Well, its that time of year where we start wondering about the winter to come. Will it be mild, wet, stormy or buckets of snow for all?

Of course it is impossible to tell, last years guesscast went quite well, but probably down to luck and vagueness of words Grin

There is much talk of El Nino - and it is a very strong one at present. NOAA give a 95% probability of El Nino persisting through this winter. El Nino afftects temperatures in the Pacific – warming parts of it. This can have a knock on effect for us, though not always as great as people seem to think. However it cannot be ignored. It seems to be associated with cold winters, but not exclusively, mild and wet winters have also occurred during El Nino.

The North Atlantic Oscillation can also have an affect. It is hard to forecast this more than a couple of weeks in advance – there seem to be a wide spread of solutions in two weeks. To predict it we need to look at the temperatures in the Atlantic. The north Atlantic is colder than usual but the tropical Atlantic is warmer than usual. Interesting. The met office seem to think this will lead to a positive NOA led winter – which tends to be mild.
As a result of their positive NOA prediction the met office are suggesting that it is more likely to be a warmer than average Oct-Dec than a colder than average winter. here Somewhat amusingly though they also suggest that the Oct-Dec period is more likely to be wetter than average. Well, half way through Oct and looking forward, this forecast doesn’t seem to be playing out. Their next issue will be in about 10 days time .
Another factor to look at is towards the east – any long lasting cold air tends to come from that direction. And we have an impressive start to the season. Russia has had widespread snowfall, in fact, some are saying that it is a record start. If it doesn’t thaw (it is very early in the season!) this is good news for cold weather.

So where are we at? Conflicting ideas – it could be a very cold winter, there are indications to support that but equally many factors contradict those signals. We will just have to wait and see.

Next update, end of half term :)

fog was fun this morning here!

I don't know if it's late but we don't seem to have had any frost on hampshire yet. There's still lots of dahlias and urban wildflowers ticking over nicely.

I still haven't found any winter boots (nasty sprain / stress fracture in the spring and all the boots I try hurt my foot) so the cold can hold off for a bit longer.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/11/2015 09:32

I don't think that is especially unusual. But it is pretty mild. We ceremoniously turned the heating on yesterday, only to find that it wasn't cold enough for the thermostat to come on. That was slightly disappointing!

Looks like the atlantic may bring us some rather more unsettled weather this weekend with it becoming rather windy. Keeping a bit of an eye on Monday.

I'm quite glad it's on the mild side at the moment ~ my heating's gone kaput and I have a plumber swearing at it working on it at the moment!

In more Christmassy/wintry news and for a bit of fun, netweather's Santa shaker is back!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 04/11/2015 10:55

I can remember going to a friend's birthday party in late November about five years ago and having to drive the long main road way because of thick snow. It's mild as hell here today by comparison.

We haven't had decent snow here in Suffolk for about three years. I'd love to see some this year.

Dawndonnaagain · 05/11/2015 08:55

I nearly got stuck in snow around Oxford MsAdora a few years back!
It is very mild here, and the shaker only promises a 15% chance of snow at the moment. I want it to wait until I've done the winter shop so that both freezers are full and then I would love proper snow!

Dawndonnaagain · 05/11/2015 11:59

Just read this back, bloody autocorrect, must work out how to turn it off, it's meant to be Yoxford!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/11/2015 15:20

That's about four miles from me. Grin

wasabipeanut · 05/11/2015 16:44

It's just hideous here in Berkshire. Muggy and rainy. Mud and leaves everywhere. Feels too hot with the heating on but a bit too chilly if you sit still with it off.

I want frost, clear skies and an excuse to pull out the winter gear! At the moment the only outdoor garb one requires is a rain hat.

Dawndonnaagain · 05/11/2015 17:13

Tis the same here, wasabi. I need an excuse to get my boots out and it isn't happening!

GloriaSmud · 06/11/2015 06:43

Festive scenes approaching ~ on one of my favourite webcams, Rovaniemi in Finland, they've just put their Christmas tree up!

As with other areas of the country, was rather wet and 'orrible here (Leicester) yesterday ~ I had to nip to the allotment and not surprisingly, the allotment cat and I were the only ones there!

Stokey · 07/11/2015 08:14

Very muggy and rainy here in London. Impossible to know what to wear.
Does this mean all predictions of a freezing winter are off

DD1 turned 6 yesterday and the winter she was born was very snowy & icy. Dd2 (3.5) has barely seen snow. I hoped this would be her year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/11/2015 08:46

the met office hint that it is could be a winter of two halves - unsettled and wet, then cold. I certainly wouldn't write off winter because of November weather.

Wet and warm in Suffolk, horrible.
OYBBY I'm crossing my fingers. I love being snowed in, although I want to know the freezer is okay first! Grin

SideOrderofChips · 07/11/2015 11:47

Im really hoping for a cold one. Metcheck is suggesting Feb/March to be cold

GloriaSmud · 07/11/2015 17:16

The Express and their 'winter forecast'
Hmm

Dawndonnaagain · 07/11/2015 17:30

28 years of Express forecasting! Grin

Hi OYBBK Gloria and other meteorological folk. Any clues what the jet stream is doing this year? Specifically is it behaving like the flooding winter of 13/14? Every time the weather person talks about lows traversing the Atlantic fear clutches my heart. It may take a few winters before my equilibrium recovers.

SideOrderofChips · 07/11/2015 18:44

Gloriasmud

At least their consistant GrinGrinGrin

SideOrderofChips · 07/11/2015 18:44

*they're. Gah.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/11/2015 18:56

I was laughing at the 'worst winter FIVE YEARS' as if 5 years was a particularly outrageous length of time, when I noticed the headline in the sidebar. 'Britain to be smashed by worst storm in a YEAR'.

Which is essentially just the worst storm since the last time we had a storm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/11/2015 19:35

At the moment the jetstream looks pretty ordinary for this time of year. A fair bit of rain around, but not extreme.

Thank you OYBBK. Flowers

Next week still looks ok for the south of the uk from what I've seen.

Today is annoying me. It can't make up its mind.

Perihelion · 13/11/2015 14:38

Today Edinburgh has decided it's winter. Big temp drop, wind, rain and SLEET.
