I am a bit concerned about this one. Widespread gusts to 60mph, but reaching 80mph in parts of the NE. Winds from a NW direction will bring down more trees than you would expect for this level of gusts as it is an unusual direction.

@Perihelion

We're predicted to get up to 63mph gusts, which for Edinburgh normally doesn't alway warrant a weather warning. But this isn't even a NW wind, it's a Northerly Shock It's going to be Baltic. Got an Amber wind warning from 3pm tomorrow until 9am Saturday. Hello winter Grin
Ugh! I'm in Edinburgh. Thank goodness my central heating is fixed!!
beastlyslumber · 26/11/2021 14:03

It was so lovely in Edinburgh this morning, I thought Arwen might just pass us by with a wave... It's picking up a bit now, though.

Storm Arwen a lovely name for a girl, OP!!!

AlphabetAerobics · 26/11/2021 14:11

Baltic up here on the islands - nothing between my front door and Santa. 😂

Been roping up the wheelie bins, considered putting a brick on top - but would rather deal with a broken bin lid than windscreen!

DowntonCrabby · 26/11/2021 14:15

I’m in Aberdeen, it was snowing and windy earlier, went completely bright and calm for the last hour and now it’s really starting up. It would seem “calm before the storm” is a real thing.

Stay safe all xx

Bobbobbobbing · 26/11/2021 14:20

NE here, 3 miles from the coast. Am a teeny bit worried as we are currently without a conservatory roof after the bastard builders took the old one off before informing us that the new glass was delayed there is currently a tarp covering it which is battened down across the whole width and length, but it is making me twitchy. Thankfully it is on the south and most sheltered part of the house.

Trees not moving much yet, but I can hear the wind in the chimney.

PainterInPeril · 26/11/2021 14:22

I'm in the West country so I'm hoping we'll be ok. But thinking of you all up North. I hope you manage to stay safe and don't have to cope with too much inconvenience.

I'm starting to like Arwen as a baby name too!Grin

Level75 · 26/11/2021 14:32

@Perihelion she's insisting on going but is now taking the inland route and has taken her DD out of school early.

Welshiefluff · 26/11/2021 14:47

I’ve already been out to move a small potted tree into a sheltered (ish) spot, put bricks on the wheelie bins and take down the solar lights we have in the garden. It’s pretty wild in aberdeen already (and trying v.hard to snow) and the severe weather warning doesn’t actually start until later this afternoon

If you are in the red zone are you sure lone bricks in elevated positions are the best idea? Have you got any masking tape or string instead?

Level75 · 26/11/2021 15:10

I wondered about putting wheelie bins on their sides if they are not too full.

For keeping an eye on gusts.

Blowing a gale here in the 'red zone' in coastal Aberdeenshire. Picking up DD from nursery and then battening down the hatches for the evening. Hope everyone stays safe!!

RIPWalter · 26/11/2021 15:47

I'm in North Wales, so on an amber warning.

However where we are the wind direction we fear is Easterlies as we get a very localised katabatic wind effect from the mountain behind us (beast from the east was an interesting 24 hours!!). Also have a BTL on the coast but just checked the tides and it's neap on Monday, so should be nothing to worry about for my tenants there.

Thanks for the reminder I've just been out and dragged my large potted bay tree, and planter with Mediterranean herbs into a shelter spot.

Following this one as a long-standing admirer of @OhYouBadBadKitten and hope all those in the firing zone stay safe

MrsSquirrel · 26/11/2021 16:06

Another OYBBK fan placemarking.

My friend who is meant to be taking the sleeper train from London to Inverness may be staying here tonight.

WinterIcelandicPony · 26/11/2021 16:12

@SleepingStandingUp

I thought this was a names thread for a moment.
also! Arwen is a lovely name.

This means our weekend plans will change as otherwise DH and Ds1 mightn get stuck somewhere so i am grateful for the heads up.

Teenagetrouble · 26/11/2021 16:19

Should we avoid driving tonight if in a red zone? Was planning on going locally for a meal

JaninesEyePatch · 26/11/2021 16:21

Yes you are not meant to travel under any circumstances in a red warning

emummy · 26/11/2021 16:23

Ds just spotted our trampoline on the move- it flipped over and rolled down the garden; if it hadn’t hit the clothesline and a bush it would have hit the kitchen window! It’s now wedged in a corner weighed down with spare tires and a bag of sand!

JaninesEyePatch · 26/11/2021 16:23

I am in an Amber zone and meant to be travelling 25 minutes out and back for a non essential evening out. I'm really unsure what to do. I'm a fairly confident driver under normal circumstances but it's very windy now. I think I'd be ok getting there but worried about getting home. Don't know what to do!

JaninesEyePatch · 26/11/2021 16:25

Also right next to the red zone so I'm extra worrying

Waitwhat23 · 26/11/2021 16:26

It's a red warning here and have been sent home from work. Candles ready, electronical things charged, dinner being made early. Wind is wild outside!

uptoongirl · 26/11/2021 16:30

Newcastle here - very windy for the last hour, rain and snow. I have to go out later and I'm not looking forward to it. Have just spent the last hour running round securing all the random building shite that our builder has left in our back garden!

GrouchyKiwi · 26/11/2021 16:35

We're in East Lothian so on the edge of the Red zone. Have already rescued the neighbours' recycling bins.

I hate strong winds. They make me so anxious. I'm hoping, though, that the direction means the at-risk stuff in our garden will be safe since we're somewhat sheltered by next door. Have shifted what we can and weighted down the trampoline with bags of compost. Hopefully that will be sufficient!

DementedPanda · 26/11/2021 16:43

I'm really hoping we don't lose power or there will be carnage in this house 🤣
