Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

It's felt
Rather dramatic in the highlands SSE sending in food vand when we we're without power. Peoples sheds literally jumping out their gardens into the road.
Has been good to see strangers pulling together. There was a post on facebook last night from people who had power back and a group got together collected flasks and went around the elderly in the surrounding villages checking on people. People offering spare beds for the night and hotels offering free showers and hot drinks and soup.
SSE have warned though that anymore winds and the power may just go again. Priority is obviously getting everyone back on safely then clear up all the mess properly.
Only one school near us was open on Friday but our head never shuts if he can at all avoid it.

We too have the "emergency telephone" and spent some part of the day dealing with a crisis in the property we rent in the capital where, amusingly, they "had no heating" - for which read, had turned the thermostat down and couldn't then work out why the temperature dropped.

But no sign of the frequently mentioned vans of food and hot water / drinks round here. Hope they did at least get to the vulnerable. 3 years ago we wer out for 3 days and it eventually means no water (local water needs power to be pumped up the hill once the reservoir is empty - or something). We even had the RedCross then and they did a lot of work on resilience and networks of support after a local lady was badly burned on a gas fire.

Weather remains absolutely appalling - huge rain and hail and high winds. More to follow? Oh shit!

met office warnings for mid week covering England and Scotland.
At present not looking as severe as the Scottish storms but happening in areas that are more prone to issues at lower speeds (due to building construction and the type of trees that tend to be more prevalent)

I'm afraid there are more gale warnings for those of you in Scotland tomorrow

Sorry.

Yes OYBBK I'm awake because of the wind already.

DearGirl · 12/01/2015 04:21

Am awake due to winds and wondering if cycling to work is a bad idea.

Ginfox · 12/01/2015 05:28

Really noisy winds just now.

We're on yellow alert, but all schools are closed today, and no buses until lunchtime. I think the council expected the warning to change to amber.

Still some areas without power, but we're all prepared for powercuts up here as they are v common, even in summer. Wouldn't be surprised if we lose it again today. Feel sorry for the engineers out trying to fix the lines in this.

due to extreme shortage of time I'm shoving all my discussion into this thread
normal service will resume later....

ok, back to this thread for discussion of what is going to happen next!

Sadly the chance of snow in the south on the Sunday has rescinded somewhat because the forecast low pressure develops further south than previous forecasts suggested. grrr. However, don't put those sledges away yet! Wales and perhaps some of the west Midlands could see some snow Saturday night.

Tusday looks interesting, some of the south may be too warm but from central southern England, up in to Wales and the Midlands both Tuesday and Wednesday look potentially rather snowy for some. Fun!

Thanks OYBBK Saturday is fine by me but all clear by Monday ideally. Smile

MixenLane · 15/01/2015 09:12

Tuesday is specifically the day I'd prefer it not to snow. Sad It's my niece's birthday and she lives just over the Pennines from me in the Peak District. I have serious anxiety about driving in snow/ice and there's no public transport.

GloriaSmud · 15/01/2015 11:11

Sorry Mixen ~ from my (very amateur) look, it's still looking snowy for Tuesday/Wednesday in the latest model run. I know the Peak District is not fun in snowy/icy weather Sad

leesmum · 15/01/2015 11:19

Thanks Kitten....so is there a teeny chance of snow for Mcr then? Smile

mankyscotslass · 15/01/2015 13:25

Snow dance!

Justmuddlingalong · 15/01/2015 13:29

Snow? Where? Got gloomy sky and high winds here in Fife.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2015 14:35

yes leesmum :)

Thanks Gloria, I'll have to offer my niece an additional birthday party at a later date if the weather's awful !

digerd · 15/01/2015 15:08

SE.
In the early hours this morning we had wind, rain and then thunder. At dawn the sky cleared and has been sunny but chilly and gusty at times.
7 degrees.

pinkkoala · 15/01/2015 21:16

I saw on bbc weather website that northampton has snow flake for saturday, sunday and tuesday, I am turning to OYBBK for her knowledge as to whetherwe are liklikely to get some snow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2015 21:57

I'll do an update in the morning :) I just stopped working five minutes ago and I'm cream crackered.

caz1010 · 16/01/2015 07:45

Morning.
One of the first things I do on the morning is check your reports.

Thank you for everything you do. I hope you realise how much people appreciate it Thanks

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/01/2015 07:54

Remember snow in this country is the hardest thing to forecast. Not only do you need to get the position of the weather fronts correct, but you also need accurate upper air temps, dew points and of course temps at ground level. A temp swing of just 1 or 2c can wash away any hope. So please take snow forecasts with a huge pinch of salt unless I say that it really does look pretty certain!

Today - snow spreading across much of Scotland, at times heavy.

Tomorrow - scattered sleet and snow showers across much of the uk, rain showers in the south. North Wales may see some heavier snow for a time.

Sunday - such a tease! Temps borderline, so it looks like heavy rain for some in the south, and snow for others. Higher ground is more likely to see it as snow as is the northern edge of the precipitation band, but where that will be is anyone's guess - prime spot currently is the southern midlands.

Monday - first thing may see some snow in the SE as the back edge of precip band moves south east.

Tuesday - getting into the highly uncertain range but could see some more snow.
