Today's thunderstorm potential

Plenty of potential for some rather juicy thunderstorms today. As always, just because they are forecast, it doesn't mean that everyone in an area will get one - its quite possible for one town to be hit badly and the other stay dry.

So we have a low pressure interacting with a trough, to destabilise the atmosphere. High values of CAPE (convective available potential energy) However, the risk is still fairly marginal at present.

I think the strongest risk is to the west of the IOW this afternoon, evening, then developing further north in the west as we go through the night, where storms could become severe. Potential for large hail, frequent lightning and flash flooding. A low potential at present for funnel clouds.

You, across in Worthing too. Just checked the Met office lightning map and it crashed! Too much lightning to handle Grin

KittyConCarne · 19/07/2017 01:25

Mooey89 and IGot, watching it with you in Pompey.
Lightning is constant, and that rain is torrential!

youarenotkiddingme · 19/07/2017 01:34

Yep it's amazing here! Just outside of Pompey! The rain was just crashing down and about an inch deep on roads. Hope everyone is safe and sound

OrlandaFuriosa · 19/07/2017 01:49

SE London, magnificent flashes, sheet as well, about four miles away. No rain, no howling dog.. ( is it too scared?).

GavelRavel · 19/07/2017 01:52

absolutely bonkers in Surrey now, whole house awake watching, as it's so loud and light.

glitterglitters · 19/07/2017 01:58

Pompey was good. There's car alarms going off lol

ChallyCreaks · 19/07/2017 02:03

It's raining now in sw london. A bit of lightning and thunder in the distance. Lightning maps shows it's about to go bonkers and the website keeps crashing with all the lightning strikes in the south.

boobyooby · 19/07/2017 02:19

South east now alive with non stop thunder, lightening flashes every now and again and the rain has just arrived

summerfruitsquash · 19/07/2017 02:25

Just woken up by distant rumbling and faint flashes (left the curtains partially open for this reason Wink). Looked at the lightning map - holy moly that's a very big storm heading this way! Im just outside of Chelmsford, the storm isn't even past Southend yet and it's already very noisy.

And my house is currently surrounded by scaffolding....

This lightning map site is still up (so far!) ⚡️⚡️⛈⚡️⚡️

alcibiades · 19/07/2017 03:01

Bloody hell. I went off asleep and got woken up by huge crashes of thunder. All that stuff lurking out in the Channel obviously came ashore with a vengeance.

Can't remember such storms, and I go back a long way.

summerfruitsquash · 19/07/2017 03:21

All kicked off here now. I've done a mad dash round to close all of the windows out of fear of a bolt hitting the scaffolding. Also had to put the bucket under the hole in the roof because I genuinely didn't believe the storm would be this bad. I think our power has been knocked out as Wi-Fi is down. But that doesn't mean much when you're out in the sticks because it barely works as it is.

nigelsbigface · 19/07/2017 03:42

Huge thunder and lightening just moving away now in Herts.loudest thunder I've ever heard!

123rd · 19/07/2017 04:20

WOW!!!! This is amazing. Been going for ages Smile

WinnieTheWitch50 · 19/07/2017 05:02

No hope of sleep here, I'm watching the lightening from the lounge window with a cuppa Smile

cakebaby · 19/07/2017 05:30

Think we're just getting it now. Big blobs of rain and lots of grumbling in the distance!
In Gloucestershire

ladybird69 · 19/07/2017 06:01

Grumbling? I mean rumbling. Have to excuse me I've been awake all night waiting for it to get here!!!

oldsilver · 19/07/2017 06:32

Think it's the one we've had in Briz you are getting, which has been decently rumbly/flashy all night Grin

I went through and stopped each individual ad on ad tracker that made lightning tracker work - turning them all off didn't work. After about 5 ads it started working...for a while, then had to do it again.

summerfruitsquash · 19/07/2017 07:47

Just overheard on BBC news that there were 100,000 lightning strikes overnight.

Can't believe that huge one is still going, seems to have just cleared the Norfolk/Suffolk coast. Wow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2017 08:00

whojam Im glad it all missed you :) Fingers crossed for today too.
sounds like a lot of excitement for some!

Once again there's potential for severe thunderstorms today once I'm out of bed I'll investigate the level of risk

I can't believe but all three DC slept through that last night. Our new windows are effective then!

LadyFlumpalot · 19/07/2017 08:15

After all of my excitement I pretty much slept through it GrinAngrySad

DD woke me up to ask me if it was Zog in the sky, I couldn't be arsed to find my contact lenses and force them into tired eyes so went back to bed. I was in that not quite awake get to the kids zone.
