Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

The wind has really got up now in Manchester.

I've just heard that they've closed the Thelwall Viaduct on the M6 in both directions and are probably going to have to close Barton Bridge on the M60. The rush hour commute is going to be chaos tonight...

ToffeeWhirl · 12/02/2014 16:13

Am in East Sussex. The school run was scary today. I don't think I've ever had to walk in such strong wind and rain before. I wondered if we should shelter in the school before going home, but everyone was going out in it, so (like a sheep Blush) I followed, but kept an eye out for flying debris and falling fences on the way.

According to a website I found, that wind was only about 27mph. Frankly, it was scary enough. Can't even begin to imagine how scary it would be to be in a wind of up to 100mph.

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 16:20

It's scary here in NW Wales now. Thankfully my friend has cancelled her plans to travel.

Watching my garage roof flapping up and down, I think we might lose it.

MehQueen · 12/02/2014 16:25

Its forecast to be worst round Manchester about 9pm, but it looks like its going to be nearly as bad from now until then anyway.

Red - I dread to think of it getting much worse than it is now.

kippersmum · 12/02/2014 16:28

Getting pretty wild now in the IOM, we are not on the met office red warning but our local met office has issued a red warning for wind. I'm debating whether to take DD1 to cubs... everything apart from cuns appears to have been cancelled

ToffeeWhirl · 12/02/2014 16:30

I'd give it a miss, kipper. Better safe than sorry.

JillJ72 · 12/02/2014 16:33

I think a sensible option would be to do cub things at home - makeshift camp, hot choc and games. Not venture out.

North Bucks. Into Northants today, blowing a hoolie and lashing down on drive back to north Bucks at lunchtime. We either have bright or stormy skies scudding across, and windy gusts howling down the chimneys. Wind was howling through work windows today, that's a first.

GladitsnotJustMe · 12/02/2014 16:33

Getting worse. Neighbour's shed roof is flapping around like a flag.

Just re-secured garden furniture and gates. Neighbour's Wheelie bins and recycling bins scattered down the road. Mine are secure.

Lorry down on one of the Anglesey bridges, so it's closed. Lots of minor roads closed due to trees down.

There's a huge old oak tree overhanging my house which scares the hell out of me. If it comes down it's bringing our telephone line with it, and will hit the house. I'm keeping a close eye on it.

SlowlorisIncognito · 12/02/2014 16:35

I'm in SE cornwall at the moment and the worst wind seems to have stopped, fortunately. It was really scary earlier, so hope all are ok where it is even worse. Will the wind pick up again later?

I'm just posting because a lot of trees have come down on roads today, so it's probably a good idea to check before travelling. There's also been a couple of serious accidents possibly due to the weather- In particular I think people may have problems travelling from the tamar bridge towards trerulefoot roundabout. I believe at the moment large sections of the A38 have been closed due to an accident and an (unrelated) fallen tree in the area.

Also apparently lots of trees fallen onto roads in Devon too.

I would guess that there are trees down in other places too- On Saturday there was a tree down on the A38 which I didn't see reported on anywhere although I think it was moved quite quickly.

I really hope no-one has been seriously hurt/injured and everyone manages to stay safe.

embouchure · 12/02/2014 16:39

Very quiet here in Surrey. Heavy rain earlier and a bit gusty, but all quiet really.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/02/2014 16:42

w mids it is windy, but not the worst it has been. we had a squall just at the wrong moment. we managed to shelter under the canopy though before popping round to the door to collect ds and got back to the car in relative dryness. we were treated to the most spectacular double rainbow and a veiw of the retreating cloud with anvil and bubbly underside of anvil. even ds said the cloud was black so it must have been very dark grey.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 16:42

sorry, guys, I'm in between work clients at the moment, so not much time to post. Those of you in Wales are in the worst of it I think at the moment until around 6pm, maybe a bit longer. those in the east of the red warning, should be over the worst by about 9pm.

slowloris, you should be over the worse now.

AmberLeaf · 12/02/2014 16:43

Was really blowy at around 2-3pm, much calmer now. [SE London]

Lots of wheelie bins that had been blown over when I did the school run.

Happiestinwellybobs · 12/02/2014 16:43

Scary in Lancashire. Fence panels down in our garden, and I have sent DH out to collect DD from nursery. Lots of big trees near us, but not near our house fortunately.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 16:43

toffee - that was probably mean wind speed, you'd have been gusting 50-60mph I'd have thought.

OP posts:
HumphreyCobbler · 12/02/2014 16:44

just realised half the greenhouse panels are gone

BlackeyedSusan · 12/02/2014 16:46

there are a few trees down round here too and we are nowhere near the worst of it.

SlowlorisIncognito · 12/02/2014 16:46

OYBBK Glad we are over the worst. Fingers crossed everyone else is ok too.

I just want this weather to be over now :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 16:48

Ok, apparently I do have some unexpected free time!

UriGeller · 12/02/2014 16:52

How long is this wind going to last? We're in NW and its gusting wildly but no damage as far as I can see. Got to go out with the juggernaut double pram tomorrow. Its basically a high sided vehicle

chocolateshoes · 12/02/2014 16:53

Thanks errol. I think I'll stay home then & will give jujitsu a miss. We've been so lucky to escape all the previous bad weather, I'm worried it's our turn now.

Stay safe everyone.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 16:54

met office warnings have been updated. The amber zones have been expanded from what I can see but I'm not quite sure. Snow warnings out too.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 16:55

Winds will pretty quickly die down to a more blustery level over night.

pepperrabbit · 12/02/2014 16:56

I was scared driving home from work earlier in the worst of our bit of the storm (NE Hampshire), standing water on the roads and bits of tree flying around with just sheets of water coming down and sideways at the car. I cannot imagine how awful it must be for everyone in the red warning area. And the traffic lights had been blown round on the roundabout so you had different lights telling you different things at the same time Hmm
Then we had huge amounts of hail at about 3pm, then bright sunshine Confused.
Now it's windy but dry. My fence didn't make it Angry

CPtart · 12/02/2014 16:59

Also in lancashire. Extremely windy, huge tree in front garden swaying wildly. Have just weighted down bins and garden furniture but wind sounds like it will blow the window panes through.
