Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

Holding onto hope for London snow! Even just a flake or two is fine by me... though a blizzard would be better.

hoochymama1 · 16/01/2015 09:52

Ooo, so exciting Grin
Hope you are able to get on with the rest of your life too, Kitten

GloriaSmud · 16/01/2015 10:15

The Metoffice have issued a 'Level 3 Cold Weather Alert' for some areas.
I'm focusing on this bit "There is also currently an uncertain risk of locally significant snowfall for parts of southeast England later on Sunday, and also for central parts of England on Tuesday. Please stay in touch with the weather forecast for latest developments."

Snow would be bad on Tuesday for us as it's DD1's last GCSE mock exam but it's also DD2's birthday and she would love snow on her birthday!

FishyNibble · 16/01/2015 11:15

Thank you kitten, another one here who logs on each morning to check your updates, I really appreciate it!

I am also keeping my fingers crossed for snow in London/Surrey on Sunday, DS keeps looking out of the window every morning with such hope on his face, it's very sweet. Monday is a different matter!

violetwellies · 16/01/2015 12:10

It's SNOWING GrinGrin

Newbiecrafter · 16/01/2015 12:28

Another one who us very grateful OYBBK. thanks so much!

Come on snow! You know you want to!

GloriaSmud, that cold weather alert, is that a new thing? I've never been aware of that before. Thanks for mentioning that.

OYBBK, does the cold weather alert make snow mire likely? Can it actually be too cold for snow?

Newbiecrafter · 16/01/2015 12:29

Is not us. Sorry.

nannynick · 16/01/2015 12:30

Oh no it isn't
Bright sun here in Surrey but was chilly in the playground.

Wonder if any snow will get to south or not over next few days.

violetwellies · 16/01/2015 12:32

Pah, it's stopped

WhispersOfWickedness · 16/01/2015 12:43

Grr, the snow gods do not like North Lincolnshire this winter Angry

MixenLane · 16/01/2015 13:26

Just started snowing here, not far from Congleton. I don't think it will stick, but will update later if it does!

LeftyLoony · 16/01/2015 13:41

UKMO says rain for Monday. Cheesed off.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/01/2015 14:04

thankfullly, we had snow at christmas so dd will not be competely disappointed with another year with no snow. not holding out much hope for snow here though. we are too far inland to catch it from any direction really.

GloriaSmud · 16/01/2015 14:10

Newbie ~ I can't remember when I first came across them (cold weather alerts) but I think the metoffice have done them for a few years.

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2015 15:06

Just wanted to come out of lurking to thank kitten too.

I often log on to see if there's any chance of snow, but I tend to do it silently to stop me throwing my toys out of the pram, when the answer is no Grin

East London/Essex border here.

pigsinmud · 16/01/2015 15:17

Thanks oybbk. School must think it's going to snow as just received a severe weather procedures letter!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/01/2015 15:20

Newbie, when people ask me about it being too cold to snow, I usually ask them to contemplate the state of the arctic Grin
The saying comes from the idea that often when it is very cold in the uk it is because we have a high pressure sat over us, keeping weather fronts at bay.

Cold weather alerts have been around for a while.

snow warnings for scotland but also tomorrow for Wales and much of the west and Midlands.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/01/2015 15:23

btw, those in the se don't lose hope entirely based on the warnings, I think its reasonably possible that those rain warnings will turn into snow for at least some.

My mil insists that it can be too cold to snow. We have always said er...look at Canada, Russia and then the Arctic! She still says it though.

Fingers crossed in Surrey for a little snow. We have sleet forecast at the moment.

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2015 16:56

I always thought the 'too cold to snow' thing was because it's normally colder when there is no cloud cover - and no cloud cover would mean no snow?

Newbiecrafter · 16/01/2015 17:00

Thanks Gloria and OYBBK Smile

I always thought it was odd when people said too cold for snow, as the arctic or Alaska is exactly what I would think of.

The high bringing cold makes more sense to my ickle brain.

Thanks again.

Come on Snow!

Perihelion · 16/01/2015 17:19

Trying not to get my hopes up after last week's pish excuse for a snow event in Edinburgh......but we are under a yellow warning for the weekend and it's been cold all day ( puddles in the shade haven't thawed )...soooooo all we need now is some hefty precipition and we'll be sledging Grin

Oh fuck, I'm getting excited again ***
