Well, its that time of year where we start wondering about the winter to come. Will it be mild, wet, stormy or buckets of snow for all?

Of course it is impossible to tell, last years guesscast went quite well, but probably down to luck and vagueness of words Grin

There is much talk of El Nino - and it is a very strong one at present. NOAA give a 95% probability of El Nino persisting through this winter. El Nino afftects temperatures in the Pacific – warming parts of it. This can have a knock on effect for us, though not always as great as people seem to think. However it cannot be ignored. It seems to be associated with cold winters, but not exclusively, mild and wet winters have also occurred during El Nino.

The North Atlantic Oscillation can also have an affect. It is hard to forecast this more than a couple of weeks in advance – there seem to be a wide spread of solutions in two weeks. To predict it we need to look at the temperatures in the Atlantic. The north Atlantic is colder than usual but the tropical Atlantic is warmer than usual. Interesting. The met office seem to think this will lead to a positive NOA led winter – which tends to be mild.
As a result of their positive NOA prediction the met office are suggesting that it is more likely to be a warmer than average Oct-Dec than a colder than average winter. here Somewhat amusingly though they also suggest that the Oct-Dec period is more likely to be wetter than average. Well, half way through Oct and looking forward, this forecast doesn’t seem to be playing out. Their next issue will be in about 10 days time .
Another factor to look at is towards the east – any long lasting cold air tends to come from that direction. And we have an impressive start to the season. Russia has had widespread snowfall, in fact, some are saying that it is a record start. If it doesn’t thaw (it is very early in the season!) this is good news for cold weather.

So where are we at? Conflicting ideas – it could be a very cold winter, there are indications to support that but equally many factors contradict those signals. We will just have to wait and see.

Next update, end of half term :)

I love snow providing I don't have to go out in it.

SwedeDreams · 15/10/2015 01:03

Lovely! Kitten, seems a long time since the last weather thread of yours -makes me feel like winter is coming...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2015 07:42

just been doing a quick check longer term and a low pressure looks like it might affect us in half term. Nothing to worry about yet, but I'm keeping an eye on it.

Thank you OYBBK!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 15/10/2015 08:23

We've got the woodburners going now, it's all good.

GloriaSmud · 15/10/2015 10:11

Just going to add this website ~ I remembered it this morning and is a nice one for if/when the UK has snow.

Toraleistripe · 15/10/2015 11:02

I want a white xmas ! We are holidaying in a cottage at Xmas and it would be great if it snowed.

IKnowRight · 15/10/2015 11:09

I look on all those charts on the Metcheck website and scratch my head and look confused, lovely to have it all explained in actual English.

DH is convinced of a cold winter this year, he works in farming so is dreading it... me, I love a cold, clear crisp winter that I can observe from the comfort of either my front room or my office Grin

AlpacaLypse · 15/10/2015 11:11

I love your weather threads Kitten!

GingerIvy · 15/10/2015 17:24

Snow please OYBBK, but ds has requested that it not snow on the pavement or the car please, as he doesn't like that. I'll be mightily impressed if you can manage that. Grin

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 15/10/2015 17:27

Interesting! Thanks, you legend, you. Grin

DolphinsPlayground · 15/10/2015 17:54

Marking place., love snow thread!

AlpacaLypse · 15/10/2015 19:38

Like IKnowRight's husband, I work outside in the countryside. However I WANT cold, specifically so cold that the water freezes.

Last winter there were only three days that I didn't have to hosepipe mud and filth off the dogs when I brought them home from our dog walking rounds. The dogs hate it, (apart from the three households who have set up a warm water feed to the garden hose). And we hate it, because they shake icy cold water all over us.

MrsJorahMormont · 15/10/2015 22:24

We got snow last winter and I had near miss in the car!

So snow for one day only, preferably a Saturday when we have a full fridge. Then it can melt away overnight.

You can arrange that, can't you Kitten? Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2015 22:34

For those wanting some early snowy scenes ~ Longyearbyen (scroll down for a list of webcams) is looking rather white at the moment!

SideOrderofChips · 18/10/2015 09:39

Its definitely a cold start to the Autumn here in Jersey this year. Last year it was alot warmer but we've had to break out the winter tights for school already and coats!
I've even just put an order in for the hats/gloves/scarves etc.

Average day temperature is 12-14oC, night time is 9-11oC

digerd · 18/10/2015 16:43

This morning on BBC1, the weather forecast was " you can count yourself very, very unlucky if you have rain".

It has rained here in Sth Herts just recently Confused

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 19/10/2015 17:37

What's all this stuff in the news about "experts predicting a white Christmas" ? Confused And it's not even from the Daily Fail or the Express!

Igelei · 19/10/2015 17:40

Copies 'FOTTFSOF' for future use Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2015 21:07

experts can't predict whether it will rain two weeks on thursday!

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 20/10/2015 19:22

Im hoping for no snow. It should stay on Christmas cards and pretty scenery pictures. Its just so disruptive. If it did snow Id like it to snow every year and heavy so we would be used to it and it would just be the norm.

MrsJorahMormont · 21/10/2015 13:38

Yes there's lots of stuff on the internet at the minute about a very cold winter. We had a hellish one a few years back and that was enough for me! We have moved to a slightly hilly area so it's a complete bollocks if there's snow.

MrsJorahMormont · 21/10/2015 13:40

And yes harleen true about snow every year. I have lived in a couple of very cold places but because they were used to it the roads and pavements were always miraculously clear! They had huge teams of snowploughs and mini ones for laneways and pavements.

megletthesecond · 23/10/2015 20:15

Did they even predict the 09/10 winter hell? Iirc we had head's up a week or two before it moved over us then red warnings 24hrs in advance.
