Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

Wimpy you're far too reasonable.........

GIVE ME MY SNOW BACK NOW!

(Actually pleased that there's other grown ups who get excited about snow. DD is going to get a lecture when she comes back from her pals' house about getting her priorities in order.....I mean what's more important, playing with a friend or going on a wild goosechase, fueled with vain hope and over optimism to find a hill still worthy of sledging??? )

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 29/01/2015 16:28

It will most likely come back, it likes to tease you. Grin Apparently Yorkshire have a lot. Envy I woke to all white, reversed car very carefully, shopped for 2 hours and came home to nothing and I have no weather warnings anymore. [sigh]

pigsinmud · 29/01/2015 16:31

Very exciting. Storm came over the fields towards us! Graupel covering the main road already. Very dark. Lightning too!

LumpySpacedPrincess · 29/01/2015 16:32

Just got back from work and East Kent is now under the yellow warning!

BBC showing us as heavy rain from 5, could it possibly fall as snow?

pigsinmud · 29/01/2015 16:35

Big flakes now in the Surrey Hills!

MrsVamos · 29/01/2015 16:39

Pah.

Teasing piddly little snowflakes.

Well I don't find it funny.

I would like proper, big snowflakes, that settle so I can build a snowman and have a snowball fight.

I am going to persuade DH that we need to move to Greenland or somewhere.

Or up north.

I've got to keep trying, haven't I ?

mummylin2495 · 29/01/2015 16:39

Can't bloody believe it, I went to have a bath and now dh just told me we had hail and sleety stuff and I missed it !

FyreFly · 29/01/2015 16:39

:( We just had a little more, but you can see the cloud line moving away. Nowt but clear skies behind it sigh that's all folks! Here's hoping some more moves in overnight.

MrsVamos · 29/01/2015 16:40

Peri

Maybe we should get together and go 'oop north' for a few days ?

I'd sledge with you !

nikki1978 · 29/01/2015 16:42

Wahey! Snow in East surrey and settling but only lightly :)

pigsinmud · 29/01/2015 16:47

Excitement over. It's stopped!

MrsVamos · 29/01/2015 16:49

Its not fair, is it schilke. Sad

Its surely our turn soon ?

MixenLane · 29/01/2015 16:55

Can't help smiling at all the snow lovers who are desperate for the stuff !

It started to snow here just as I left the house this morning, then it cleared on my way to the office. At around 8.30am it really started to come down in the Stockport area and I reckon by the time it finished we'd had about 2 inches.
Best part of the day ? The drive home was bliss. The roads were clear of snow until I got back to my village. Quieter than a Sunday evening. Took me about 25 minutes where it normally takes an hour. I can only assume that a lot of people didn't bother trying to go to work this morning, or those that did made a decision to leave mid morning when it looked like we were going to get snowed in.

LeftyLoony · 29/01/2015 16:59

Just bucketed it down for about 5 mins, now almost stopped and melting Sad

GloriaSmud · 29/01/2015 17:00

Stopped here pretty quickly but we do have a covering amounting to all of 0.5-1cm! It's 0.5C at the moment and think from the netweather radar there are still some more snow showers to come this evening/overnight.

MrsVamos · 29/01/2015 17:07

Poor Lefty.

Ours all gone. Sad

Gloria

Blow harder ! Blush Grin

Have to say, all credit once again to lovely OYBBK and Gloria. Bang on with forecasts.

You do know I check your weather posts every day, don't you. [sad cow emoticon]

MixenLane · 29/01/2015 17:15

Posted too soon.

Wanted to say thank you to Kitten, you were spot on yesterday when I described my route today for some work errands. I cancelled them after I read your post and I'm so glad that I did, thanks for the personal forecast, much appreciated.

JillJ72 · 29/01/2015 17:23

GloriaSmud your snow at 2 was my 2.50pm torrential hailstorm that turned to snow. Whiteout, roads covered within 10 mins, yet 5 mins after that was clear the fritters had been out to maximise school run tyre warm age, as the roads were sodden rather than completely iced / slushed / snowy.

My barometer is flashing at me that something bad is on its way - hopefully snow. It's darned parky out there and if the sky clears it'll be a skating rink in the morning. Wait and see.....

JillJ72 · 29/01/2015 17:26

Just reading upthread.... was that big hailstorm actually graupel? I really didn't know how to describe it because to me hail isn't a long continuous delivery of ice, it's usually short lived, but this just kept giving and giving and giving and then 10 mins in it became fluffy and floaty and snow...

LIZS · 29/01/2015 17:51

Got caught in hail then snow on the school run . Roads covered in just a few minutes and very slippery coming home especially following cars who seemed to think it good to crawl up the long hill. You need low engine revs and to keep moving !

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2015 17:58

Mixen you are really welcome - Im glad you could cancel :)

If it was the same as us Jill it was definitely hail. graupel is like little pellets of polystyrene - as though as bean bag has exploded.

We had a whole two minutes of snow after a good deluge of hail. It then rained and washed it all away. Currently 1c so its looking like an icy night in store.

Still nothing in my little corner of Kent except bloody rain. Sad

BlackeyedSusan · 29/01/2015 18:08

we have had snow! well a short burst that went through in about fifteen minutes, but left a 1/2cm layer. we scraped up snow from the benches near the library to make a snowman or two if something less than a foot high counts. we messed about making patterns and ds threw snow balls at the wall.

MegBusset · 29/01/2015 18:10

Snowed for the best part of an hour at work today (Norfolk), had a nice covering of an inch or two. Drove home a few miles away... Nothing! Kids v disappointed and have been making snowballs with the leftovers on my car!

mankyscotslass · 29/01/2015 18:26

More snow! Really heavy and thick and roads not cleared.
