hot as being at home but too hot to leave the building by the sounds of things

Randommother · 19/07/2022 07:10

I gave up at 3am and went and slept in the garden - I just hope I didn’t disturb the neighbours with my snoring!

lollipoprainbow · 19/07/2022 07:10

Urgh woken up feeling horrible, stifling hot and headachey.

Eumy · 19/07/2022 07:11

Another person here who slept poorly! Between the heat and worrying about my 6month old baby I barely slept. We were going to move him into his own room but decided to wait until after the heatwave!

I managed to keep the house reasonably cool yesterday at 24 with windows and blinds shut. However my partner came home from work and said ‘oh it’s not that bad’ and opened all the windows and doors. I watched the thermometer go up to 29 in moments! I don’t know how I’ll cope today as the house isn’t even starting off cool 😭

wetotter · 19/07/2022 07:12

I have the windows open now, as temperature feels a little less hot outside and I want a change of air to the house. Once I finished my Brew it'll be time to start closing them!

its a degree hotter than same time yesterday, and DDog is going to work with DH today, because he says its cooler than the house and she'll enjoy having a nose around and being petted by so many people that she won't care that it's no walkies at all today, just a few mins outdoors at intervals to allow for toileting

MarshaBradyo · 19/07/2022 07:14

Going by yesterday

House was fine during the day
School very good due to set up in nursery
Garden in shade nice

School walk home, ten minutes but can take longer, worked better with a light coloured umbrella for dc - a few others had the same

The tricky part is the dc room temp for four year old - at 28C. I turned fan off and checked a fair few times before going to sleep late as it was so warm

Same here. Yesterday morning felt ok and as if I was cooling down the house a bit but it’s already sunny and stuffy here so will close them in a bit. Going to be a loooong day, on poor sleep.

I’m never one to usually do this and send my kids into school in all weathers but as I’m wfh today I’m keeping them off. It’s a 15-20 minute walk there or back, I bled money on taxis yesterday to get them around, but I can’t today. Most parents here seem to only be sending them in for the morning and collecting them for the afternoon at home, but we are fortunate they are all local infant schools.

TokyoSushi · 19/07/2022 07:18

Morning gang!

Just lying on my bed, need to get the DC up for school in a minute, currently 29.6 in my bedroom 😭

I detect a definite sense of people feeling miserable this morning, sick of the heat after a terrible nights sleep.

One more day, we can do it!

I'm just about to look through my 'holiday drawer' and literally dress as if I were in Greece or somewhere today.
