We need to talk about the weather and the potential for extreme heat - RED WARNING issued

So we need to talk weather and climate.

You might have seen some lurid headlines about extreme temperatures in 10 days time. These are based on some of the ensemble members of the GFS model runs.

GFS is one weather model. It runs 4 times a day. Each run consists of several parallel versions running with slightly different starting conditions (perturbations).

For several days now some of these have been showing widespread temperatures of 41C. We've never seen temperatures modelled above 40C for the UK before. The UK record for the actual temperature is 38.7c .

A big big however though! Most of the ensemble members are showing temperatures rather lower than this - low to mid 30's c. so at the moment these extreme temperatures remain unlikely. Not impossible though.

From a climate point of view, we have, in my opinion reached a tipping point where such extremes are now theoretically possible in our local climate. This is extremely alarming. I know the world and our country are full of alarming issues, this is one of them.

I'll keep this thread updated over the next few days.

It's bonkers. Seriously, if you need to send your children to school, or if you live in an airless flat with no garden, send them in, we'll do our best. Quality learning won't happen though!

@swallowedAfly Take a brolly for in the Car Park.

justasking111 · 18/07/2022 10:03

I've just checked the weather forecast for the weekend and into next week it's looking hot again

Grumpybutfunny · 18/07/2022 10:04

DD dropped at school as he wanted to go, will pick him up at 3pm for paddling pool time. Hot tub is turned down, washing is on the line and the bikini is ready. It's actually quite windy in the north east so doesn't feel that warm

Thanks for the sympathy! It does help in the face of mn'ers telling us it's just summer get over it and why do we think we're so special? Grin

Poor bloody kids who've been made to come in. I actually don't start till 11 today so am still at home and grateful for the umbrella advice! Must.not.forget! Forecast is now saying it will be 36 degrees at the end of the school day and that that is the peak for us - tomorrow predicting a high of 37. We shall see.

Sympathy to you too Maireas - you need way more of it than me if you're full time. I've just logged on and the three classes I'm teaching today have an average of 13 out of 30 students present so they can at least spread out a bit and behaviour should be easier to manage. I'd be more than a bit pissed off if I was one of the 13 year olds forced by parents to go to school and boil unnecessarily today so I shall try to be very kind to my classes!

stillherenow · 18/07/2022 11:12

My dd chose to go in! Crazy child. She and the option to sit at home in her pants in front of a fan.

RockandRollsuicide · 18/07/2022 11:20

Swallowed a fly,it does amaze me especially with younger DC that it's not recognised, the sheer weight of responsibilities on one person's shoulder's!

In a class of 7 year olds how can a teacher monitor them all closely whilst also perhaps feeling too hot!

RockandRollsuicide · 18/07/2022 11:21

"another round" this extreme?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 11:36

Not this extreme and no model consensus yet, so hopefully unlikely.

My eldest DS also insisted on going in ( SEN and the HT had said it’s important they come in even when hot - so he now thinks this is a rule which must be obeyed). Finish at 1.30 though.

He is staying off tomorrow definitely.

youngest currently playing jungle book on repeat - so that’s the soundtrack I’m working to atm … ( and very much appreciating that I’m able to wfh and keep youngest off).

Piggywaspushed · 18/07/2022 11:37

In some ways, I hope it does get really hot again, if only to shut the 'it's only two days' mob up!

LaChatte · 18/07/2022 11:39

This morning's models saying 45⁰ possible next week for us ☹ . We had over 41⁰ Saturday and yesterday. Today's well underway to he the same. Local fires mostly under control, but as you may have seen on the news there are 2 huge fires in the south west which are catastrophic, around 16 000 people have been evacuated so far.

stillherenow · 18/07/2022 11:41

Where is getting a heat wave next week? It's not showing that all for me !

stillherenow · 18/07/2022 11:42

My dd is 14 so leaving it up to her if she wants to go in tomorrow. I'll collect her at 1, the sun is beating down and too hot for walking a mile with no shade.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 18/07/2022 11:43

It isn't hot here in yeovil in Somerset. I'm working here today. I was expecting the apocalypse.

Yeah, I have one of those in my house. Keeps coming downstairs and mocking my jerry-rigged sunshades over every window.

But he's boiling in his room and I'm contemplating getting my cardigan out here.

GloriaSmud · 18/07/2022 12:30

My weather station says it's 33.8C at the moment. Temperature in the house is 28.2C, which is about bearable. DH and DD2 have commandeered the only fans we have as they're working in their rooms. FosterDog is just attempting to find all the cool places in the house.

MarshaBradyo · 18/07/2022 12:37

34C here 26.6C in the house which is fine, feels pleasant enough

Have switched to ice coffee so nice, I’d forgotten how good it was

HuffleWoof · 18/07/2022 13:42

Our basement is 18 degrees and is where we watch tv so I'm dragging the spare bed mattress downstairs to sleep there tonight because our bedroom is more like 29!

CaveMum · 18/07/2022 13:49

34 here right now on Suffolk/Cambs border. There’s actually a bit of a breeze so that is helping a bit.
