So some snow starved areas have finally had a little taste of snow. What will happen next?

met office weather warnings I'm still very unsure as to why they have overnight warnings for central areas, but there you go. Most likely areas to see heavy snow overnight are NE England into Lincolnshire but I think a fair bit may be rain near the coast.

Nothing....Nada....not even a hailstone a little north of Newcastle...and I've been desperate for it to snow :(

SwedeDreams · 03/02/2015 20:25

Well, we had a little bit of snow this morning in London, all gone by midday though. thanks for starting another thread kitten, let's hope this one brings some proper drifts!

GloriaSmud · 03/02/2015 20:37

Yay ~ a new (excellently-titled!), snow covered (or not) winter thread!
We had a brief snow flurry this morning but that's been it today. I can see some showers heading southwards on raintoday but don't think there's going to be a lot/any for us tonight. Temperature's 0.6C at the moment.

ColdJerseySpud · 03/02/2015 20:48

We had a bit more snow this evening but only in certain areas ie the one i was in lol.

You would be amazed the varying weather for such a small island!

MrsVamos · 03/02/2015 20:56

Little weeny bit here today, I would like a right good dumping.

Keep being warned of snowmageddon, I am very disappointed.

Newbiecrafter · 03/02/2015 21:34

I know I'm a bit late, but we had snow!!!! Yay!!!! Went to bed last night at around 120 and there was nothing. Woke up this morning to bout an inch. The kids jumped out of bed and we had a snowball fight this morning.

It was so exciting. All gone now, but at least we had some.

Have missed out on lamppost watching but have also been marvelling at the rooftops and melt rates. Ours melts off quickly and we have the standard depth of insulation. Other houses still had snow on them til the evening.
Should we be adding more?

Thanks as ever OYBBK and Gloria for the weather information you put out. You are the most accurate.

OYBBK, sorry to hear you've been poorly. Thanks and a Brew for you.

Xxx

meglet · 03/02/2015 22:36

I'm glad there are other rooftop snow melt watchers. I'm always pondering whether some houses have excellent insulation or they just don't put their heating on.

WhispersOfWickedness · 03/02/2015 22:42

I thought it was just me with the rooftop melting watchingBlushGrin
Ours is not too bad, especially since we aren't stingey with the heating Smile The loft is always freezing when you go up there, so think we're ok with our insulation Smile

JillJ72 · 03/02/2015 22:47

Our Victorian lady lets hot air escape around the chimney. One day Rodney, one day....

FunMitFlags · 04/02/2015 07:36

Is there any sign of this cold snap coming to and end, even a tiny glimmer of hope I can cling to?

I'm not a million miles from Gloria and we've had no snow (other than flurries that don't stick) but it is ridiculously cold. I think we're in a particularly windy spot which isn't helping. Yesterday was the first day I can remember where I cut short my dog's walk as I couldn't bear to be out in the wind any longer. The only other time I remember feeling so cold was in a snowy Boston winter.

I want spring

43cupsoftea · 04/02/2015 08:04

Any chance of snow in Nottm? We seem to be under the Met office warning but not on the forecast. Perhaps it's the ice they are warning about?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2015 08:29

Argh, I hate it when the ipad reloads the page half way through typing and loses everything.

So today and tomorrow some snow or rain showers down the eastern side. Many areas will stay dry though. Into the weekend it looks a little warmer by day and very settled and dry for at least a few days. Going to be quite uninspiring, but at least not disruptive.

Thank you newbie :)
I think that maybe you should check your loft insulation, including around the hatch. If you wait just a little longer you might find loads in b&q being sold off cheap.

tawnyowlsrock · 04/02/2015 11:31

Is there snow overnite in se

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2015 11:32

maybe a little.

OP posts:
girliefriend · 04/02/2015 11:52

Seem to have had a lot of hail this year, beautiful day today cold but clear and sunny Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2015 13:01

I have a theory that may be completely wrong, that we are getting more hail because the seas are warmer than usual, driving convection which produces hail.

NickAngel · 04/02/2015 14:11

Beautiful here today but temp has dropped and skies looking slate grey now.
No snow forecast but it feels ominous outside

girliefriend · 04/02/2015 15:58

Whats convection? I don't think we will get snow, in the 20 odd years I have lived in Somerset it has only properly snowed about 5 times!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2015 16:19

Convection is when warm air rises.

In this context the moist warm air over the sea rises because it has extra energy given by the heat. If the clouds are deep enough (so created by lots of energy) then water droplets are lifted by updraughts above freezing level, where they freeze.

I think there is some evidence that our weather may be becoming more convective driven (hence the more extreme downpours etc) but lots more research needed.

GloriaSmud · 04/02/2015 21:23

We had a very slight covering of snow this morning but it all melted quickly once the sun came out. Might be another covering tomorrow as we're forecast some more tomorrow morning.
The Daily Mail has some excellent pictures of how the snow is affecting the country here.

ColdJerseySpud · 04/02/2015 23:34

It is bloody baltic here at the minute! Still getting the odd wintry showers and all that but nothing major

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2015 07:43

weather warnings

And it's snowing proper snow here AND I finally feel much better. Woo hoo!

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2015 07:49

So we have a nice blob of precip over the SE. Not sure it warrants the warning but it's nice to have a little snow.

Hurray for OYBBK! Way up north the thaw is setting in - I might get in a final sledge down the hill to get towards school, but am sure that will be it for the winter. Been a good run though - I love the days when the snow has settled but the roads are under control and there's no disruption.
