Today's thunderstorm potential

Plenty of potential for some rather juicy thunderstorms today. As always, just because they are forecast, it doesn't mean that everyone in an area will get one - its quite possible for one town to be hit badly and the other stay dry.

So we have a low pressure interacting with a trough, to destabilise the atmosphere. High values of CAPE (convective available potential energy) However, the risk is still fairly marginal at present.

I think the strongest risk is to the west of the IOW this afternoon, evening, then developing further north in the west as we go through the night, where storms could become severe. Potential for large hail, frequent lightning and flash flooding. A low potential at present for funnel clouds.

We have the storm in N Bucks now - long rumbles of thunder, flashes c/o lightning radar (cos I like watching when it's on the distant horizon and not right outside my window!). V muggy, still too after being blowy during the day.

ItsNachoCheese · 18/07/2017 22:13

I want a good thunderstom here (very middle of central scotland) its well needed

PointlessUsername · 18/07/2017 22:14

tissuesosoft

I am in NW London too had a few minutes of light rain and no thunder. Envy

tissuesosoft · 18/07/2017 22:15

pointless So strange! Maybe it's heading your way now?

PortiaCastis · 18/07/2017 22:16

Emergency centre has been opened

Im about 12miles from Coverack but we didnt have so much rain just localised floodings which aren't much in comparison.

tissuesosoft · 18/07/2017 22:16

It's absolutely tipping it down here!

andbabymakesthree · 18/07/2017 22:18

Any more like it here in Cornwall? The black cloud just hung over us today with rain and thunder persistent!

andbabymakesthree · 18/07/2017 22:19

*likely

ScrambledSmegs · 18/07/2017 22:21

I've discovered that if you zoom into your area on the lightning map, it tells you when the thunder sound wave from nearby lightning will hit your location. It's cool, almost like being psychic Grin

Monkeyinshoes · 18/07/2017 22:21

Starting to rain here, can see flashes in the clouds and just heard thunder.

MargoChanning · 18/07/2017 22:22

We are now getting rain and gentle rumblings of thunder in central London.

ScrambledSmegs · 18/07/2017 22:23

The storm's moved away now though so my powers were short-lived.

MargoChanning · 18/07/2017 22:27

Ooh big rumbling of thunder now here in zone 1!

PointlessUsername · 18/07/2017 22:28

Yes tissuesosoft, you were correct it is pouring now.

Candide · 18/07/2017 22:29

Oooh I love a weather thread but we ain't got none here except for humid sweatiness. Bring it on pls, but without flooding if poss.

Hope all people in Coverack are ok. Flowers

elephantoverthehill · 18/07/2017 22:29

A few flashes on the horizon.

PseudoBadger · 18/07/2017 22:31

North London/Herts now

MintToBee · 18/07/2017 22:34

Beautiful day in South Ayrshire, 77f. Glasgow Fair + Sun + Drunks have made for a really horrible shift at work.
Thunderstorms on the way tomorrow apparently.

HappyAxolotl · 18/07/2017 22:37

A few loud rumbles going on now in East London! I haven't seen any lightning yet though.

workshyfop · 18/07/2017 22:39

A few lightning flashes and rumbles of thunder here on the Herts/Cambs border but still a fair way off.

alcibiades · 18/07/2017 22:40

Lots more going on in the Channel, so possibility of more coming onshore to the south coast.

nigelsbigface · 18/07/2017 22:41

Thunder and rain now in east Herts...

Rinceoir · 18/07/2017 22:43

NW London spectacular sheet and forked lightning. Sky eerily bright and orange tinged.

alcibiades · 18/07/2017 22:44

Flowers for you, MintToBee. Weather can send some people a bit doolally - it certainly affects me - but add alcohol into the mix and it's the people who have to deal with that who have my sympathy.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/07/2017 22:45

HUGE storm now in the Midlands, torrential rain and now really loud thunder and lightening like I haven't seen in years. It's fab !
