Today's thunderstorm potential

Plenty of potential for some rather juicy thunderstorms today. As always, just because they are forecast, it doesn't mean that everyone in an area will get one - its quite possible for one town to be hit badly and the other stay dry.

So we have a low pressure interacting with a trough, to destabilise the atmosphere. High values of CAPE (convective available potential energy) However, the risk is still fairly marginal at present.

I think the strongest risk is to the west of the IOW this afternoon, evening, then developing further north in the west as we go through the night, where storms could become severe. Potential for large hail, frequent lightning and flash flooding. A low potential at present for funnel clouds.

Rain has started and distant rumbles now. I thought something had gone wrong with the map!

KittyConCarne · 18/07/2017 23:26

We're Portsmouth way (across the ferry, but not the posh one Grin), and it's been constant lightning for the past half hour over the Isle of Wight way.
Temperature's definetely dropped as the rain started 10 minutes ago.

poshme · 18/07/2017 23:27

I can on to see if anyone else was tracking the storm as my lightning map isn't working any more. Sad
But I see it's not just me.

Maybe we've all craved their server?or it's been hit by lightning!

Dorset- recently started raining again. Been watching the distant lightning in channel.

LadyFlumpalot · 18/07/2017 23:34

Excellent webcam here from Bournemouth.

HellonHeels · 18/07/2017 23:37

I'm in West London, a few flashes of lightning at 11pm and sprinkle of rain. Humidity is bad, hope it breaks soon.

LadyFlumpalot · 18/07/2017 23:37

According to the met office projected rain track, I've got a ark red area over me at about 1am....

EXCITEMENT!

Now, can I be arsed to dig out my camera and go out to where I can see a bit more? That is the important question!

BlackeyedSusan · 18/07/2017 23:37

not just me then.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/07/2017 23:38

Storm between about 7.30 and 8.30pm here (East Hants) - never overhead but a wave of heavy raindrops and flashes/rumbles came from the Winchester direction. Still very muggy.

PlymouthMaid1 · 18/07/2017 23:41

The storm is back here.

SleepFreeZone · 18/07/2017 23:42

Huge storm here in Cambridgeshire

123rd · 18/07/2017 23:44

Oh, I hope it's coming towards the east coast... nothing yet Sad

LadyFlumpalot · 18/07/2017 23:45

Heh heh. I'm about 30 miles from Bournemouth and if I half look at the web cam and half look out the window I can see faint flashes a heartbeat after the strikes on the webcam. Isn't nature just awesome?!?

Springlambs · 19/07/2017 00:21

Damediazepam I'm in the Midlands too and have had nothing! Although can hear the wind getting up now

whojamaflip · 19/07/2017 00:25

Well apart from a few flashes in the distance we've had nothing here thank god

Beautiful starry night out there now with a very soft breeze HmmSmile

Hopefully it's passed us by this time!

Fontella · 19/07/2017 00:29

Lots of thunder and lightning but it's a way off. Just light rain here.

ofudginghell · 19/07/2017 00:37

WowConfusedjust had over an hour of solid heavy rain and directly over your head thunder with constant lightening.
We've lost electricity twice but currently back on. The rains just starting to slow a bit and the lightening starting to ease a little.
My gosh what a storm. Stood out in the front garden watching for a while.
Wish I had roof lights.
Down in the south west here

ofudginghell · 19/07/2017 00:41

My mistake. Thought it was settling down and starting to ease off.
My house feels like Blackpool illuminations and my dogs absolutely freaking out so I'd say it's still going strong.
Back again for more Confused
