Today's thunderstorm potential

Plenty of potential for some rather juicy thunderstorms today. As always, just because they are forecast, it doesn't mean that everyone in an area will get one - its quite possible for one town to be hit badly and the other stay dry.

So we have a low pressure interacting with a trough, to destabilise the atmosphere. High values of CAPE (convective available potential energy) However, the risk is still fairly marginal at present.

I think the strongest risk is to the west of the IOW this afternoon, evening, then developing further north in the west as we go through the night, where storms could become severe. Potential for large hail, frequent lightning and flash flooding. A low potential at present for funnel clouds.

It was incredible here. I admit to being terrified and went to bed with my flip flops on. In case anyone is thinking WTF? .... I have a metal bed frame - my theory being the rubber would 'earth' me if I got struck by lightning!

Grin

Didn't sleep a wink for the duration - the thunder was constant and loud the lightning like nothing I've ever seen, and the rain was torrential.

I kept peeking out through the blinds and it was like the end of the world. I'm not young, but I don't ever remember a storm that loud, that bright and that intense.

Nature at its most terrifying.

All we have had is 1 tiny rumble of thunder - just not fair

MonaTheMoaner · 19/07/2017 16:37

It's so murky and grey here (South Wales) with a little breeze. I'm hoping for thunder and a downpour tonight ⛈

Ohb0llocks · 19/07/2017 18:20

Nowt here yet in east lancs. it's gone stupidly warm and quite grey though.

Ds is now excited because the BBC shows thunder late morning at school. It certainly still feels muggy here and there are some ominous clouds around. I've tried to warn him that what the forecast says and what actually happens are two different things but he's six and doesn't care for that answer. As far as he's concerned if there's a âš¡ symbol on the website it must be true.

Am I going to have a happy or disappointed boy later?

Can anyone give me an outlook for Lands End next week? Walking the SW coast path and camping. I'd quite like a thunderstorm for the photo potential but would also like dry, but of a breeze and not toooooo hot!

PortiaCastis · 20/07/2017 13:10

I live a few miles from Lands End and very near the path, so far the forecast is showery next week
We are still recovering from Tuesdays storm but yes if we get a storm its quite impressive out at sea. I'll keep you posted if any more info is availiable.Smile

LadyFlumpalot · 20/07/2017 13:16

Oh awesome, thank you PortiaCastis!

PortiaCastis · 20/07/2017 13:35

No probs Smile

I'm very excited. At the risk of sounding twee, Sennen is my "happy place" closely followed by Botallack. Smile
