Any indication for the 12 August yet or is it too early? Supposed to be going out for a day trip but don't fancy it if it's going to be sweltering.

InMySpareTime · 31/07/2018 18:36

Anyone wanting a cooler break, it's high teens in the Northern Lakes this week, I had to wear a hoodie!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/07/2018 20:52

I'd say it's a bit early potatoes. It looks cooler at present, but I don't trust it to stay that way.

megletthesecond · 31/07/2018 22:30

I've done 51° in Death Valley. Opening the door to go out was like opening an oven door. I liked it.

The rain and cooler temps have pepped my garden and allotment up.

GloriaSmud · 01/08/2018 07:41

Blackberries have been brought along early as a result of the good weather ~ usually it's well into August before they're ready. Had my first picking session last night!

Bloodylovepotatoes · 01/08/2018 14:58

Warm in London today, though not quite as bad as it has been.

Frouby · 01/08/2018 20:33

Just watched the heatwave and hailstones programme on ITV. They are saying it will be hot and dry right through august.

It's getting a bit concerning now isn't it? Really worried about our ponies. There have been 2 quite serious grass fires at the side of our stables in the last 2 weeks. Started deliberately as well, probably kids messing about.

And then there is going to be a hay/straw shortage over winter too.

Am past enjoying it now if I am honest. Despite being quite outdoorsy. The rain we had over the weekend had all soaked away at least a fork deep by tuesday when I lifted some potatoes.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/08/2018 20:58

I didn't know that was on frouby, I'll have to try and catch up with it.

You must be worried. Can you put any CCTV on the side of the stables?
I think it is looking fairly serious. The rain helped a little to green things, but I've also been shocked at how dry the soil is already again.

Farmers held an emergency drought meeting today.

I'm heading out tomorrow to see if I can find some blackberries too :)

GloriaSmud · 01/08/2018 22:16

According to netweather, it's worth looking out for Mars tonight as it's very close to Earth.

This says blackberries are 2 months early. I'm off to do some more picking tomorrow ~ think there's going to be some excellent wine crumbles this year!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/08/2018 22:20

And liqueur. If it all goes tits up in March, we are bartering in alcoholic concoctions.

GloriaSmud · 01/08/2018 22:30

I tried Blackberry Whisky a few years ago.
It was......potent!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/08/2018 22:45

I am so making that!

GloriaSmud · 01/08/2018 23:01

I think I've got some left in the garage. It's a few years old now ~ I'm not sure I want to risk seeing what it's like after all this time!

colouringinagain · 01/08/2018 23:09

Oybbk do you think this year's heatwave and global forest fires will really wake people up to climate change?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/08/2018 08:01

Now there's a question. I personally think it's becoming harder to deny. However, there are some people who choose to believe the earth is flat, so who knows!

Frouby · 02/08/2018 08:29

oybbk we are lucky that we have a neighbour who works from home and he has trained his cctv onto the yard. The problem we have is that there is about 100 acres of old land refill at the side of us that has been turned into grassland with a methane outlet and station at the bottom of the hill. So anyone can access the 100 or so acres, be pretty hidden from sight and do what they want.

The houses that back onto our land are pretty good and we have told them and shown them where to move the ponies to in an emergency and they obviously have our numbers to call us.

But it's still a worry. 2 weeks ago it took the fire service about 4 hours to put it out. There were 4 fire engines and they shut roads and all sorts.

And then the impact of the weather on agriculture is a big worry. Hay and straw will go up massively for the winter.

Am hoping and praying that September is wetter but still not cold so we get some grass coming through. Hay was already a bit short coming out of winter.

And then there is the impact on human food production. Even on a tiny scale I have noticed a difference on our allotment. Runner beans have gone beany as soon as they form, pea moth in my peas, potatoes small, french beans took 3 sowings to get going and they don't seem to be producing as much. And that's with us watering every other day.

We are lucky that we can afford to pay extra for stuff but many families are already struggling. And not convinced that Gove is the best person to be in charge of another crisis situation.

But on the plus side the kids are enjoying the ponies in the nice weather.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/08/2018 08:30

You'll find me under the table. Blackberry whiskey. Nuff said.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/08/2018 08:33

I completely understand your fears Frouby.

Our local veg box scheme is having to import veg from the States. How they are keeping their costs down I don't know. So we are getting some weird combos from them. The problem is that much of Europe is in a similar boat to us too.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/08/2018 08:35

The ponies must need so much more water as well Frouby.

Frouby · 02/08/2018 08:48

They definitely need more water.

They are looking quite clean as well as we keep giving them baths to keep them cool. Which is a bonus when you have white greys and a cream grey.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/08/2018 09:00

I bet they've never been so clean! 😂

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/08/2018 09:04

Both my younger DC are going to the same farm on the same day but with different organisations on Monday, it's got me thinking, how do farms and zoos cope with this weather? Those poor animals!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/08/2018 09:06

There might be a bit of a cooler and showery interlude during the week of the 13th.mWatch this space.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/08/2018 09:08

It's not often I look forward to rain on my birthday!

bookbook · 02/08/2018 09:29

Rain please !
I'm with Frouby here - big impact on what is/isn't growing well on my allotment . My runner beans have barely set at all- first time ever, due I think to too much heat overnight, when they get pollinated .
There was a carrot farmer here in Yorkshire who may well go bust, as his crop is just too poor.
