Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

Hello!

What a f**king night! No fan, 4 month old feeding limpet baby and due to living right on the coast, the clangoring cacophony of nesting seagulls keeping us awake all night due to all our windows open.

Roll on tomorrow!

The windows open thing is always worse in reality. There can't be many people for whom that doesn't introduce a lot of noise into the house!

I live quite near a busy road, and on the main drag into a large new build estate. The main road sounds so loud this morning! I'd say it was wind direction but there's no wind!

27 degrees in the living room this morning and sun coming round already.

badgerbognor · 19/07/2022 05:52

Up at 5 am and opened all doors and windows to try and get some cooler air in the house before needing to shut and cover everything again.

peridito · 19/07/2022 05:54

@marblemad and @CrunchyCarrot I'm so sorry Flowers

Discover I would do exactly the same .The dog can't help himself to cold drinks or flannels ,can't sweat .The humans will survive but the dog might not .
Maybe you don't have a loved pet who is a member of your family but can't you imagine how you'd feel if it was suffering and you ignored it ?
And those little USB fans are actually quite good .

SpamhappyTootsie · 19/07/2022 05:57

I can’t even tell if it’s cooler outside than downstairs now. Feel like I’m wading through treacle already 😞

ElspethBoomingHowsen · 19/07/2022 05:58

I’m just about to head out on a 12.5 hour shift on a normally obscenely hot maternity ward. Wish me luck!

We’re normally quite good at cooling the house, kept it reasonably comfortable yesterday but this morning it seems like it’s heated up overnight, the indoor walls feel warm and the carpets feel warm underfoot 😩 I can’t get the temperature down and realise I’ll have to close all the windows soon. Really looking forward to tomorrow.

On my word, poor you & the ladies giving birth. Good luck 😬

I’d be lying if I said I am looking forward to it… just no idea how to keep myself, my women and babies comfortable 😩

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 19/07/2022 06:13

Temperature is creeping up here so ive just shut all windows at the back of the house which gets the sun all morning, will shut the front of the house up in a little while too. Managed to keep the house fairly cool all day yesterday but last night was horrific.

Ds bedroom is the loft extension and i couldnt get it below 32 degrees so he ended up in our room at midnight, weve got an air cooler and 2 fans going in there as there were 3 of us and DDog in there and its 28 degrees at the moment. DD's room has stayed at 27 degrees despite having the windows wide open over night and the fan going.

Im dreading today 😞 its youngest DD last day at preschool which is air conditioned so she will be fine, DD and DS's school are rotating in the ICT suite all day as its the only air conditioned room. They came out looking quite cool yesterday so im going to send them in. Ddog and i will be hiding in the lounge in front of a fan where it will hopefully be cool.

Met office showing we may have a thunder storm tonight in my part of kent with it leaving behind cooler temperatures. I really hope so 🙏

Whinge · 19/07/2022 06:15

I can't believe how hot it feels. It's only 6am and it's already unbearable. 🥵

marriednotdead · 19/07/2022 06:19

I have relatives in Melbourne where it is currently winter and 7C.
They just advised attaching a wet (obviously not dripping) tea towel to the fan. Also using a spray bottle to mist water just above you whilst in front of the fan. It’s been a very long night so I shall be doing both of those!

50mg · 19/07/2022 06:23

I didn't find yesterday too bad. I work in a non airconditioned office, but we followed advice and kept blinds and windows closed and it was OK. I went and did the shopping (in aircon) on my way home. Curtains and windows had been closed all day at home and it was OK at 5:30pm, but seemed to get worse, stickier, as the evening progressed with no real relief, even outdoors at 11pm.

I've opened all the windows now and will close them before I go to work, but there's no real cool air, even at this time like there was yesterday, so I am worried about today.

Motorina · 19/07/2022 06:24

Sorry, I hadn't twigged there was a thread for today - copied from the previous one:

Comparing today's forecast with yesterday's, what strikes me isn't that it's hotter. It is, but only by a degree or so. But that it hits 35 much much earlier, stays at peak temp much longer, and cools down much later. Yesterday was bad, and we only had a couple of hours at peak hot. Today is going to be beyond imagining.

No fan, and two dogs decided that they had to sleep in the bed. I have had very little sleep and am meant to be being polite to difficult people today.

Motorina · 19/07/2022 06:26

Does anyone know how the roads held up in practice please? I have to go to a vets appointment at 5pm, 45 minutes drive away along a dual carriage way. It's pretty important so I don't want to cancel unless 100% necessary. Thankyou.

Sorry to be totally dim but willing to try anything…. Where do you attach it? Over the front so the air has to blow through it?

You what Confused

So the dog got two fans? Humans none!
You could have brought the dog in with you for one night surely?

ErrinThatsMe · 19/07/2022 06:35

Last night was horrendous. None of us could get comfortable enough to sleep. Dc will be going to school today even though they have the option to stay home. It will be cooler for them at school and I still need to go to work.

My bed is next to the wall and usually in the morning I like to rest my arm on the cold wall. Today the wall is warm. In the 20 years I have lived here this wall has never felt even slightly warm! And it's only 6:30am.

marblemad · 19/07/2022 04:06

My kitten died partially due to the heat yesterday, I am utterly devastated. We tried everything to ensure he was safe. I hate this weather.

I’m so sorry 😞

NCHammer2022 · 19/07/2022 06:39

A fractured night sleep in the living room. Currently have every window and door open before it gets too warm outside again. Tyne & Wear metro system is buggered due to the heat (overhead lines sagging apparently) so that’s cemented my decision to work from home again.

Tiggertum · 19/07/2022 06:40

Gosh so very hot last night. House feels stifling already. Even opening everything early hours doesn’t seem to have made a difference - am thinking I now need to close on the east side as it already feels hot outside

lanbro · 19/07/2022 06:42

My bedroom is downstairs and gets no sun on it at all so no problems sleeping. Working in a kitchen yesterday though was horrendous and I've taken the decision to close my business today for the comfort of my staff

The roads are fine.

BooseysMom · 19/07/2022 06:43

Thanks for your sterling work OYBBK.

I echo this.

26 degrees here but there's cool air thru the window. Not going anywhere today as school closed and car playing up. Another day in the cave to look forward to 😅

Unless the dog is some northern arctic breed like a husky, it will be more than fine. And I don’t think leaving it with one fan instead of two fans while humans go without any fans is exactly ignoring it.

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 06:46

Ooh just woken up and seen the outrage about the dog! I didn't bring him up as it was even hotter upstairs plus I do not want him to start doing that because our stairs are so steep and when he gets old he won't manage (and I'll end up having to sleep downstairs) .

I slept all night no probs. Even had to get under the duvet at one piping. DD woke at 3am too hot and I went and retrieved one of the fans and she went straight back to sleep.

The dog was panting and struggling and he can die in too much heat whereas humans tend to sweat - and the usb fan isn't tiny , it's ok and dd was asleep within 5 mins of having it on. If she had struggled I'd probs have brought both fans and the dog to her room of course - but rest assured I didn't leave her struggling!!

But yes I do need more fans!!
