Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

Thanks OYBBK

My iPhone says its -7 outside and it's usually colder than it says. Really don't want to get out of bed!

GloriaSmud · 23/01/2015 07:48

-2.8C here (Leicester) It was down to -4.8C at 2.47am. Shock and Brrrrr!

pigsinmud · 23/01/2015 08:20

-5.5 here in Surrey at 7. Gorgeous sunrise. Can't wait to walk the dog. I've realised I don't need snow, I just need frost. It really cheers me up Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/01/2015 08:55

Morning all. A low of -7.3C for us. car took some defrosting. its still -6C brrrrr...

That's funny - after a quiet cold week with snow staying on the ground it finally started warming up up north; woke last night of the thumps of snow sliding down the roof. Now raining - hopefully not a repeat of last week's snow melt floods

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/01/2015 09:04

I really think that the met office should issue flood warnings rather than heavy rain warnings to account for snow melt situations.

Arent they the environment agencies thing? Just had a met office warning for ice in this area when it is clearly warming upSad
But stil, I agree that dog walking is so much better on frosty ground rather than swampGrin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/01/2015 11:39

The met office heavy rain warnings are about the impacts of the heavy rain (ie flooding) and these impacts are similar to that of melt water. Agreed that there is a cross over with the environment agency but they are only responsible for warning of flooding due to main rivers, reservoirs and the sea not flooding from groundwater or surface water.
So there is a gap in the warning system.

Think the met office were rather caught on the hop by the deep cold last night! Temps here were around 4c colder than forecast. I hit a nice patch of ice this morning, I was fine, the bmw before me was not. Confused]

Next weekend is throwing up some interestingly wintry weather charts. Keeping my eye on those.

You know, I really think that the met office ice warnings for tomight should be much more extensive. The ground is really quite cold in many places (the frost has barely lifted in shaded areas here.) After the band of rain goes through tonight the skies look set to clear and temperatures drop. I think that many more places will be icy tomorrow than the warnings suggest. I think many central areas are at risk.

Thanks Kitten Smile You are right about the gap between env agency and met office. Bad flooding happens here every now and then with not much warning.
Still lying snow here at the end of a cold day. I think there is such a variable between urban and country areas. Even a mile into our local town, no snow and warmer by two degrees.
Thanks for doing all this weather tracking for usThanks

I'm pleased to see you taking a bit of interest in next w/e OYBBK. I lurk on the TWO forum and can see a degree of excitement building among certain members - but I don't take any notice of their optimism until you start joining in Grin

FatJerseyPostXmasSpud · 23/01/2015 20:11

Bloody cold and icy here in Jersey the past few days. Actually had to go buy my pony a stable rug as even she was getting cold!!

Is there any sign of the white stuff (not the frost) for us? I've had to deice the car three days in a row!

catslave · 23/01/2015 21:25

Definitely a discrepancy with the Met Office and reality in Cornwall - several snow and ice warnings this month with not a hint of anything other than drizzle and +4 temps, then the last two nights with no warning and a hard frost. Loads of accidents on the roads owing to black ice. Apparently it will be 4 degrees tonight, but it's actually 9 degrees with lukewarm drizzle! Hoping for another cold snap, though...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2015 09:06

Still looks interesting for next weekend :)

ooo yes ~ possibility of wintry stuff!
Am I reading things right that from Wednesday morning for the north/Scotland but Thursday evening onwards for the rest of the country, things get a whole lot colder and there could be the possibility of snow showers/snow then as well?

fatsatsuma · 24/01/2015 10:40

Sorry Gloria - should have said that you are my other go-to MN weather guru! Nice to see you here too Smile

GloriaSmud · 24/01/2015 15:13

Aw, thank you fatsatsuma ~ I'm really only just beginning to learn how to read these weather charts! From what I can tell though, the possible wintry stuff for late this week and into next weekend, is still there in the 06z model run.

BlackeyedSusan · 25/01/2015 00:58

I am beginning to lose hope. there have been so many promises of snow and nothing has appeared here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2015 07:58

Don't lose heart yet! The northerly is still very much there in today's models for next weekend and through the first week of feb and it's a scenario that is more likely to bring wide spread snow than the previous weeks this winter of western warm air bumping into colder air that we've been having.

Ooh! I am officially doing a little snow dance OYBBK Grin

LumpySpacedPrincess · 25/01/2015 08:52

Crossing fingers in East Kent for next weekend.

I'm at the stage where I'm grumbling Scrooge style whenever there's a snow forecast, because it never falls here. (Hampshire) .
