Boxing Day snow thread

From storm thread which talked about the complexities of tomorrow's weather:

"Merry Christmas will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise."

And With regards to discussion about NI: "it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos."

I don't think things have changed since my thoughts earlier today.

Onestep. What time is he leaving? If he is going to be travelling after mid afternoon then yes, it would be really sensible.
I have no idea what Boxing Day traffic is like.

Well, hes still in Bed nursing the gains of yesterday, I think he was planning to leave about lunchtime. I`ll have a word, maybe ring my sister in Sheffield as well.

Thanks Kitten I love your threads.

TheFourthLobster · 26/12/2014 10:22

Hmm, not looking forward to being on the roads today then. Flask, sandwiches and blanket packed.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 10:25

Ahh, hangover versus possibly interesting drive. Tricky balance!

OneStepCloser · 26/12/2014 10:27

No, more overeating, not much alcohol consumed in this house, one glass of bubbly and we all tipsy!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 10:28

Just a quick reminder, amateur forecaster, don't rely on me for decision that may impact safety - met office are the ones to rely on for important decisions etc. etc.
traffic england may be useful and they have an app you can download before hand.

Hi Kitten, always love your snow threads.
South essex are we in luck for later? Met app saying rain for us but warning for snow. Confused.

TheFourthLobster · 26/12/2014 10:30

I don't know about others, but I use your messages as a prompt to check elsewhere - like the met office/BBC. It's useful so thank you :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 10:35

To refine the east Kent question, I think if any snow forms it will be very late.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 10:39

JKS, potentially. It will be mid to late evening once the centre of the low pressure is south of you.

I guess my main message to reiterate is the uncertainty of this and that when the heavy rain starts you may think you are in the clear, but for some this heavy rain will turn to snow.
I'd also like to reiterate the ice risk for tomorrow morning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 10:39

TFL, that is really reassuring :) that's the sensible way to take my threads.

Thank you Ohbbk.
For those asking about extra bits in case of getting stuck for travellors, if you have any doubt and can, do. Better to have bits you don't need than bits you do.
Based on those timings I should manage one traverse across the hills before the snow is due to hit. Am rather worried about tomo. But I guess we will have to see what happens wrt that tomo as it is too early to tell and as Brilliant as you are, I think you are beyond miracles and fortune predicting WinkGrin
Hope you had a good christmas and as ever your weather advice and heads up is very much appreciated.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 10:46

I am so glad that you are realistic about my inability to fortune tell Bitchy Xmas Grin if the met office with their hundreds of staff and supercomputers are being challenged by this system then me peering at the models on my ipad is certainly going to have a hard time of it.

So I am erring on the side of caution. I'd much rather everyone was grumpy with me because they got home and all there was was rain, than you all got stuck on the motorway because I said that you could be ok.

Ok, time to move my lazy bum and get dressed and have some breakfast!

I will unashamedly keep this bumped today - if people didn't watch the news yesterday and are traveling later today they could be in for a bit of a shock.

Anything for the midlands kitten ?

WhispersOfWickedness · 26/12/2014 11:21

If it rains heavily first, it would then have to snow quite heavily to 'stick', wouldn't it? Because the first snow to fall would melt faster falling onto moving warmer rain than a very cold dry ground?

EdithWeston · 26/12/2014 11:29

I'm meant to be travelling tomorrow, and can't make out from the forecasts if we're likely to get snow or rain.

(will be watching this thread, as well as forecast sites, for updates for Leicestershire and routes south from there)

OnTheThursdayOfChristmas · 26/12/2014 11:31

Oh living in Cornwall is so ^boring* weatherwise

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 26/12/2014 11:39

Considering the brakes are useless on the hill with this ice and snow incident I had earlier this month, I'd happily take boring weather OntheThursday

Right just packing the car with snow suits, hand warmers, porridge pots and a thermos. Sods law says I don't need them but I don't care and would rather have them in case. Might have tweaked the journey times forward a bit based on the earlier timings though. Fingers crossed there is no getting stuck on the arse end of no where in the middle of the hills roads. motorways would be a luxury Xmas Grin

MsBug · 26/12/2014 11:44

Ooh just seen this thread. Currently driving from Sussex to London (I should say dp is driving, I'm not mning and driving Xmas Grin). The weather is cloudy and cold.

We're staying the night and driving back tomorrow so don't really want heavy snowfall tonight!

GaryBaldy · 26/12/2014 11:54

WollyBack Pitsford says snow!!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 12:11

Namechange - yes.

Sorry, was sorting out playstation issues. dd was getting rather frustrated but now we've established its another DDOS attack on Sony and that gamers seem to be collateral damage, I can come back to weather.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/12/2014 12:12

whispers - yes, but in the scenario that looks likely this will be what will happen in some places.

Some interesting reading here on some of the ingredients needed for snow and the forecasting of it.
