Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

We're not far from manky (same city but the other side, I think) and did have a proper frost and ice on the cars this morning. It must have been cold overnight because our heating came on in the early hours.

Our couple of hours of heavy snow this evening have been downgraded to light snow and then sleet. Boo. Looks like it is warming up after that too.

Are the models suggesting the possibility of any further cold weather over the next couple of weeks?

MySweetPrince · 20/01/2015 09:53

Very cold here in Kent this morning and we now have our first snow flurry of the winter...:-)

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 20/01/2015 10:33

Not liking the look of our weather forecast for today and tomorrow... this is the village that is a little lower down than us Shock www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/gcmvfqnd0#?tab=fiveDay&fcTime=1421712000

'fergieweather' (who I think works at the metoffice) has posted on the netweather message board "Warnings re tonight-tomorrow will be issued this morning. Wales, Midlands and parts of N at greatest risk of disruptive snow." We'll see.

Here in Leicester, we've reached the dizzy heights of 1.1C!

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2015 11:04

And we have snow warnings!

FishyNibble · 20/01/2015 11:22

Newbiecrafter you must be near me, Radio Jackie is our local station too. I'm afraid that we have no chance of snow round here then, as I also bought brand new snow boots when we moved to the area 2 years ago (thinking now we're out in the sticks, I will need them) and it hasn't snowed properly since the day we bought the place. Grin

I've seen pictures online of a light dusting of snow in Epsom down the road, but here - nada. We're all at home with a virus at the moment, and a bit of snow watching would be perfect.

Ooo, they are such teases! Now I am right on the edge of the weather warning with light snow forecast for a couple of hours Confused

CatThiefKeith · 20/01/2015 12:21

Little flurry of snow about an hour ago in N Kent, and now blue skies again. Sad

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2015 12:37

soverylucky~ From some of the model runs and from what I gather from message boards, the models have struggled with this front coming in from the East. Some model runs a few days ago thought that this front would produce lots of snow and then on the next run, they thought it would begin to breakdown and not produce a lot or that it would be mostly sleet/rain.
So now nearer the time, the metoffice have probably got it about right but as snow is really difficult to forecast, this will probably change as we get nearer to tonight!

So for the moment, the metoffice say the higher bits in the warning zone ~ hills of Wales/the Peak District/the Penines could get 10-15cms but lower levels in those areas, 3-8cms.
There's just been a yellow warning given for some western areas/SW Scotland/Northern Ireland ~ ice looks to be more of a problem along with rain/sleet but could be a slight covering of snow over higher ground.

(As always, hope I've got some of the above right!)

Newbiecrafter · 20/01/2015 12:39

Hey fishy, snow in epsom?!!? Not fair! Seriously feel like having a tantrum!

Sorry to hear you're all down with a virus. No snow, but at least the sun is out which is cheery. Hope you're all feeling better soon.

Xxx

MsGee · 20/01/2015 12:49

OYBBK I am in North Herts and we originally had snow forecast for tmrw but now looking less likely (more of a snow / rain shower in the evening).

Is there any hope for snow - DD will be very disappointed if not Grin
I am guessing if you don't think it will get as far as Oxfordshire then it is not looking good for us here?

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2015 13:00

Looking at the posts here, looks like the front has just started coming in over the Bristol/South Wales area, so the forecast when it comes to timings is probably about right.

Waxlyrically · 20/01/2015 13:01

Oh dear not looking good for us on leics/Derbyshire border. Snow all night and most of tomorrow now - having been given false hope and downgraded to snow showers yesterday. I hate it and will gladly send it to anyone who wants it instead!

WhispersOfWickedness · 20/01/2015 13:56

Just nudge it a bit East to North Lincolnshire, Wax, thank you Grin

nannynick · 20/01/2015 14:04

Looks like it will miss Surrey. Just that bit too far south. Expect will just get rain, maybe sleet.

Waxlyrically · 20/01/2015 14:08

Poised and ready to administer sharp nudge eastwards!

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2015 14:40

The metoffice and BBC websites seems to think where we are (Leicester) will go between sleet and light snow overnight and into tomorrow. News24 and our local TV lunchtime forecasts have gone for light~heavy snow Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2015 14:43

Tomorrow looks borderline for many in the warning area with sleet or even rain for some and lots of snow for others. These fronts from the west are often tricky because they usually come on the edge of warmer air to the west of them and its that interaction bringing the snow/rain.

Ours has melted now, but am hoping for more!

JillJ72 · 20/01/2015 16:03

-8 on the shed this morning, it was ratherly cold (understatement) when sorting out my chickens' water which I'd left in a frost free zone last night but still had a layer of ice as so cold. Beautiful sunrise, it is now clouding over but no telling whether snow will fall or if we'll just be stuck with gloomy skies for 24 hours (I loathe gloomy winter skies)...

Namechangeyetagaintohide · 20/01/2015 16:14

I am very hopeful of snow here in yorkshire !

SwedeDreams · 20/01/2015 16:15

Possible snow for London has now disappeared. Very sad.Sad

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2015 16:36

Worcestershire calling. It is snowing big flakes and settling.
