...Anyone else's heart sink at heatwaves?!

SunLoather · 16/07/2016 13:10

Agh! Just looked at the weather app and next week looks like hell! On Tuesday, when we have a big event and I'll be running everywhere and driving for hours, it'll be over 30 Confused

Every bloody heatwave I get sick, moody, and then also don't sleep for weeks. Every time! No idea why. I dread them

... Are there any fellow heat-haters about on Mumsnet who fancy a whine? may well just be me

OP posts:
NoPowerInTheVerseCanStopMe · 18/07/2016 19:08

I don't cope well with hot weather at the best of times but will normally tolerate a few days of it without complaining too much.

Right now I am 38 weeks pregnant, with a heavy cold that has turned into a sinus and ear infection. I am bloody miserable Sad

NeedACleverNN · 18/07/2016 19:13

It is 7.15pm and according to Siri it is still 28c

I am very hot and very uncomfortable

Leggytadpole · 18/07/2016 20:00

I only hate it because I've got to go to work tomorrow. I want to stay home and sit in the paddling pool drinking lemonade and eating lollies! Waaaaaahhh.

CombineBananaFister · 18/07/2016 20:02

This is a really miserable time for me. If I get sweaty it hurts my eczema and makes me sore and miserable. I take medication (immunos) which means I cant be out in the sun too long and have to be covered up/factor 50spf so get hotter still and feel very vunerable. Its difficult to do stuff with DS due to these restrictions so I feel so guilty Sad
Much prefer Autumn when its dry but milder and I dont have to shade hop or walk around stinging. Love the winter months as the cold is numbing and no-one can see my shitty skin skin/scars as its normal to be covered up Grin

SilverHawk · 18/07/2016 20:25

Delatron there is normally a reason why people don't like hot weather.
There are also very good reasons why heat over 30 degrees can be dangerous for many health conditions.
I find that over time I can acclimatise to heat but I certainly can't do it in a day! I think that a lot of people are like that.
However, the sun, as such is not my friend due to skin problems caused by it.
Enjoy the sun while you can Grin

BishopBrennansArse · 18/07/2016 20:31

God no.
I'm getting real relief from my RA pain, I feel vaguely human for the first time in months.
I'd welcome a prolonged hot spell.

SilverHawk · 18/07/2016 20:43

See, swings and roundabouts!
BTW DH has RA and he's still grumpy! Will ask when he's not so tired. I agree BBA it should help his joints.

BishopBrennansArse · 18/07/2016 21:09

Not looking forward to tomorrow night/Wed when we're due a storm - that makes my joints fizz!

SilverHawk · 18/07/2016 21:29

Oh goodness That's not good, we're due to go out for the first time in ages.
Grumpy fizzy joints sounds ummm. I might have sun stroke by then Grin

JulieJuniper · 18/07/2016 21:32

It's the humidity that's the problem. Dry-ish heat is much easier to deal with, but we rarely get that here. With high humidity, sweat doesn't evaporate, and breathing isn't easy when there's so much moisture in the air.

We're not very used to such humid weather, because it doesn't happen often enough for long enough for air-conditioning to be common in most houses and offices. Work dress codes don't really allow for loose-fitting clothing; and it's not very fashionable to wear broad-brimmed hats.

I do envy those who are enjoying this current "heatwave". I suspect they've got strategies that the rest of us could learn from.

e1y1 · 18/07/2016 21:41

Yep another one here, I actually have Hypothyroidism and I have never been able to tolerate the heat.

To be honest, I can just about cope indoors - albeit as a puddle in the middle of the floor.

However, outside - I feel sick, dizzy, headache and moody.

I was actually much, much worse before I started taking thyroxine meds.

And yes, it has been muggy for months!!

e1y1 · 18/07/2016 21:45

Delatron

Ah yes, the summer of 1976 -

Water shut of for 17 hours a day, with a demand of a 70 percent usage reduction on top. £500 million of crop damage, meaning soaring food prices. £60 million in insurance payouts due to houses suffering subsidence.

What is not to love.

Petal40 · 18/07/2016 21:46

Get a loose pair of socks.soak them in freezing cold water .run the cold tap a bit,Wring them out.and put them on...works a treat X

Delatron · 18/07/2016 21:56

Muggy for months? It's barely hit 20 degrees and has not stopped raining.

Seriously though, if the heat is having that much of an affect on you then yes you need to look at your coping strategies a bit more. Who's to say 76 wouldn't happen again and if you can't cope with a couple of days how on earth would you cope with a couple of months of this weather?

hollinhurst84 · 18/07/2016 21:59

But some people don't! I would have to go on steroids and some form of IV antihistamine
I manage ok, but the constant hives and itching are annoying. Already on 4 X one a day antihistamines. Actual diagnosis of allergic to heat so I'm happily grumpy when people say how I should be enjoying it. I can't

P1nkP0ppy · 18/07/2016 22:00

I used to be a sun lover, not any more.
I find sitting with your feet in a bowl of cold water and wearing very fetching a wet towel around the back of my neck certainly helped this afternoon. I also have a chillow at night plus a fan in the faint hope that I'll get some sleep.
For all of those who struggle in hot weather I hope it doesn't last too long (pretty likely in GB!)

Sara107 · 18/07/2016 22:16

The thing I hate about the hot weather here is that it doesn't cool down at night and you can't sleep. Where I come from, (Ireland, coast) a heat wave is never really terribly hot, and you don't seem to get the hot, humid nights that happen here.

hazeyjane · 18/07/2016 22:22

I would cope with another 76, I would be miserable from feeling dizzy and shit, but I would cope.

D s on the other hand, I don't know how he would cope, he was wrecked today when I picked him up, his asthma is worse and he is very clammy and floppy.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 18/07/2016 22:40

Seriously though, if the heat is having that much of an affect on you then yes you need to look at your coping strategies a bit more.

If this thread is having such an effect on you that you haven't buggered off to do something else yet, then right back at you Hmm

We have massive south-facing windows in the upstairs bedroom - it's still over 27 degrees in DSs bedroom now, he's just in a nappy. His nursery has no air con and it's a converted barn, so like a greenhouse Sad looking forward to Thursday when it drops back down to the low twenties. That's warm enough for me Grin

Delatron · 18/07/2016 22:55

Keep curtains closed in the day, get a fan?

What do you think people on the continent do? Not all of them have air con and they don't melt. Yes they are used to it but we could learn a thing or two from
them . They certainly don't spend all summer moaning, they get on with it. Thursday is two days away.,.

notamummy10 · 18/07/2016 23:13

I cannot wait until the thunderstorm and heavy showers happen... Hopefully it cools down!!

The weather has definitely messed with my appetite, I barely touched my Burger King tea- cost me nearly £7! I've been drinking tons though. I am dreading tomorrow... My inner thighs are so sore due to chafing, I've even got cuts on my left inner thigh.

NicknameUsed · 19/07/2016 04:21

E1y1 I assume you aren't in the UK then because it hasn't been hot and muggy for months, even in London.

Where I live we have had a handful of days where the thermometer has crept above 20 degrees.

What temperature do you consider too hot?

Sallystyle · 19/07/2016 05:34

It was awfully hot yesterday. I love summer but it was a bit too much for me. Was very hard to sleep last night.

I mostly worry about my ferrets though as they aren't good in heat and I don't really have a cooler room for them. They got lots of cool baths yesterday but can't do that when I'm at work very often so I'm starting to get a bit obsessed about them, especially as two are tiny babies.

Sallystyle · 19/07/2016 05:49

It has been very muggy in East Anglia. I am a heat and sun lover usually, but at work it has been pretty bad.

I was on the top floor working (hospital) the other day and it was awful, no air conditioning and the patients were all irritable and hot and the staff all had headaches and felt shitty.

hazeyjane · 19/07/2016 06:21

We have fans, close curtains, use cool cloths etc as I say I am prone to heat stroke, I am really sensible when it comes to hot weather - still makes me feel ctrappy, doesn't stop dd2s nosebleeds, dh getting hot and grouchy working outdoors or D s suffering with overheating, asthma and the rest!

I don't know Delatron, I guess if we lived on the continent we would be unhappy and feeling rotten for a larger chunk of the year. I have friends whose children have similar reactions to the heat, and they have to wear cooling vests and some have to part time school. They all have air con though. But there is a reason we don't go to hot countries!

I don't know why it winds you up so much that some of us who don't like the heat want to have a whingy thread (the clue that it is for heat haters is in the title!)

I genuinely feel sympathy for people who struggle with the cold, have SAD and feel gloomy all winter. I wouldn't dream of going on a thread where people were suffering those things and say, 'oh fgs just crack on and put a woolly on'
