Grin

Might as well get going on this thread, though it is rather a tease at the moment.

The ECMWF model is hinting at the possibility of some much colder weather next week, perhaps bringing some snow to Scottish hills. BUT the met office are still going for quite a wild and wet affair instead.
The ECMWF shows quite an interesting scenario really.

East coast Ireland.

We've been having graupal here. Which the media has been getting quite excited about to explain 🤣

We've had a fair amount of light showers over the past 2 days, but not sticking. Woke this morning to a Victoria sponge castor sugar type dusting lying outside on roofs, but grass still totally green (tiny pockets of white down near roots if you walk up close to it).

Forecast is still fior a fair amount today but I am not convinced looking at the sky or rainfall radar. But it is cold!

Perihelion · 10/02/2021 09:24

11cm of snow here in the last place in Edinburgh to usually get snowGrin

The Met Office Amber warning for here ran out at 9pm... heaviest snow, at about 5am.

Coldest night in Altnaharra since Boxing Day 2010 at -17.1C.

WE HAVE SNOW! (yes I am shouting) Finally enough for a good snowman and some sledging - delighted! ❄☃️🌨

@WorraLiberty

Hi, can one of your clever weather watchers answer a question for me please? I've Googled but can't seem to find the answer.

When I look at (in this case) the Met Office weather forecast, it says 'light snow (night)'.

I just wonder why they sometimes say 'night' or 'day' on a selected hour or two?

I've included a screenshot, hope it shows up.

What you’re seeing there is the “tooltip” or description for the image. They are often used by screen readers/accessibility tools. That particular symbol is light snow/part cloud but during the night - hence the moon showing. The same in the day would have a sun symbol. If the cloud is going to be unbroken you see neither a sun or moon. It’s literally just a description of the symbol. Does that make sense?

I feel a bit cheated here in Kent. There was so much hype and “beast from the East 2”, We were on the edge of the Amber warning and the charts really did make it look like a lot of snow was coming... but it has come to absolutely nothing.

Well, we did get snow. In fact, it snowed pretty much continuously from 7am Sunday until mid morning yesterday, but it was just those tiny, icy balls. Not a sausage settled on Sunday, and when it began to settle on Monday, it never developed any depth at all. It was like someone had sprinkled a dusting of icing sugar. What was left entirely melted yesterday when the sun came out for 20 minutes. It’s been snowing all morning again, but it just seems to hang in the air and nothing appears on the ground! It’s frustrating to see so much snow coming out of the sky and have it literally disappear in front of your eyes!

I know it’s good really, because I was worried about people getting to vaccination appointments (and also increased slips and falls putting pressure on A&E) but they closed our local mass vaccination centre anyway, despite the lack of actual snow!!

WorraLiberty · 10/02/2021 10:54

@TheAnswerIsCake, that makes perfect sense.

Thank you!

Conflicting weather forecasts, the weekend especially

Really hoping London is out of the woods by Sunday.

myoho · 10/02/2021 12:14

North Kent again.....Still trapped as road now compacted ice and it is snowing again really heavily, BBC weather says light snow...they lied

Wondering where you are.... also in Kent, currently snowing lots again but still nothing on the ground, it just melts on impact - definitely no risk of being trapped here! The “proper” snow conditions must just be missing us!
myoho · 10/02/2021 12:26

TheAnswerisCake just outside Maidstone. I live down a long windy sloping road and haven't got a hope in hell of getting my car out any time today,

Where are you?

TheAnswerIsCake · 10/02/2021 12:40

@myoho ah, we’re west of Maidstone. To be fair, we almost never get snow here, even when other areas nearby do, so I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s just frustrating to have it falling but not sticking around (it usually doesn’t even fall!)

Driving to work this morning there was news of delays because a tractor had overturned (Scottish Borders) Shock

Furries · 10/02/2021 18:01

The snow is the nicest I’ve seen for ages - probably sounds a bit weird! It just seems really powdery and has a lovely crunch to it when walking on it.

OrangeBananaFish · 10/02/2021 18:54

The snow has not stopped here all day. It seems to have snowed a lot more this winter than usual (North Yorkshire).

I'm really hoping that we're not going to get much more. I need to be able to drive places come the end of Feb/beginning of March. (Obvs I can drive in light snow, but rather not and this year WFH has been a real blessing)

Coldest night in Scotland for 25 years with Braemar reaching -22.9C Shock
Only down to -13C in Edinburgh Grin
It's a beautiful, sparkling, blue sky day.

It looks like now, essentially the snow is petering out. Perhaps a little in the far Sw, before rain moves in today. Some odd snow showers in the NE.

Those in northern areas with plenty of snow about will need to keep an eye on flooding potential as rain sweeps in on Sunday over many lower areas.

I'm in coastal south Devon and we've woken up to our second morning of a light dusting, lovely surprise for the children. We are still having light snow showers now.

BiddyPop · 11/02/2021 10:04

Back to plain green outside here again today in Dublin - bitterly cold and quite windy, there is an ice layer of about 0.5cm on the metal bucket of water in the garden, but I suspect we may not get much in the band sweeping up from the southwest coast as it will get dumped on the mountains first.

Perihelion · 11/02/2021 11:02

It's warmed up a wee bit, but because the sun's blazing and there's absolutely no wind, it feels much warmer. Feels like being up in the AlpsGrin
Breamar finished the night at -23C, which is also the coldest February temp since 1955.
Alex Deakin' s Met Office forecast video yesterday said there was a possibility of freezing rain at the weekend.

LunaHeather · 11/02/2021 11:25

More snow overnight in London. Not much but enough to be annoying.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 11/02/2021 20:53

we finally have snow! Sunday it tried, Monday it basically hurtled snow out of the sky, then brightened, then got darker and hurtled more snow...the very definition of ninja showers!

Tuesday was similar but with only a couple of snow falls and much lighter flakes, but much less wind and yesterday and today have mostly been clear, cold AF lovely blue skies with occasional threatening clouds

DH is off early for work tomorrow so we cleared the end of the drive, he says we are due more snow tomorrow...I told him to pack clean pants in case he gets snowed out!!
