Might as well get going on this thread, though it is rather a tease at the moment.

The ECMWF model is hinting at the possibility of some much colder weather next week, perhaps bringing some snow to Scottish hills. BUT the met office are still going for quite a wild and wet affair instead.
The ECMWF shows quite an interesting scenario really.

Theyve certainly gone traditional again this year!

As this is a busier thread than any others I might start in the next ten mins. There's a risk of some thunderstorms overnight tonight in the south of England and parts of Wales. Lightning, severe gusts of wind, hail and heavy rain are all possible. There's a low chance of a tornado.

Shock That sounds like unusually eventful December weather.

megletthesecond · 14/12/2020 14:18

A tornado would be about the right way to round up 2020. 😬

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2020 14:21

Its not that unusual really. A lot of the UKs tornadic events tend to occur along cold weather fronts. (parts of Surrey can attest to this last December)

I'm updating www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weather/4099735-Christmas-weather-forecast-thread at present rather than trying to write the same thing in two threads.

Snow lovers should probably take a look.

Anyone else wake up to a light dusting of snow this morning? DS was very, very excited!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/12/2020 10:23

That is so lovely Splish
Clear blue skies here and 3c. I'll head out after lunch for a bit of a walk.

i swear we had tiny dusty flakes when i was up at six with the dogface but nothing on the ground at all here

again a very light dusting over some of the fields over the bay, (over to Bervie and Johnners!) and the Grampians look to have a decent covering

Sky is very clear here and it's been really cold all day.

AuntieStella · 25/12/2020 07:23

Just had a pop up saying it's officially a White Christmas after snow in East Yorkshire and Suffolk

The synoptics coming up are very interesting.
Snow showers down the east coast again today. Tomorrow an area of snow is quite likely in parts of Scotland. By the 27th this risk extends to Wales, the NW, Ireland and Northern Ireland, the SW and the Cotswolds.
Perhaps elsewhere too. Severe gales in places.

Through the rest of the week we lie in an unstable air flow with potential for snow showers anywhere. Remaining cold into the foreseeable, with risks of snow, gales at times and freezing fog perhaps.

Happy Christmas!

A good covering of snow in our town in France, and it's due to snow for much of the day.

That's great, except we're in England Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2020 21:39

Maybe some wet snow in Bella but the synoptics in January are very interesting!

All of the models are showing a cold January, different from the last few years. Below average temperatures. At the moment I think easterlies are winning out.

Parts of Scotland are under snow warnings today: www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-12-27

Tonight, into tomorrow we have a messy mix of rain and snow showers that could affect parts of Wales Wales and the Western Midlands (probably) and NW England and central southern England (possibly)

From later today most models show that into the reasonable foreseeable, conditions look to be generally cold enough for snow - we just need the precipitation, in the form of troughs and perhaps from Tuesday polar lows.

One spanner in the works is the GFS model which has gone off on a tangent to other models and is keen today to bring thr atlantic back into play, which is not what anyone wants.

Metoffice long range forecast is hinting at a bit of a cold snap for a few weeks.

31st December-9th January
Generally unsettled conditions will continue during the beginning of this period, with spells of rain, sleet and snow likely across many areas. Any occurrences of snow are likely to be over higher ground, but there is also a chance of snow occurring over lower-level areas that are away from coasts. There is a possibility of drier and more settled conditions developing during this period, primarily across northern parts of the UK, and across areas in the west near the end of the period. At times it will be windy, particularly in western parts at first. Temperatures are likely to be low, feeling cold or rather cold, and bringing a risk of frost, ice and freezing fog.

Saturday 9th-23rd January
Cold or rather cold conditions are generally likely to continue during this period, with a risk of wintry hazards. At times conditions will generally be settled for parts of the north, and possibly extending to western areas too. There are currently no indications of exceptionally cold conditions occurring anywhere; however, some harsh frosts are likely over areas with snow cover. As we approach the end of the month, it is likely that colder-than-average conditions will generally persist through the country, rather than mild, wet and windy weather. However, it is possible for some areas to see milder spells.
