Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

I have a friend who is planning on travelling up the N Wales coast tonight, I suggested she might call it off due to the weather, she says she's happy to try.... should I urge her not to?

Don't want to come across as dramatic!

Felix90 · 12/02/2014 14:46

I'm feeling very lucky that it's not too bad in Leeds after reading this thread. There's a massive junction in the city which is closing at 4pm due to the wind. We had a power cut last night and there's been more across the city today.

Hope everyone stays safe! It all sounds very scary!

meglet · 12/02/2014 14:53

All quiet in north hampshire Confused.

flootshoot · 12/02/2014 15:08

Been chucking down in Staines for ages, just had sudden downpour of hailstones. Feel slightly sorry for the BBC reporter currently huddled on the riverbank.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 15:13

The west coast mainline is being closed at 7pm.

Gladits having been out on the roads until about an hour ago I would try and get her to postpone. There is a LOT of debris on the roads and a lot of trees down, tiles are flying off roofs and that's not going to improve!

I don't like this. I am ready for everything, the schools all very sensibly closed (DS1 said the school had two options, send them all home immediately or keep them until after 9pm, I am so glad they took the send them all home route.) Got torches, got candles, just have to sit and wait, uh oh, electricity going on and off, see you later, I hope!

LIZS · 12/02/2014 15:17

Good luck to those having to travel through it . Seems to be easing a bit here (SE). Next door's gate has just come off its hinges and fallen into one of our fence panels, splitting it . Easily into double figures of panels to replace now :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 15:18

All schools in Pembrokshire are closed.

They should have done it before.

I'm leaving to pick up dc's - Going to need a pampers on to drive in this.

canutesauntie · 12/02/2014 15:28

The wind coming up the Severn has let up a bit now so the electric has stopped flickering for now - thanks for the reminders to fill flasks and charge things everyone. There are several roads being closed locally after this mornings rain and the Wye is over its banks from Ross down to Monmouth in loads of places. My Facebook feed has pictures of the bridge at Monmouth with the water above the arches and so much debris!
Worried about friends down in West Wales. One lives just up the coast from Aberystwyth alongside the beach and they have already had several batterings since Christmas!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 15:29

take care threebats.

I would stay away from crossing the Pennines this evening - blizzard conditions look likely.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2014 15:34

Oooooo Its just picked up here again too.

lizzylocket · 12/02/2014 15:47

93.6 mph winds recorded on the Cleddau Bridge in Pembs. Is it going to get any worse OYBBK?

flootshoot · 12/02/2014 15:47

Blue sky here now, very calm and still. Am I in the eye of it?!

MorvahRising · 12/02/2014 15:49

Gone all quiet here too now, luckily just in time for the school run!

MehQueen · 12/02/2014 15:51

We experienced the same interval of calm for about 45 minutes but now the storm is back with a vengeance. :(

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2014 15:57

Whats your local windspeed and gust speed?

www.windfinder.com/weather-maps/report/unitedkingdom#5/55.379/-3.428

Apparently gusting up to 49mph round here but that was a couple of hours ago and it seems worst now. We seem to be getting of lightly compared to other parts though.

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 15:58

It had died down to general strong winds here, but just blasting again now in NW Wales.

Is it likely to get worse OYBBK, or is this the full force of the storm?

Electric is flickering...

chocolateshoes · 12/02/2014 16:01

Lancashire Cumbria border here. Some big gusts. Should be taking ds to jujitsu later but thinking of cancelling tonight. Is it going to get worse do you think?

rallytog1 · 12/02/2014 16:06

West Cheshire still not too bad - winds are strong and gusty but nothing worse than we've seen in the last few weeks. Hope that doesn't mean it's saving itself up for rush hour.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/02/2014 16:06

Is it going to get worse do you think?
yes - there is a [http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/nw/nw_forecast_warnings.html?day=1 RED]] wind warning over parts of wales and NW England for later on this evening. DH was going to a meeting in Manchester, he's decided against it, and we're going to chuck DD out of her bedroom at the rear of the house till its passed as there are some tall trees which are due to be removed because they've been deemed unsafe... but the weather hasn't been good enough for them to get the job done. And the wind is coming from precisely the wrong direction from our POV.

Just been outside to turn the garden table over as its less likely to get blown around that way.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2014 16:09

Its forecast to be worst round Manchester about 9pm, but it looks like its going to be nearly as bad from now until then anyway.

pinklady1107 · 12/02/2014 16:11

Dartford bridge in south east closed - no where as bad as some have it but its pretty bad and my kitten has not come home yet Sad

Hope everyone stays safe xx
