Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

I'll join you meglet im the wrong side of ports down hill in hampshire x

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 25/01/2015 10:16

If the snow could hold off till Sunday lunch time then it can do what it likes next weekend. I have to drive and I HATE snow when I have to go places.

SpottyTeacakes · 25/01/2015 10:29

For once I don't really have much planned (apart from work/school/nursery) so it can snow away Grin

oricella · 25/01/2015 10:46

I see the met office has it's weather warnings for snow from Wednesday out already..

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2015 10:55

Have just seen that oricella ~ linky thing to warnings page. They must be fairly certain of snow happening if they've brought them out so early.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 25/01/2015 11:02

Yey Im not quite in the warning area, but I do realise that there is still time for that to change. Actually to be fair its only Fri, Sat and Sun morning I dont want snow. If it snows Wed and is cleared by Friday evening that's fine too.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 25/01/2015 12:27

Can someone link to the weather warnings page for Wednesday, I can only seem to bring up today. TIA

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 25/01/2015 12:27

Oh I see Gloria has done, sorry.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2015 15:26

If you look at the matrix, although it doesn't look especially severe, the certainty is astonishingly high for this far in advance.

Once again nothing for us in Sussex! Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2015 19:44

Were you expecting some Lefty?

OP posts:
PestoSnowissimos · 25/01/2015 19:46

We had some on Tuesday though, Lefty Grin

Albeit briefly

WhispersOfWickedness · 25/01/2015 20:33

Well, that's not fair, the places under the weather warnings have already had snow! I am in a grump too, as we normally have snow at least once per winter, but have not had any since 2013 now Angry

WhispersOfWickedness · 25/01/2015 20:38

FFS, the met office has forecast 8c and heavy rain for us on Wednesday Hmm

Perihelion · 25/01/2015 20:45

10C in Edinburgh an hour ago. Dropped to 9C now. WTF?

Ah more snow warnings this week.........if it doesn't bring us enough snow for sledging, I'm using 1/2 term for a snow hunt up North.

LeftyLoony · 25/01/2015 21:26

No, not expecting any. Boo.
Pesto not sure where you are but we haven't had a single flake!

firstposts · 25/01/2015 21:32

The countryfile weather forecast didn't rule out snow for the south? Said they didn't know yet, or words to that effect. I am optimistic! (Triumph of hope over experience)

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2015 22:27

Not surprisingly, the Express has 'reported' on the coming cold spell with the headline ~ Britain on RED alert: Displaced Polar vortex to unleash weather hell next week (or that should be 'Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid!') and a more balanced report from the Independent.

micku5 · 26/01/2015 07:52

I saw that report too GloriaSmud and my first thought was to check this thread for a more accurate opinion.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2015 08:18

Morning all.

Well a change back to cold certainly seems on the cards now as an Icelandic low drops south over us bringing northerlies. This in my opinion tends to give the best set up for surprise snow giving little advance notice, though its not always a scenario that brings prolonged deep cold (for that I think that easterlies with a long standing high pressure over Europe is the best scenario).

So the cold weather moves south over Wednesday evening, to bring snow to northerly areas. Its not very cold and so some in the warning areas may be disappointed to recieve rain instead.

Through thursday the cold weather keeps moving south. Some snow/sleet and rain reaching southern areas by thursday lunchtime, though more likely to be rain near the southern coast.

Friday and Saturday look pretty settled, but cold. Maybe some light snow showers about.

I'm not going to attempt to forecast any further than that at present. Keep an eye out for little notice snow warnings.

met office warnings at the moment.

Metoffice have updated their warnings ~ although it looks similar to yesterdays warning, I think the southern edge has been brought a smidgen more south, as it covers the north Midlands now.
There's also a Level 2 Cold Weather Alert been issued as well.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2015 11:28

They've removed the western bias too.

OP posts:
BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 26/01/2015 11:37

The warnings have moved East a little bit as I am now in them, I wasn't yesterday. Wed/thurs is fine for me to snow though, Fri/Sat is not.

Friday and Saturday look pretty settled, but cold. Maybe some light snow showers about
Sounds good to me, but I am aware that this might change. Hopefully not to bad snow.

WhispersOfWickedness · 26/01/2015 12:25

Ooo, I am just under the warning now too, fingers crossed! Smile

SewingAndCakes · 26/01/2015 13:19

Can't wait for snow! We've still just about got a (very sad looking) snowman left from last Wednesday's snow here. As we're in a hilly part of the North West I think we'll definitely be able to build another one. Plus clearing the driveway of snow keeps me fit!
