Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

This night was a lot worse here in my part of Argyll than the weather bomb before Christmas at least for wind. My neighbour's bin came roliing across the front lawn taking down the rickety fence. It's calming down now a bit.
How is everybody else?

FlankShaftMcWap · 09/01/2015 06:37

North East Scotland here, near the coast. BBC predicted winds of up to 40mph, I have no idea what the actual wind speed is but I'm guessing OYBBK was way nearer the mark as it's hideous here. We have nothing between us and the coast, just flat farmland so we're really getting battered Sad
I've been awake all night and I'm not looking forward to today, I reckon alot of my fences are going to be damaged. Thankfully the horses and cattle are all indoors!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2015 07:07

A record 113mph gust recorded at Stornaway airport.

Hope those affected are ok, can't imagine what it sounded like, we just had a very windy night here but I still woke a few times in the night.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2015 07:38

Winds will die down today over Scotland - a small chance to secure property before round two overnight. The next storm does not look as potent, but nevertheless unwelcome to those who have damaged property. Generally gusts of around 6-070mph but higher in more exposed locations. Tomorrow heavy rain turning increasingly to heavy snow, especially away from coasts. Very unpleasant for those with power cuts.

And can I just say a grrrrrr on behalf of you up there for the lack of coverage this is getting on radio 4 this morning. They don't appear to realise that this is severe compared even to usual Scottish winter storms.

Angry at radio 4. The bbc website does have this report along with a rolling news type blog here for updates.

There are also Scotrail and trafficscotland for updates.

Perihelion

What a muppet. I hope his insurance refuse to pay out. He's bloody lucky to be alive. I hope no one gets hurt sorting it out. Idiot.

Flank. I hope there's not too much damage x

It's still blowing here. Neighbours washing clinging to the line for it's life. I'm amazed it's still there tbh.

My trampoline is 2 gardens down from me, Im just waiting on my Dad coming to attempt to unjam it from my neighbours fence

Dad to the rescue, we have secured it with more rope and tied it to the washing pole as well as the fence, now I just have to deal with my recycling flying everywhere.

Hope everyone is safe.

Igneococcus · 09/01/2015 08:39

We are on emergency generator at work at the moment but the village half a mile up the road is entriely dark.

On my way to work I drove past a flock of sheep all huddled together in a bit of lower ground, poor things.

Perihelion · 09/01/2015 09:17

Chipping the last van driver who tried and failed to drive over the bridge in that weather was found guilty of dangerous driving and banned for a year.

Much much calmer now. No real damage either. There's a shed and a fence over nearby, but only twigs and no roof tiles lying around.
I think that red warnings should be reserved for the worst weather at the worst time, otherwise they will be ignored. However the Western Isles and NW Scotland should have been under one last night. But the local council and emergency services in the Western Isles are pretty good at making their own call (as they have ) and shutting schools and public transport etc.

nemno · 09/01/2015 10:33

Sounds like lots of you had a rough night. I do hope tonight is better. Thank you for your reassurance re the jet stream and where it 'should' be.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 09/01/2015 13:31

When is the snow due kitten? and is it Scotland?

I like the snow - to look at, not for driving in.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 09/01/2015 13:43

Our trampoline has been tied even tighter for tonight, I cannot move it, it's too heavy so how the wind managed to blow it I don't know, it's broken my neighbours washing line and damaged their fence too. Blush

Roseformeplease · 09/01/2015 14:50

Wild, wild night here (North West Scotland) even by our standards. Kept awake nearly all night by the battering of the winds and rattling of slates. Power went about 2 and returned about noon but has just gone off again, and then on an hour later. School cancelled (no power, no heat, no light) and shops all closed. Didn't notice we didn't make it to Today programme - no power to hear it! Am reminded of bad storms last year, hitting the West and then promising huge surges along the East. Nothing on the news but extensive coverage of Mandela's death - even down to interviewing such renowned political commentators as Tiger Woods. I complained. BBC has a duty to warn people. Apparently, I WNBU, complaint upheld.

More to follow tonight although with possible snow and ice. Fire lit, soup made, torches full of batteries and duvets lugged down to the sofa.

Ursaminor · 09/01/2015 14:54

Another in the North East of Scotland, right next to the sea, who had a sleepless night - really was blowing a hoolie! Lots of trees down, and fences and gates flattened. But amazingly we have avoided any power cuts. A tad worried about what tonight will bring.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2015 15:32

Snow is for scotland and now also for parts of northern England and will affect people tomorrow. It will be very unwanted by those affected by today's storm.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 09/01/2015 15:56

I was hoping the snow would be in the South tomorrow, I can never see any snow warnings when I look, there are many homes without electricity so let hope it doesn't snow.

SpottyTeacakes · 09/01/2015 16:02

The warning for snow is covering a massive area. Sad Hope they can get the power on soon

Igneococcus · 09/01/2015 16:21

It's perfectly calm at the moment, not a twig is moving. I'm sure that will change soon.

GlOricella · 09/01/2015 17:23

hello world - just go the power back on in our bit of the Highlands, after it went off at 2 am. Was pretty rough indeed overnight - but surprising how quickly it must have passed through. By 9 am it was calm enough to rebuild the chicken coop and to clear the tree that came down over neighbours car :(

On the plus side - we're looking good for firewood for next year

Now off to check what's in store next

GlOricella · 09/01/2015 17:24

Oh, and big round applaus for the SSE engineers who are doing a hell of a job in every sence of the word

Roseformeplease · 09/01/2015 18:01

Yes. Amazing that they got things back on so quickly.

Igneococcus · 09/01/2015 18:17

I can't get any of the BBC channels or 4 or 5 at the moment. Is that storm related? Is anybody else at the west coast having problems?
STV works fine.
