Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

My main concern is western Wales where gusts still look like they could reach 90mph by mid afternoon along the coast, 70-80mph a little further inland. really seem to get going lunch time on, an d will ease slowly this evening. That very strong swathe of winds will reach the peak district late afternoon with winds gusting 60-70mph, perhaps higher on the odd exposed hill top. Looking pretty rough around the isle of Man tonight.

The south coast is looking at gusts of 60mph-70mph, affecting the dover area from late morning onwards.

Widespread gusts of 40-50mph elsewhere, 60mph close to the amber areas (though much of Scotland is positively calm)

Maybe a little more snow this morning for parts of the north. Also, hail showers thrown in here and there.

Rain is going to move rapidly in to cover the whole of England and Wales by lunchtime. Some snow in central scotland.

Southern england could see around 15mm of rain perhaps more in parts of the SW and southern Wales. Parts of western scotland could see 25mm today into tomorrow.

I am phoning the boys bus company this morning to ask about their bad weather policy. The school is very rural and the majority of children are bussed in from all over the county so snow days are dictated by whether the buses can run safely. Don't know what they do about gusts of 90mph on exposed hilltops by the sea. Got a plan with the boys and a 4x4 so I will drive in and get them if it looks too bad.

My dd is travelling from London to the Isle of Sheppey today to do a 'fun run'. Apart from getting soaked to the skin, ( I've persuaded her to take as many warm clothes as you can for a teenager), I'm worried about the journey too.

Please tell me that the east aren't getting the blasting as much as the other half of the country?

lostinwales Pembrokeshire, right? Batten down this afternoon - it usually misses us in Swansea when it goes up the West coast like its predicted to. I mean, we get wind yes but you get turbo charged wind so take care today. I would be tempted to pull kids out of school, not as an over reaction to it but because I wanted us all home and dry indoors with snacks and books and so on to just bunker down and ride it all out, like a weekend in the middle of the week - but then I am a feckless parent who takes any opportunity at all to bunk off from daily life and slob - you've no idea how much I covert days where I do not have to shower, do hair and get dressed...

dingit it wont be pleasant, by mid afternoon it could be gusting up to around 50-60mph for a little while. The only thing that would concern me about the journey is delays due to flooding on the track. Check out the national rail link above or your local train company website.

Julia, take it very very easy. Check out the traffic england reports and be aware that there is likely to be flooding on some of the roads. It depends where you are coming from but you should be ok (unless you are coming from an amber area, in which case go soon!)

I tend to agree with threebats. If I lived where you do lost I would be keeping my dd home and I dont think I've ever done that for weather. (I have once insisted she stays indoors as her old school was surrounded by trees!). Worst thing that happens is that I'm totally wrong and we both feel rather silly!

Viva - details still arent fully firmed up on the storm, but personally I'd consider rescheduling to the sunday if you can. Wait though, for the next model runs!

Thanks Kitten. She's going by minibus, and for once I'm grateful for a teen who has a phone surgically attached to her hand, as she can text me when she gets there, and when she's on the way home. She's likely to crawl round the M25 anyway because of the ever going roadworks.
