Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

kitten Its quite scary here in Swansea and lost is getting it worse than we are I suppose given where she is? We have not had this wind speed here for donkeys... My electric is going bonkers, on and off and on again. I am getting flasks filled as I type. I have to go get kids at 4-5pm... I am afraid to drive actually and I'm a hard arse normally.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2014 14:15

stars, BBC travel has only just said the M6 Thelwall viaduct has restrictions on it in the last 20mins (centre of warrington sounds screwed already as usual when its windy like this). If anything the wind seems to have eased up in the last hour too.

It is bad, but I have seen it a lot worse in the past. Warrington and Cheshire have a amber rather than a red warning and it improves as you go south.

Merseyside does have a red warning, but if he's coming from Liverpool along the M62 I think he would be ok. The M62 between St Helens and Warrington doesn't have a warning on at the moment, and thats a usual black spot for the wind.

I think he's liable to have more problems with the traffic than the conditions as such if I'm honest. Going in rush hour as a HGV driver sounds much more preferable to going in the early hours in high winds.

Sure he'll be fine.

Theres a buoy in the Irish sea that has sustained 78mph and gusts to 110mph. Now that wont translate to the same wind speeds as it hits Wales but it gives you an idea of how dangerous this storm is. It is the same strength of a category 1 hurricane.

I just opened the door to a delivery driver and it swung open so fast it nearly took me with it! Really dreading going out in a bit. I hope everyone is ok it must be really scary in the red

starsandunicorns · 12/02/2014 14:17

Dp has left liverpool 10-15 mins ago he texted when wagon getting loaded then down to bristol and back up to warrington finish time midnight he says he not got a curtain wagon thank for small merceys

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 14:18

I agree that it is better to be travelling during rush hour than at speed in this weather. If he is leaving soon then he should be away from the worst of it.

Wind has picked up considerably in North West Wales. Some scarily strong gusts.

I've moved my car to the lee side of the house (although thinking about it, that's probably where the roof tiles would land...), moved garden furniture into shelter...

We have a flimsy old corrugated iron shed that suffered a lot in the last storms, lost a door. I wonder if the roof might go this time?

Phoned my Dad - he has lost power. But I'm nearer the coast than he is, so I think it's worse here, but more trees where he is I guess.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 14:19

Good :) He is getting away before the really strong stuff hits. by 9pm it should be much calmer and easier for him.

the wind and rain have stopped, has the storm passed,Dorset

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 14:28

Amazing how little warning there has been in the media for this - they're all over it now, but it's a little too late.

I'm usually quite aware of the weather, but I had no idea it was predicted to get this bad today.

Just called DP, who is making deliveries across North West Wales today, and he didn't know it was forecast to get worse. He said "Oh i'd better pull the flags in from the forecourt then"... errrr yes, if they're still there!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 14:31

TORRO have issued a tornado watch.

All home, all safe, just filling bath, getting candles and charging every thing that needs charge. Thank you OYBBK because I was the only person I know goint, 'it's going to be windy, VERY windy, maybe we should think about how best to deal with this'. Anyway, back in a bit when we are sorted. If the electricity stays!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 14:33

I think the media have been negligent over this. We knew it was going to get this bad certainly yesterday and there has been some indication for a few days (its on the part 2 warnings thread). People really need to know in advance, especially in being able to prepare for power loss and travel.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 14:34

Thank goodness Lost :) I was beginning to get a little concerned. I hope your power stays.

The Clifton suspension bridge is closed til further notice.

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 14:38

Flask filled, mobile charged, garden furniture moved.

Anything else I should consider?

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 14:39

Speed restrictions on the Anglesey bridges, and closed to high sided vehicles - but that's nothing unusual.

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 14:41

My main work office is closing at 3pm, they're worried that the anglesey bridges are going to close.

magimedi · 12/02/2014 14:41

Get some drinking water stored & maybe fill the bath, for loo flushing?? Just in case your water goes off. Don't know how likely that is.

Hope you are all OK - we have a gale (East Sussex) but not that bad.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 14:42

Insurance documents should be in a place you can find easily, heating on. I wouldnt be doing anything like going into the loft now if the wind is really up.

Best1sWest · 12/02/2014 14:43

Cripes, the M4 Britton Ferry bridge near Swansea is closed too. I haven't know that to close before due to wind but a truck blew over on it at the weekend. There'll be chaos on the roads.

Best1sWest · 12/02/2014 14:45

So glad I have't done my usual commute to Cardiff today even if it is because of d&v
