Weather warnings for saturday

from the met office

They are very broad based at the moment because as is ever with thunderstorms, you can have all the right conditions for them but actually predicting whether and where they will trigger is a big challenge.

Warning is for torrential rain as a result of thunderstorms which may also bring hail and strong wind.

The lights were almost as fascinating as the lightning Ohyou, just waiting to see if they still work when it gets dark tonight!

dawndonnaagain · 19/07/2014 12:14

Please may I show off a minute.
My dd took this at four o' clock this morning. DS sent it into the beeb and it was on Breakfast this morning!

Very cool pic, dawndonna's ds. We had storms around that time too - perhaps that was the same lightning strike I saw.

Another thunderstorm just spent 3 rumbly hours passing to the east of us and seems to be easing off now, but the lightning map shows a big cluster heading up from the Channel Islands, so perhaps we'll see that later.

My AWOL cat turned up very soggy and with stuff stuck in him so I towel dried him and sorted him out.

Scary lightening in the night and in Sittingbourne a house was struck and set on fire. Thank goodness not the house my daughter was sleeping in.

Had heavy rain this morning but all is calm at the moment and my roses survived the onslaught.

CatsCantTwerk · 19/07/2014 12:32

Still no sign of rain/storms in Lincoln, Which is good for my ds and cub camp but not so good for my headache.

I didn't know about the tornados OYBBK, Thanks, Thats really interesting to know.

oldsilver · 19/07/2014 12:42

It's all gone dark and rumbly again. I am meant to be getting a kip in too much storm watching I am actually on a night out tonight - hasn't happened since, oh my goodness, a year now Shock

Mckayz · 19/07/2014 12:46

Still nothing here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 12:52

That's very cool Dawn :) ItsFab, I'm glad your cat is back.

Still a risk for some severe thunderstorms initiating this afternoon and into the evening but we need the clouds to clear and the heat to get going.

I'm very torn with what to wish for because one the one hand I love a big storm and I really would like one very much, but on the other hand a Saturday afternoon is not the best timing for most people!

We are on discussions of the day - cool :) but mn I preferred your other title to the thread!

Another storm is crossing the channel - heading West Sussex way. It's possible that all of these smaller storms are going to stop really big ones from forming.

I can see it, I think, OYBBK - am looking west to the Downs by Beachy Head (about 6 miles away) & it is getting darker & darker over there. Still sunny here but gusty wind every so often.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 13:13

updated met office warnings they expire just before midnight tonight. Amber area covers most of England (just not the east west sticky out bits]]

For those out and about on phones they say:
"Areas of heavy, thundery showers will continue to move northwards across England and Wales today. Not everywhere within the warning area will see thunderstorms, and indeed some spells of warm sunshine are expected at times. However, where thunderstorms do form, some torrential downpours are likely with frequent lightning, large hail and locally strong gusts. Significant flooding is possible where these do occur from surface water as well as from small, fast-responding watercourses. "

Magi, can you see any structure to the storm yet? Some of the pictures taken of yesterday's storm in Kent are truely awe inspiring.

magimedi · 19/07/2014 13:15

In the five minutes since I last posted the storm seems to have either pushed north or just disappated (sp?) - gone quite bright over ther enow.

I love weather!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 13:19

It might have been killed off by the channel or perhaps slid to the side of you.

Very muted torro convective discussion.

Sunny here, time for my chickens to have a run around! N Bucks

JerseySpud · 19/07/2014 13:27

Well i went for my hack and there was nothing major just a couple of rumblings in the distance.

Its still muggy as hell here so im wondering if there will be more in later

tenderbuttons · 19/07/2014 13:42

We've had storm after storm here in East Somerset. At night, at 7am, all morning. That last one is just moving away now, but I think there is another one just south of us too...

seasidesally · 19/07/2014 13:47

east dorset right on the coast has been rubbish

ShineSmile · 19/07/2014 13:51

Do the met warnings mean all is clear after midnight? I can travel tomorrow morning? Smile

pigsinmud · 19/07/2014 14:20

Had nothing in my bit of Surrey. Rather disappointed.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 14:23

Shine away from the eastern side looks pretty good tomorrow, more later. Strong sunshine in a fair few places now - signs for homegrown stuff?

No wonder we're all rather warm - 25c outside, 28c inside. DH is heat gun stripping gloss paint from woodwork. I'm out with the chickens, def the right place to be. I'll be eggshelling the woodwork later so will get my dues....

FeministStar · 19/07/2014 15:26

Manhoosive (which the iPad wanted to change to manhood ice....could be amusing MN name for under bridge dwellers) thunder storm overheard here, have taken the DCs swimming and can hear it even inside, the lights are flickering like crazy so not sure how long it will be before they have to evacuate the pool in the dark!
