Boxing Day snow thread

From storm thread which talked about the complexities of tomorrow's weather:

"Merry Christmas will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise."

And With regards to discussion about NI: "it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos."

I don't think things have changed since my thoughts earlier today.

We are now under the snow warning! I am so happy, even though it probably won't happen.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 12:23

Those are the parameters I use, they are pretty good, but don't really factor in evaporative cooling.

Thanks Kitten ...watching with interest and hoping for snow in Manchester Xmas Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 12:40

Apparently snow is settling over higher ground in the Brecon Beacons.

Thanks kitten ! I do hope so !

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 12:59

namechange - unlikely to be the whole of the midlands though.

Ok, thank you OYBBK Smile
I was mostly thinking out loud that if the rain we are forecast does turn into snow, it might not stick anyway Sad

Namechangeyetagaintohide · 26/12/2014 13:10

I'm near Cannock and later Dudley way. Any nice white stuff for me ?

overthebliddyhill · 26/12/2014 13:14

We have to drive N Yorks to Cambridge tomorrow.....what do you think Kitten, do we need a shovel?

GloriaSmud · 26/12/2014 13:16

Think our temperature's beginning to wobble a bit ~ we had a high of 4.6C an hour ago and it's now 4.3C.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 13:18

I'm afraid that unless you live on higher ground then I can't say with any certainty which areas will get snow. If the met office warnings go amber we will have a better idea.

Over, I would plan for it to be a challenging journey.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 13:24

My temp seems to have stabilised at 3c, but as the rain arrives it may well go up again as the warm sector goes through.

met office warnings now include snow for much of Scotland from an entirely separate system. What a complicated situation - sorry Scotland for being behind the curve on this one.

Wondering whether my journey from Preston to London and the onwards to Kent will be affected on Monday. Already been delayed due to eng works!!

TheWoollybacksWife · 26/12/2014 13:32

Way ahead of you Gary Grin

DH still in denial though. I've been out for milk and fresh fruit and planning to bunker down for the duration. I got sheepskin slippers and a gorgeous chunky sofa throw from DH yesterday and a box of my favourite chocolate mints from DD2. If I could only wrestle the remote control from DH and DS I would be grand.

OYBBK you do a great job Flowers I hope Santa was good to you too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 13:43

He was TWBW Xmas Smile . In fact I'm going to go and settle in front of the fire with my new Stephen King!

Makemejump, I'm not expecting anything in the way of snow after tonight/early tomorrow through to Monday, unless we get some snow streamers down the west. But it looks like temps will struggle to get above 0 for many tomorrow and Sunday.

ooh hope that doesn't change oybbk! I'll be watching this thread.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2014 13:49

It has gone very dark here in Worcestershire. I have got to drive over to a friend's at 5pm to walk her dog. Bit worried.

Hulababy · 26/12/2014 13:54

I'm in Sheffield. Sky is very white here but no sign of snow as yet.

I'm really hoping it stays away - or at least stays away til late tonight or early hours. We have family coming over and don't want them to all have to rudh away early due to the weather.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/12/2014 14:04

Suffolk. Cloudy but bright. Dc's are expecting snow. Local forecast just says heavy rain. Hmm

CaulkheadUpNorth · 26/12/2014 14:07

In Birmingham and it's sleeting.

TheFourthLobster · 26/12/2014 14:10

Very white skies here and a bit of sleet. We're not far from Sparklingbrook - I think; we're on the motorway (no, I'm not driving!)

mankyscotslass · 26/12/2014 14:16

Grey skies here in Manchester - dry st the moment though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 14:33

rain has started where I am at a temp of 4c. No change to the warnings though - I suspect the met office will do a bit of a 'nowcast' with the ambers.

I have asked mn to put this on discussions of the day to give a heads up to anyone avidly avoiding the news.
