Weather warnings for saturday

from the met office

They are very broad based at the moment because as is ever with thunderstorms, you can have all the right conditions for them but actually predicting whether and where they will trigger is a big challenge.

Warning is for torrential rain as a result of thunderstorms which may also bring hail and strong wind.

Bloody hell. The cat and I nearly hit the ceiling. That was a very loud crack of thunder. Never had such a long storm. Chucking it down, thunder, lightening, my other cat still awol and my car lights are all flashing. Does that mean it has been struck? Confused.

Taffeta · 18/07/2014 21:57

We had a very exciting display of simultaneous fork and sheet lightning here in Kent half an hour ago. Children very, very excited. Just rumbly thunder and rain now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2014 21:59

Perhaps Stratters.

Itsfab, probably not, both thunder and also the generally 'electric atmosphere' (not very technically put!) can set off car alarms and also other electrics. Hope your other cat turns up soon!

Thunder, rain and very stong gusts of wind in Mid essex.... Wind picked up the paddling pool and flung it at patio doors. Scared the life out of me. Have now, for some reason dragged it into the kitchen.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2014 22:07

It's a reasonable temporary solution papyrus! Not surprised it gave you a fright!

More developments in France. The question is will they take a more directly northerly track or will they swing north east following the first storm? I do not know!!!

dawndonnaagain · 18/07/2014 22:13

I'm almost as far east as you can get, and only up the road from Latitude. I'm following it and keeping my fingers crossed. Sorry for the folk at Latitude, but we neeeeeeeed a storm! Grin

Papyrus02 · 18/07/2014 22:13

The wind has died down now so not sure my efforts to save the paddling pool were necessary!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2014 22:17

But it was very courageous!

Suffolk/Essex/Cambridgeshire borders have had lightening for a bit (spectacular flashes, mostly in East Suffolk & down in Essex -- we're monitoring the flashes) and we just had a long, deep thunder rumble. It's raining but not the heaviest rain I've ever seen.

Got SmallBoy's (homemade) rain gauge reset just in time. I just hope it doesn't get blown away as the wind picks up.

Papyrus02 · 18/07/2014 22:40

Thunder made our house shake, car alarms went off.

It also got people who live opposite our house arguing. They've shut door now, but I can still hear them.

Rain not too heavy.

JillJ72 · 18/07/2014 22:41

North Bucks. Storm bubbled up in Oxford and headed our way. Little bit of rain, little bit of thunder, lots and lots of lightning. Now over Northampton way. Can hear another one moving up from south towards us.

Sleeping with the light on - I'm not hugely fond of the unpredictability of lightning.

Blondieminx · 18/07/2014 22:45

EPIC lightning happening in North Essex and v heavy rain...

MiscellaneousAssortment · 18/07/2014 22:48

I was so excited when we had some fabulous sheet lightening and thunder last night, but it didn't help much with the air and today was revoltingly muggy and sweaty.

I hope it all happens tonight properly. And in west London!

Though also hoping no major problems, particularly in more vulnerable areas x

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2014 22:49

There does seem to be bits and pieces bubbling up. the Essex stuff will be the ex-Kent stuff :)

Nothing where I am (central southern England)

rusty What's the storm watching website you've screenshotted (is that a word) ?

I'm waiting to see if anything brews in Hampshire. Maybe we'll just get the rain.

ready4anotherdecaffcoffee · 18/07/2014 23:02

Central bucks very close and still. Pitch black outside. What are the chances of a storm tomorrow afternoon? Supposed to be playing outside at a fete (brass band!)

RustyBear · 18/07/2014 23:16

www.lightningmaps.org/realtime?lang=en

I have it bookmarked on my iPad, very interesting to follow the storms.

OYBBK- The other one in France seems to have moved from just south of La Rochelle through Poitiers to LeMans - north and a bit east. If it stayed on that track it would pretty much follow the first one - is it likely to do that?

KentOwl · 18/07/2014 23:20

Dying down here in mid Kent now. Was v exciting - but rather scary - it felt like the lightening was in our living room and the rushing wind was so ominous! I'm pleased about rain in my water butt. Garden needs it so much. DCs slept right through it all though, goodness knows how.

pigleychez · 18/07/2014 23:27

Kent here too and agree is was a meaty storm! The lightning was amazing (if not alittle scary). It came over so quickly and it got dark very quickly. The wind seemed to come from nowhere! Dh and I had put a gazebo up for dd's party tomorrow but had to run out and take it down! Even though it had been pinned down the wind was really strong and lifting it. Thankfully both girls have slept through blissfully unawareGrin Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2014 23:30

RB sadly it could. Which may well take a lot of energy out of it. Will do a final scout before bed.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2014 23:33

Really enjoying the reports :)

RB it may come more central. Quite promising.... :)

Sadly hasnt cleared the air here in Kent. I have just finished icing Dd's birthday cake and it was a nightmare! The icing was just sliding right off! Hope it least stays dry tomorrow as im cringing at the thought of 20 children trashing my house! Hoping to have the party outside

thornrose · 18/07/2014 23:50

I'm West Sussex coast, we had thunder and lightning at 8pm for about half an hour with a bit of rain. Nothing since then, it's quiet and calm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2014 23:50

Hop you can get some sleep to night pigley in anticipation.

I have moderate rain here, nothing electrical but am going to sleep now. Might 'see' some of you in the night.
