...Anyone else's heart sink at heatwaves?!

Agh! Just looked at the weather app and next week looks like hell! On Tuesday, when we have a big event and I'll be running everywhere and driving for hours, it'll be over 30 Confused

Every bloody heatwave I get sick, moody, and then also don't sleep for weeks. Every time! No idea why. I dread them

... Are there any fellow heat-haters about on Mumsnet who fancy a whine? may well just be me

I like bundly wool in winter - and I wear wool suits or dresses to work Grin

I shall continue my search for smart, cool, summer wear!

Looking out the window and dreading the commute home!

mogloveseggs · 18/07/2016 16:36

Just wandered round tesco for half an hour after picking the dc up taking advantage of the air con. We're all snappy and hot though. Hoping salad for tea and strawberries and ice cream will soothe tempers (mine included). Doesn't help that ice got a water infection, feeling doubly yuck.

mogloveseggs · 18/07/2016 16:37

*I've

OhSoggyBiscuit · 18/07/2016 16:43

Was outside most of today- got home and had to sit in front of the fan for half an hour before finally dragging myself upstairs for a nice cold shower.

I hate 30 degree weather.

Foolscapped · 18/07/2016 16:50

I loathe it. You won't find me complaining about chills and drizzle, which feel much more natural to me. In fact, I am heading to Scotland today, and will be very disappointed if it's not a lot cooler there. I'm packing jeans and a raincoat, so there! Grin

I cannot think in this heat, and never adjusted, even when I lived in a country where it was regularly over 45 degrees in summer, and had an entire wardrobe of loose, cool cottons and linens, a routine that involved a siesta, and ferocious aircon. I'm just not suited to it physically or mentally, and I confess to getting cross with the people who bang on endlessly about how I should be outside in a bikini 'making the most of it'.

BeMorePanda · 18/07/2016 16:57

I saw this is Rome in a heatwave in 1994 & have used it many times since:

Fill nice clean spray bottle with water and as you walk along, spray the air just in front of your legs. It will land on your skin and cool you down really well as you are on the move. it does need contact with actual skin to work though, as well as movement or a breeze.

I have a fan at work and also use this method on face in front of fan. Very cooling.

We live in a flat - no garden.

After work tonight I will sit in the park in a breeze, in the shade, drink a G&T while the DC run amok until bed time.

Roussette · 18/07/2016 17:04

I don't get the hate for a couple of days of hot weather. It is so so rare. Tonight I shall be eating salad in the garden with a chilled glass of white wine. This happens so rarely. Just embrace it you people!

I could understand if it was like the summer of 1976 (I'm old, I remember it), it was over 30 degrees for 16 days in a row, then it hit 32.2 for 15 days. Companies started early and closed early to make the most of it, it was fantastic! We'll be lucky if we get 2 days of this heat this summer, so my sympathy is a bit lacking as anyone can cope with a couple of days of this.

If you hate it that much, you can always sit indoors with a cheap fan pointing at you, my bedroom gets hot, I picked one up in the spring for a tenner and it does the job.

We have to put up with low cloud and drizzle week after week, which just makes me depressed, just enjoy a few days good weather, change your routines a bit, shake it all up and enjoy!

PurpleClintAngels · 18/07/2016 17:06

It's not just 2 days though...

This started yesterday and is due to run until Thursday.

I'm neither a particular lover or hater of hot weather, I'm fat and get sweaty and feel self conscious but can appreciate if you're pregnant or ill this is truly vile.

The cold water on the wrists (pulse points) is quite an effective cooler. Am off the raid the freezer for ice cubes!

Roussette · 18/07/2016 17:09

4 days then! I am desperate for it to last till the weekend as we have a 3 days thing going on to raise money and profits will soar I know if it doesn't piss down with rain.

Titsalinabumsquash · 18/07/2016 17:09

Hate it! Hate it! Hate it!

I'm another one covered in hives and dizzy, sick and miserable. I get sun stroke if I even dare pop a toe into the hot garden. The baby just wants to feed which is making me dehydrated and OMG FLIES! I hate flies, they are put on earth to be filthy and piss people off.
Then I have to worry about the kids, are they wearing hats? Gave they got a drink? Where's the sun cream? Etc etc etc. Blah blah blah.

I don't give a shiny shit what the sun worshippers think, bring on Autumn and winter then you can all be miserable about people daring to enjoy Christmas while we all tell you to get over it.

It's so much easier to get warm when you're cold but it's much harder to get cool when you're hot. I'm also on a low carb diet so I can't even eat ice cream and drink cold wine. AngryAngryAngryAngry

Roussette · 18/07/2016 17:12

I won't be miserable at Autumn or Winter. I just like to embrace the seasons. I think it's harder to heat up if you are cold than the other way round. Open all windows and door for a through breeze, put on a fan, close blinds to keep the hot sun out - sorted!

(not that I do that, I go out in it and make the most of the Vitamin D that my body so badly needs after piss poor weather!)

maggienolia · 18/07/2016 17:13

I have to go to work tonight in tunic and trousers. Our company handed out summer tunics, but they were scratchy and so tightly cut that I looked like one of Benny Hill's naughty nurses.Blush.
My final call is at a house where the couple have the heating on - it gets to about 37c.
I will be writing my notes in their garden.

Delatron · 18/07/2016 17:17

Yesterday was not a heatwave, just a nice summers day. I didn't struggle to sleep either. Today and Tuesday will be pretty hot. It is forecast to break down on Wednesday at some point. You are really splitting hairs over a day when it has been shit weather for months?

Wholeheartedly agree with Rousette if it was 1976 you'd have something to moan about. It's a real shame it will break down by the weekend.

In the meantime, wrists under cold water, nothing too strenuous if you can and cold showers. I can't wait to eat outdoors for the first time all year. Lovely.

Delatron · 18/07/2016 17:18

Love Christmas! Love the snow and proper seasons. Just like to get outdoors in the nice weather in summer too, you know for a bit of a change to the incessant drizzle?

Blerg · 18/07/2016 17:25

I hate it too. I genuinely don't get how people enjoy hot weather. Sunbathing seems to be a act of insanity to me. I have a thyroid problem and am crap at regulating my temp so maybe that's it. It is just to be endured.

My DD (3) told me she loves the sun today so we've been out. Also the feeling of sun lotion, bleurgh. And that's just putting it on her.

At least I'm not pregnant and commuting this year! I am clutching a small human furnace to my body much of the time though - BFing DS.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 18/07/2016 17:31

I hate hot weather and I have SAD. Spring and autumn are best for me (although I love Christmas so I can cope with winter too. It's just summer that can fuck off Grin )

SunLoather · 18/07/2016 17:33

You're totally on demented, it's my dream to live in Scotland. (I should warn you though, my husband might stay here, apparently he rather enjoys having a job etc - you wouldn't mind sharing right?) (and seriously, glad you've had a lovely day out) Smile

Please don't let's quarrel everyone - it's not like any of us can control the weather, so it's really not worth debating is it? Live and let live and all.

Sun-lovers, enjoy!

Sufferers, unite! - we'll make it through this and all the other heatwaves coming up - and I for one am reassured that it's not just me Smile

Right, off to battle the elements, and if I do see a Boots I'll try to get one of those little spray bottles, thanks for the tip.

HATE this weather for anything other than bein on holiday in. Humid, sweaty, headachy, itchy, restless...fed up!

Irritable and waiting for Thursday. Give me a pleasant 19/20 degrees day anytime. Harrumph.

Roussette · 18/07/2016 17:37

No quarrel on my part, if you come out in hives, it must be awful.

Good luck you hot day haters, vive la difference!

Just off outside in a minute to sit outside with my homemade salmon quiche, rice salad, new potatoes and a glass of chilled white! hoping I can stick with one glass, it's only Monday after all!

Lorelei76 · 18/07/2016 17:55

you know it's weird...I used to like hot weather. Now I find it harder but there's no air con in the office and I live in a boiling hot flat (with the advantage of low heating bills).

I think part of it is that it's so often humid in London. I was in Vegas earlier in the year and the temp was about what it is now today. It was really nice and we wandered around everywhere because it's dry heat. But London always seems to have a higher level of humidity.

Also having to commute - blech.

Badders123 · 18/07/2016 18:03

Ugh
On hols atm in North Yorkshire
EXCEPT ITS AS HOT AS THE SURFACE OF THE SUN
I can't bear it - 28 degrees this afternoon

dementedma · 18/07/2016 18:14

Hmm sunloather you make a tempting offer. Decent weather and a chap thrown in? Where did you say you lived again???Grin

middlings · 18/07/2016 18:18

Am now on train home Sad

Is horrible!!!

NicknameUsed · 18/07/2016 18:42

It's a nice warm 24 degrees at home. That is my perfect temperature. It is 35 degrees here.

bitachon · 18/07/2016 18:56

The worst for me is not being able to sleep because I need cool fresh air at night. I am so looking forward to the end of this week when it gets cooler again.
