Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

Just had to double the volume on the TV to cover up the wind and hailstones lashing the window. On the West facing the sea.

GloriaSmud · 07/01/2015 21:26

Thanks Newbie ~ it'll be nice when they're all over and done with.
Weather models are laughing at us ~ throwing in their hints of snow and then pulling away again.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 07/01/2015 21:42

it's the gales bothering me, I have a fear of gales and it's been windy in Scotland today, I will worry about the snow if it happens

BlackeyedSantaStuckUpAChimney · 07/01/2015 23:21

snow haters, panic ye not and let us snow lovers get excited until the next forecast is published and the possibility disappears again.

BlackeyedSantaStuckUpAChimney · 07/01/2015 23:22

arse... happened already. x posted.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2015 07:07

The storm overnight looks really nasty for those in Scotland and we are still looking at gusts of 100mph for those in exposed locations and 80-90mph more widely in northern Scotland.

At the moment the second storm in the early hours of Saturday looks to have moved a little north, giving Scotland more of a sideswipe. I wouldn't fully relax about it at this point but at present it is giving me less cause for concern.

on the ships (shipping forecast) last night there was a mention of severe storm 11 possibly hurricane force 12... Shock

SpottyTeacakes · 08/01/2015 11:00

It's really flooded round here, I only just made it home. Dh will have to go the long way round home I'm surprise no yellow warning for rain?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2015 11:22

I was quite surprised by the quantity of rain. As you may have gathered I don't have as much time as usual to do my weather watching - I'm up to my ears in real life.

GloriaSmud · 08/01/2015 11:24

Whereabouts are you Spotty? We've had a lot of rain this morning ~ it's been proper grim and the temperature's dropped from 8C when I started on the school run at 8am to 6.6C now (Leicester)
The metoffice have updated their warnings and we've now got snow added into the mix for northern areas/Scotland, Saturday and Sunday.

SpottyTeacakes · 08/01/2015 11:27

I'm sussex/Surrey border. We're quite rural and have trouble with our back roads and flooding. It does ten to go down fairly quickly once the rain stops, usually. Think it's eased off now.

BlackeyedSantaStuckUpAChimney · 08/01/2015 11:33

W MIDS we had quite a bit of rain, not as heavy as it could have been and the road was not flooded today. bright and sunny now though.

Perihelion · 08/01/2015 11:43

Not sure if I believe the snow warnings as I bought DD new snow trousers at the weekend....

Interesting weather warnings Shock..... Heads up for an Amber wind warning for the Central Belt of Scotland tomorrow as well as further North.

And possibly snow at the weekend Grin Grin Grin....Sorry Magi

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2015 14:27

It does look a rough few days. Yes snow does seem likely on Saturday for those in the highlighted areas.

Strong jet stream says that planes have been arriving at Heathrow from the US, 60-90 mins early due to the jet stream being so strong today.

Loads of rain in Edinburgh yesterday and this morning. The ground's saturated. I hate this sort of winter weather. Give me frost and no muddy dogs ( and snow )

Newbiecrafter · 08/01/2015 16:55

Perihelion [ shock]

I thought the jet stream was much higher up. I guess that what 'tail wind' means.

BlackeyedSantaStuckUpAChimney · 08/01/2015 18:30

thanks peri. great link.

nemno · 08/01/2015 19:28

Just the mention of the jet stream has me on alert. How is it looking please kitten? I'm the one with the flood hangover from exactly this time last year, central south England.

SpottyTeacakes · 08/01/2015 19:33

We flew home from New York in five hours last month. Turbulence was horrendous though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2015 22:07

At the moment widespread flooding like last year doesn't look to be an issue. However tonight's storm very much is for those in Scotland. Not only northern Scotland, but the central belt between Glasgow and Edinburgh where these winds are not so common. Damaging storm force winds.

OP posts:
Perihelion · 08/01/2015 22:32

Central Belt gets battered when the wind's more Westerly than SW, which it is for this storm. Am assuming it's because of the topography. Wind gets funnelled sideyways across the country, without the hills getting in the way ( that's my best technical description Wink )

Think you're safe down South atm, the Jet stream is in it's "proper" place, bringing the wind and rain to Scotland.......Last winter was less wet than normal for us.

Wind starting to pick up, but nothing exciting/scary yet.

Perihelion · 09/01/2015 00:03

And with a Westerly, Ireland doesn't get in the way either........

Wind's getting it's act together now. Forth Bridge has just had a gust of 71mph.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 09/01/2015 00:31

We haven't had that much rain here, very little really, but the fields are lakes again. Clearly the land is still so sodden from last year. (Central South East)

Do you think we'll get snow down in the CSE OYBBK?

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 09/01/2015 02:54

Woken by the wind, it's howling out there, I hate the wind Sad

Perihelion · 09/01/2015 03:11

Morning Wimpy, just about asleep at about 1am, when there was fierce wind, rain and thunder too, house was rattling. DD was woken and came into bed. Took up all my space and I've been trying to sleep in her bed, but her room faces more into the weather and the window's are howling. And I'm sore, so have decided to drink tea for a bit.

Just seen that some fanny decided to ignore the restrictions on the Forth Bridge ( may have actually been shut and def only cars ) and tried to cross in their Luton van. Was overturned by 91mph gust. No one hurt, but they can't retrieve it till the wind dies down. Which they reckon will be mid- morning. Police are apparently dealing with the fuckwit......
