Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

Wind's back and the temp has gone from 4C to 12C in a couple of hours. And we're supposed to have snow tomorrow? Pressure's dropped again, but not as fast as yesterday..... dropped 20mb in 5 hours.

digerd · 09/01/2015 20:06

Just heard the words "bitterly cold" on ch 5 weather news. But outside it is 14. Was 12 an hour ago. SE

My bedroom radiator inlet valve has got stuck again while turned off and will not come on, and as my bedroom is under a flat roof extension it does get cold.
Must remember to phone my emergency plumbing insurers tomorrow.
It is a quick job and have been able to do it myself before but not anymore Was hoping this mild weather might stay for a few weeksHmm

GloriaSmud · 09/01/2015 20:52

We reached a high of 15.4C at 6.47pm, 14.6C at the moment ~ tis very strange to go out there and feel how warm it is for a January night. We're right on the edge of the yellow warning area for wind ~ highest gust so far 16mph at 8.24pm.
'Tis looking colder for next week.

Newbiecrafter · 09/01/2015 21:53

We're nowhere near the yellow warnings, but it's very windy at the moment. We're outside SW London. It must be scary under the warning areas.

Hope everyone's ok.

wind warnings come south again into our area.

BlackeyedSantaStuckUpAChimney · 09/01/2015 23:06

we have been warned of a sudden temperature drop and a very windy/squally band of rain going through in the morning. that will be noisy.

MrsVamos · 09/01/2015 23:10

Hope everyone stays safe tonight.

Very windy here. SE.

I'm sorry, I can't help myself.

atticusclaw · 09/01/2015 23:10

Wind is going crazy here in Notts at the moment. We have a snow warning up too. There's still some left here from the Boxing Day dump, I don't want anymore yet.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 10/01/2015 04:23

It's very windy in Edinburgh but nothing compared to last night, my trampoline is trying to move but is tied down more securely.

Straitjacket · 10/01/2015 04:58

The wind is really picking up in Birmingham, too.

My front door is banging away I knew it was poorly fitted, but didn't realise just how bad until now!, letter box is going like someone is constantly knocking with the odd few seconds break here and there. I can hear bin lids opening and banging, and when I popped to the kitchen to grab a drink, I saw rubbish and leaves flying about outside. It is whistling and howling all around and down the chimney. This is the worst I have ever known (probably slept through worse before, or can't remember anything like this from when I lived up North as a child), and when I just checked the local weather station, the gusts are only 36mph currently. I was expecting it to be closer to 50!

If it's this bad at 36mph, my thoughts really do go out to those in the North!

Ginfox · 10/01/2015 07:45

Hello all

Just reporting in from north Western Isles. We lost power in early hours of Friday, then phones went too. A major incident was called because we had no 999 cover(!), so anyone in trouble had to get themselves to a fire station or other appointed place to get help.

I've only just found all this out because the info was released on t'internet which was - you guessed it - not working! (It might've been announced on radio, but no reception here because booster station doesn't work in power cuts.)

Neighbours have lost some roof tiles, and apparently a local church has lost its entire roof. All fairly standard winter activity up here though Grin

Woke up bloody cold, but happily discovered power is back, so haven't got another day of feeding a v hungry wood stove to keep warm, and trying to entertain kids without cbeebies!

Wind's got up here as well (Leicester) ~ highest gust so far 19mph at 5.17am. Will be interesting to see how quickly the temperatures drop today ~ it's 13.9c at the moment.

Metoffice have got an amber warning for Orkney and Shetland ~ they could see gusts near to 100mph. Hope everyone stays safe in all warning areas.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2015 08:33

Morning all.
Welcome back to the world of electricity Ginfox - it sounds rather dramatic!

a lot of snow about for many parts of Scotland away from coasts mostly. weather warnings Maybe some for parts of nothern England too.

torro have issued a convective discussion til 1pm.

Next deep low to watch is Wednesday/thursday - this one at present looks to track further south, not as severe as the Scottish twins, but nevertheless, potentially quite potent.

GloriaSmud · 10/01/2015 08:45

Temperature seems to be dropping here already ~ was 14C at 5.47am and 11.7C now.

JKSLtd · 10/01/2015 08:51

Oybbk - any chance the midweek activity could bring snow to the south?

Hope everyone stays safe through this weekend. It's windy enough In essex to have kept me awake. Badly fitted windows don't help.

mankyscotslass · 10/01/2015 09:09

It was really windy overnight here, still is blustery now, but dry.

It was very warm overnight too -but the temperature does seem to be dropping here now.

Igneococcus · 10/01/2015 09:11

This is weird, it's hailing right now but there are also snow flakes. It's like a hail version of sleet. I have never seen that before.
The cat came shooting through the cat flap a little while after it started looking very pissed off.

MrsVamos · 10/01/2015 09:21

SE.

Still windy here although nothing compared to further up.

Electricity cut out for a while last night.

Windy and wet today.

Hope everyone OK.

Perihelion · 10/01/2015 09:25

Morning, still a wee bit windy in Edinburgh and the temp has dropped down to 3C.........Come on the SNOW Grin

SpottyTeacakes · 10/01/2015 09:49

SE. Breezy 12 degrees light rain.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 10/01/2015 09:50

Still windy here (central south east) but I don't think it's quite as bad as in the night.

Hope everyone is ok!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2015 10:45

Currently gusting between around 40-50mph in much of England (funny how daylight changes perception) higher along the coast and in Wales.

Latest high gust for Scotland is I believe at Glen Ogle -82mph.
