...Anyone else's heart sink at heatwaves?!

Agh! Just looked at the weather app and next week looks like hell! On Tuesday, when we have a big event and I'll be running everywhere and driving for hours, it'll be over 30 Confused

Every bloody heatwave I get sick, moody, and then also don't sleep for weeks. Every time! No idea why. I dread them

... Are there any fellow heat-haters about on Mumsnet who fancy a whine? may well just be me

What clothes are you all wearing? The difference in how you feel the heat if you are wearing tight clothes instead of loose clothes is very marked. We saw some pretty uncomfortable looking people in leggings and skinny jeans over the last couple of days. In humid 34 degree heat even I would struggle in those clothes. I don't wear makeup in this weather either. The newer sunscreens are very light and don't clog your skin.

DD bought a water spray with a fan attached and it is brilliant for walking around in this heat.

Germgirl · 18/07/2016 13:28

I've lost 8 stone since last summer, one of the downsides of that is I'm freezing all the time. (Something to do with big blood vessels and loss of heat), I was looking forward to the hot weather in a way I never had before, I've always hated it.
It's been warm & muggy for a while now and I hate it :(
It appears I now have two modes, freezing cold or hot & sweaty. Not helped by the fact that I've just started hormone treatment which will give me an early menopause. I'm not looking forward to the hot flushes.
It's the type of heat that awful though isn't it? Muggy, sweaty heat. We've booked to go Vegas in August where the temp will be over 100 all the time, but I think I'll be ok. (Bloody hope so!) they have good AC there and it's very dry.
So Op, YANBU, it's horrible at the moment.

SunLoather · 18/07/2016 13:28

Sorry, I've just realised I've done the thing I've been trying not to, and given into a heat-induced-bad-temper. Apologies all. I will try not to post again when feeling cross.

(But can I just say, this is partly why I hate sun! It turns me into the devil!)

Feel for you sunloather. Sorry you are feeling rotten. Maybe you and I should do a house swap lo?

whirlwinds · 18/07/2016 13:32

I've been loving the rain and cool air for weeks now, so to get this heat sneaking in from nowhere was a let down, we have fan on now from the moment we get up to keep it cool.

Artandco · 18/07/2016 13:32

Cosmic - it's warmed up now in London. But it lunch time, hottest part of the day. At the point everyone was melting it was morning as still cooler.
Still not paddling pool weather though

middlings · 18/07/2016 13:32

NicknameUsed I was out in London yesterday so was relatively smartly dressed - and in not entirely natural fibres. Got home late afternoon and was in a cotton skirt and t-shirt in seconds. SOOOOO much more comfortable.

Trouble is, investing in very lovely, very pricey linen seems a bit silly given the fact that we get this for two weeks once every three years!

(the last time we had weather like this I was 30 weeks pregnant. That was NOT fun)

hollinhurst84 · 18/07/2016 13:34

This is why I moan and get pissed off when people go how can you not like it, it's lovely! I'm covered from head to toe in these hives

...Anyone else's heart sink at heatwaves?!
NicknameUsed · 18/07/2016 13:44

It doesn't have to be linen though. I wear a lot of cotton.

Ah well. We will just have to agree to disagree about weather. My workplace has fierce air-conditioning. My car has air-conditioning and I live on the edge of the Pennines, so hot weather isn't usually an issue for me.

My main concern is being able to drive up my road in the snow.

middlings · 18/07/2016 13:46

hollinhurst that's horrible. That used to happen to me when I was little and we have to be REALLY careful with DD1. Lots of time indoors when it's like this and certainly not out in the sun for most of the day.

I know it doesn't have to be linen - and it's cotton at home. The trouble is trying to look smart for work in this weather - doesn't come easily...

georgiatraher · 18/07/2016 14:08

LOVE.
One winter when I was in a new house, with no heating for 3 weeks I swore that I would never complain about the heat again and would just soak it into my skin.
I'm fair and burn so easily. I'm also sweaty and gross. But we live MOST of the time in freezing cold weather. F that S. Summer is heaven.
(I grew up in a hot country. Maybe I got used to having a normal life in the heat where as the UK is used to only experiencing heat once or twice a year and when on holiday, when there's nothing to do)

NicknameUsed · 18/07/2016 14:20

I guess it is because I don't live or work in London. I drive to work in a car with air con then work in an office where the air con is too cold so I have to wear a cardigan when it is 20+ degrees outside (sob).

I probably find heat more bearable because I have access to some good coping strategies, and live somewhere where is never gets very hot.

Bloodybridget · 18/07/2016 14:21

I don't like being overheated; I try not to complain about hot weather because it's pretty rare, etc. - but as I'm retired, it's much easier for me. Today, for example, I'm spending plenty of time under shade in the garden. For people who have to rush around, use public transport at peak times, it's horrible. Sympathy to all of you who are struggling.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 18/07/2016 14:27

YY Sunloather. Yesterday was lovely - about 19C, lovely breeze, fresh and bright. Had a lovely day visiting a vehicle rally with one of the kids and taking in a few pokestops on the way there and back.

Today is horrid. I'm making the most of it by blitzing the laundry mountain (cautiously because there's a fucking great raincloud on the way, so I'm monitoring my rainfall app) but I've had to come in from the back yard and have a piece of toast and a big drink, after being out there just a couple of minutes because I was feeling quite whoozy.

The people coming into the thread and complaining that we're stopping them from enjoying the weather sound like they're rather hard work. It's the same mentality that decrees that poor people are just trying to make people who aren't poor feel guilty or that someone eating a salad for lunch is automatically judging someone else for being fat, simply by virtue of eating the salad or that SAHM automatically judge WOHM. It speaks of insecurity and a need to control others in order to feel better, rather than to simply work on being less insecure.

georgiatraher · 18/07/2016 14:28

The heat on public transport is criminal.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 18/07/2016 14:37

I'm wearing light chinos - legs covered to protect them but as cool as possible and a mid blue light cotton White stuff t-shirt - sized up for bagginess. No hot tight leggings for me. I worked that sort of shit out about 3 or 4 decades ago, NicknameUsed I tend to wear thin clothing with sleeves unless it's over 20C, or else I end up scratching all evening where the sun has touched me. If I'm lucky, I find a sunblock that doesn't bring me out in a different rash. I'd I'm really lucky, it goes a year or so without being re-formulated.

NicknameUsed · 18/07/2016 14:39

Aren't you doing the same Stick? As soon as the cold haters complain the heat haters come on and say the same things as us cold haters.

Just putting on another jumper doesn't work if you really feel bone chillingly cold.

NicknameUsed · 18/07/2016 14:40

Although anyone having to use public transport in towns and cities does have my sympathy.

middlings · 18/07/2016 14:41

Agreed Georgia, it's revolting. I'm dreading the commute home. And I have to leave more time to get to the station than normal as i just can't move at my usual pace in this weather.

Stick your outfit is exactly what I wear out of the office, and the DDs (aged 2 & 4) are dressed similarly today but sadly, that doesn't cut the mustard for work. Cheap linen or cotton work clothes are badly cut and look terrible, expensive ones aren't worth the money as I'd wear them so seldom. It's a pain in the neck.

Delatron · 18/07/2016 14:45

I don't complain in the winter ever! I didn't even complain throughout the shit May and the cold rainy June. Just wished for a couple of days of respite and warmth on my skin. Yet the minute it warms up for two days you guys moan so much! Completely hypocritical. I know who sounds like hard work! It's just a few days.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 18/07/2016 14:53

Nickname I am not going into threads and telling heat lovers that they need to stop going on about how they love the heat because I don't.

This is a thread for people whose hearts sink at heatwaves. If you don't like the idea of that, it's easy to avoid reading about it.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 18/07/2016 14:57

I find linen to be quite good all year round, funnily enough.

And I do sometimes have a moan in winter - I suspect I'm not a million miles away from Nickname and we have the same problems with whether we can get in and out of the village at times. We've had winters where whole streets become completely inaccessible for weeks on end.

ditavonteesed · 18/07/2016 15:46

another one who can;t bear oit here, dh texted me at lunch time to check I hadn;t gone outside, if only that was possible. I work in a hospital and wear a thick tunic and long thick navy trousers and by the end of yesterday I was dreaming of a shower.

VilootShesCute · 18/07/2016 15:48

Urgh can't talk too hot...

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/07/2016 15:53

My weather app says its 25 degrees here but it isn't even very sunny. I just walked the 30 minute round trip to the shop and am dripping in sweat. Look like I've done an hour in the gym. I'm just not built for this weather Sad
