I am a bit concerned about this one. Widespread gusts to 60mph, but reaching 80mph in parts of the NE. Winds from a NW direction will bring down more trees than you would expect for this level of gusts as it is an unusual direction.

That's a good point about power loss. I'm charging up our rechargeable lamp.

OrangeSamphire · 26/11/2021 16:55

We’re on the coast in Cornwall, I think we’re in an amber warning. Scaffolding around the house and a load of building rubble on the deck. Shite.

A worrying amount of outages near us! Confused Got the tea lights ready and we are having an early takeaway!

TheCanyon · 26/11/2021 17:13

@OhYouBadBadKitten

If you store stuff in your lofts and are in the very exposed part of the red warning, can I suggest that your bring anything precious out of it, or at least move it from underneath ridge tiles and from the gable ends of buildings where tiles tend to be more exposed.

If you can put wheels bins in garages that would be sensible.

Really weight down trampolines, remove safety nets and if it is possible, turn them upside down.

Wait, so I can get rid of my loft contents without a skip? Bargain!

It's fair windy here, a friend said gusts of 64, need to go a wee walk pick up dd from her friends.

RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 17:14

DD is in Newcastle and has just messaged to say that it is snowing. Here in South Yorkshire we have sleet forecast.

oakleaffy · 26/11/2021 17:32

One terrific storm we had Ciara ? {Feb 2019?...It was a Sunday night, and I had Norovirus come on suddenly... I opened the window in the bathroom to get some fresh air, and the tarpaulin covers tied to a neighbour's roof scaffolding was being torn to flinders with an incredible noise, while the house shook.. The wind ripped that tarp up into streamers in no time at all.
It reminded me of being in a storm at sea in a sailing ship, the noise and the shaking.
The winds can be quite ferocious.
I hope people are safe on the roads and at Sea.

Storm Ciara ripped our neighbour's tarps that were put on the scaffolding to shreds, but the actual scaffolding was ok. if it has the sheet metal ''Roof'' that too should be ok, scaffolders generally know what they are doing.

Lot of power cuts in North East Scotland. My mum is eating dinner by torch light. A little concerned as she recently moved from a home which had a wood burning stove to one which is reliant on gas & electric. So lack of heating may become an issue if the power cut lasts a long time.

Perihelion · 26/11/2021 18:18

Having seen trampoline carnage from hurricane Bawbag, I would suggest trampoline owners, either tie them to sturdy, big trees or remove the netting and the jumping surface. In 80mph gusts, it's pretty impossible to weigh them down.
It's windy at the moment, but not mentally so.
The A1 is shut between Dunbar and Haddington, to stop lorries getting blown over.

Waitwhat23 · 26/11/2021 18:41

@Perihelion there's apparently massive tailbacks at Haddington and Dunbar due to it being closed. Someone said they'd been stuck for over an hour.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2021 18:41
Blush

It's sounding like it's getting pretty rough for some of you.

Please, please don't travel in a red zone.

My very very rough and unofficial rule of thumb is:
If it's red, stay put, take it extremely seriously. Prepare for prolonged disruption.

If it's amber, don't travel unless essential. Take it very seriously. Put everything away in the garden. Prepare for power cuts.

If it's yellow, don't walk in woodland, tidy up things you don't want to go wandering. Don't get aim to take the last train home! Be sensible, don't take risks.

And I just heard a neighbour's wheelybin being blasted along the street at speed!

DementedPanda · 26/11/2021 18:50

Blizzard here in Northumberland Shock

magentastardust · 26/11/2021 18:55

North East Scotland here, Schools had to close around 2pm. No power and lots of trees on roads. Staying cosy and lighting lots of candles !

DementedPanda · 26/11/2021 18:58

Our windows!

Thefuturestory · 26/11/2021 18:58

Good luck all. I’m probably as far as you can get away from the red zone but it’s blowing strong here and it’s so cold. Batten down the hatches.

DementedPanda · 26/11/2021 19:03

Now we have thunder and lightning

GrouchyKiwi · 26/11/2021 19:19

Our trampoline isn't shifting but we've had to make another dash to take stuff to the garage, and one of the sheets of trellising has come off our fence, dammit. We're in the worst of the forecast winds for us now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2021 19:20

@DementedPanda

Our windows!
Brrrrr.

MyMoneyIsAllSpent · 26/11/2021 19:27

I'm in Co. Durham and I swear I heard thunder earlier! We have a gale but that's not new! Some snow. Hoping it improves as I really need to get to work tomorrow. I'm a carer and we are already short staffed. Fingers crossed it doesn't snow any more! Stay safe and warm everyone.

feellikeanalien · 26/11/2021 19:31

Wind and sleet here in Northumberland. We're not costal , fairly close to the Scottish border, and the wind is strong but not excessively so. We are in a valley though. DDs school taxi driver said the snow was lying on the higher ground but I think it's too wet here.

OrangeSamphire · 26/11/2021 19:31

Thanks @oakleaffy that’s reassuring about the scaffolding!

We are south coast and I think this is a northerly? Is that right @OhYouBadBadKitten? If so hopefully we won’t get too battered here as our house is built into the hillside so we’re protected from the north. Just massively exposed to the south with nothing between us and France!

Justmuddlingalong · 26/11/2021 19:33

Currently sporting a bump on my forehead. Stupidly went out to lift neighbour's bin, the wind caught the lid and smacked me on the face. I swear I had the circle of birds tweeting round my head like the cartoons. 🤪

OxanaVorontsova · 26/11/2021 19:38

Also Co Durham @MyMoneyIsAllSpent and we heard thunder too!

beastlyslumber · 26/11/2021 19:52

Very windy in Edinburgh but so far no drama as far as we can tell... am scared about my car/windows/roof tiles though!
