Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

I noticed my local Morrisons have put out sledges for sale. I hope we get a wee drop. Im addicted to this thread and Met Office.

BiddyPop · 26/01/2015 14:20

I need to have a good look at the various forcast sites I use - to see if we might get a few flakes over here in Dublin!!

We have all the gear, and I did a proper re-stock food shopping this weekend - as we had run down a lot of stocks by buying very little and using up cupboard things over January, not seeing an apocalypse coming! Grin

What I need to know most is what days are most likely for snow, to plan travel those days. And to make sure I balance my heavy thermal layers towards the worst days rather than milder ones. Today - I am in a sleeveless thermal vest, and a dress over thermal tights and heels, but wore my snowboots for the commute. Whereas on worse days, I go to heavier sleeved thermals, woolly jumper and trousers over thermal leggings.

And I need to plan on what days I need to threaten DD about wearing proper layers (she'd wear a tshirt under a light hoodie with no jacket if she could get away with it - even when it is under 10 degrees outside. I'll accept in the higher end (with a jacket in hand if not on shoulders), but not once the mercury drops below 5 degrees or the wind chill comes up).

Thanks Kitten and GloriaGrin

TwentiethCenturyGirl · 26/01/2015 19:03

Gah. We are in the NW and look like we're right on the edge of the warning area - however our 5 day forecast shows nothing but rain. We always miss out. Humph!

LumpySpacedPrincess · 26/01/2015 19:41

Gah, nothing for Kent. Hey ho, it could change. [hopefulemoticon]

Latest thoughts on the cold weather from The Weather Outlook.

Lumpy (and others living in the south) here's something that might raise your excitement levels ~ "The early part of next week is also worth keeping a close eye on because this could be the best chance of the winter for a decent fall of snow in parts of southern England. I’m not confident about how this will pan out, but there are signs of disturbances moving down from the north or northwest bringing the potential for a more prolonged period of snow rather than just showers."

meglet · 26/01/2015 21:58

thanks Gloria .

I'm currently indulging in snow porn and looking at the NY twitter feeds Envy .

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/01/2015 07:59

morning all. Maybe a little snow in the parts of the south on thursday just to make us feel a little included.

For tomorrow a lot of rain will precede the snow moving from the north, so if you are hit by heavy rain first, don't be fooled, especially in central scotland where it will later turn to heavy snow. some snow later for parts of northern England.

thursday, a mix of scattered snow and rain showers.

ditto friday and saturday.

Watching Monday night closely. temps are looking rather marginal but there is a little potential for a widespread snow event.

more details later. another bonkers day but they will ease soon.

PestoSnowissimos · 27/01/2015 10:31

I would do a little snow dance myself, but wanting to hold off until I've replenished my store-cupboard at Costco Grin

MrsVamos · 27/01/2015 11:01

Grin @ Pesto

Go early - today !

If we dance together we might create a decent snowfall not just a few flakes.

hoochymama1 · 27/01/2015 11:28

Snow porn, meglet Grin
I'm up for a snow dance as long as it isnt on friday as I have to drive through the peak district

GloriaSmud · 27/01/2015 12:39

Meglet I started a 'snowcam' thread here at the beginning of December of snowy places. So here's some more snow porn for you and other snow lovers Grin

Updated weather warnings from the metoffice and the southern edge is inching closer to where I am (Leicester)

Wind's getting up here now. I am expecting to see snow tomorrow night when I rive home from work late.

Would it be wrong to wake DD for a midnight sledge? Grin

Perihelion · 27/01/2015 22:04

BlackeyedSusan · 27/01/2015 23:44

FatJerseyPostXmasSpud · 27/01/2015 23:58

We're now getting snow predictions for Jersey for Thursday and Saturday :O

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/01/2015 07:59

Perihelion sometime today it does look likely.

Looks like my snow tomorrow is going to be robbed. again.

Its going to be a slow moving affair today and tomorrow, and some parts of northern England could see sleet at first until it turns to snow later. Some havy snow in the Pennines tomorrow.

Dark, wet, blustery but warm here (Leicester) Will be interesting to watch the temperature today ~ we had a high of 9.3C just over an hour ago and it's now 8.8C, so started dropping off already.

Perihelion ~ I would consider it your public duty, on behalf of all the UK's snow deprived MNers and youngsters, that you wake your DD up and go sledging at midnight.
