I'm noticing it at the allotment too, normally by the start of August the plants are really well established and it usually rains a reasonable amount in August so I don't really have to water. Not this year, despite torrential rain over the weekend the soil is dry again, plants are spindly and weak, crops are down. I have lots of beautiful 2' high sunflowers! People who plant out earlier than me have done better as their plants were established before the dry spell (before last weekend no proper rain since 31st May). On other years they have been caughf by late frosts and I haven't though, so its swings and roundabouts.

GloriaSmud · 02/08/2018 12:11

For the first time, I've tried growing these at the allotment this year. I pulled them up last night! I've had some beans from them but even with the recent rain and me watering them in the weeks beforehand, several of the plants have died. My pumpkins/squash are doing well though and potatoes are in the 'OK considering they've not had much water' category.

LapdanceShoeshine · 02/08/2018 15:58

United Utilities hosepipe ban lifted for now...

LapdanceShoeshine · 02/08/2018 16:00

“rained off” per the Guardian Grin

Haberpop · 02/08/2018 16:01

Can I ask what the 9th August looks like for Ely, Cambs? My daughter gets married on that day and is currently sweating on the fact that the BBC have forecast rain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/08/2018 18:18

There are signs of a break down at that point. Whether it will come to fruition and whether it will be a prolonged breakdown I'm afraid are 'up in the air' still.

Haberpop · 02/08/2018 18:39

Thank you, I won't tell her just yet, fingers crossed it waits a few hours!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/08/2018 19:22

That's sensible :) there's no point in trying to glean any detail.

colouringinagain · 02/08/2018 20:28

Oh really oybbk! I'm due to go camping in the South West on 10 Aug, would appreciate some sun!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/08/2018 20:41

I wish I could organise it Grin

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/08/2018 20:43

Kent's looking good for next week, low 20s, much better for camping with lots of activities. 😆

magimedi · 02/08/2018 22:18

Whilst I am very aware of all the problems this hot & dry summer has bought, I am just loving the fact that it has given us really high sea temps.

19.9C off Eastbourne today & I am in every day & able to stay in for at leat half an hour or so.

Deep joy - for me.

Have never seen so many people swimming as this summer.

I was amazed that the storms last w/e didn't drop the temperature at all.

Fatbelliedgirl · 02/08/2018 23:31

Looks like the heat this weekend will be short lived - late teens/early twenties next Wednesday onwards with no sign of significant heat returning within the next few weeks.

Silvercatowner · 03/08/2018 08:36

My runner beans have barely set at all

Hmmm.... my sweet peas have had barely any flowers. :(

Skyejuly · 03/08/2018 08:38

My garden is ruined :(

22 here already in Suffolk
Doesn't look like it goes under 25/26 all week. I just want some 22 weather now!

I do like the warmer sea though!

Fountainofchub · 03/08/2018 09:52

25/26 feels practically cool after some of the weather London's had in recent weeks. I can cope until it hits 30, and that's really saying something about how I must have adjusted, as I HATE summer (I've always hated it).

If it's mid-twenties for the rest of August, I'll cope.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2018 12:50

I've really adjusted to this temperature, it's bizarre. I've been working outside all morning doing some pretty physical stuff. dd was finding it too much a bit in the sun, but I felt absolutely fine. Drank loads though. I reckon I must be solar powered.

princesstiasmum · 03/08/2018 14:41

Really bucketing down here, crashing thunder which made me jump, seemed to ease off but came back with a vengeance,
The grass is already looking greener, and growing through again
North east coast
Hoping the sun comes out again after all this,it stared off beautiful this morning

Rebecca36 · 03/08/2018 14:50

Yes: hot, hot and more hot.

flopsyrabbit1 · 03/08/2018 15:44

its 30 here south coast getting a little much for me

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2018 16:32

32C here. I finished my outdoor work feeling slightly sick by the end. I hadn't noticed quite how hot it had got.

Fountainofchub · 03/08/2018 16:48

33 in London. Not looking forward to the nursery run! DS will be fine - his nursery has AC!

MrsMozart · 03/08/2018 16:55

Humid here and feel bleugh.

Am fine in high dry heat, but humidity does for me.

Forecast is, other than this weekend, looking hopeful for the return of some sanity.

StrumpersPlunkett · 03/08/2018 22:00

Been decorating sons bedroom all week. Literally pouring in sweat.

brizzledrizzle · 03/08/2018 22:53
