Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Met-monkey's weather warnings are here. Think it sort of follows what the metoffice think as well.

(Apologies, I know I've posted this link before) but the Guardian have a very good live blog with the latest weather/travel updates.

GloriaSmud · 12/02/2014 10:24

It certainly is a strange one. All/most of the other storms we've had seemed to have developed slowly, over US/Canada way. That one just seems to suddenly be there, off the SW coast.

magimedi · 12/02/2014 10:26

Flowers OYBBK - first page I look at every morning.

Don't apologise, Glotia - it's a really great blog & I forget about it if you don't link it.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/02/2014 10:32

viva, the weather will be the least of your worries if you are off to mansfield. Confused

Antidote · 12/02/2014 10:54

Absolutely foul down here on the Devon Cornwall border. I'm worried about the boats in moorings out in the Tamar.

Hoping Hester is ok.

We are planning to fly from newquay to Gatwick tomorrow (thought it would be preferable to the non existent trains!)

BlackeyedSusan · 12/02/2014 11:01

RED WIND WARNINGS ISSUED!
here

lizzylocket · 12/02/2014 11:03

It's getting worse here on my bit of the Pembs coast. Tenby secondary school are closing due to high winds. My poor DH is working outside in this, hope he's got some rocks in his pockets!

sewingandcakes · 12/02/2014 11:04

Oooooh we're right in the path of the red wind warning in rossendale!

magimedi · 12/02/2014 11:10

Stay safe all of you in those areas.

Make a thermos of tea as well, while you've got power.

ExcuseTypos · 12/02/2014 11:13

I've just seen the reporter on BBC news, he's in Porthleven.
The wind and rain looks horrendousSad.

We're in west hants. It's very windy but not too bad.

kippersmum · 12/02/2014 11:13

absolutely foul here in IOM. Heavy rain & wind getting ever stronger

ExcuseTypos · 12/02/2014 11:14

Yes hope you all stay safe. My dd is in Bristol, I assume it will be rather windy there today. I'm going o text her and tell her to stay inside!

kippersmum · 12/02/2014 11:18

OYBBK I'm starting to get slightly concerned now, according to the latest shipping forecast Lundy Fastnet & Irish Sea have Hurricane F12 imminent www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/marine-shipping-forecast/#?tab=map eeek!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 11:34

Just got in
Red warnings issued for north Wales and the NW. Please take heed, this means that it is extremely dangerous, these warning are issued very rarely.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 11:37

not just north Wales actually but western Wales - sorry, just catching up.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 11:37

kippersmum, you are right to be concerned. This really is a very dangerous storm.

sewingandcakes · 12/02/2014 11:39

OYBBK, thanks for doing all this for everyone. As I'm in the red zone (I think) I'm charging phones and iPads, making sure we have candles, blankets and torches ready and I think I'll bring the bins into the garage. Is there anything else I can do to get ready?

alancashirelass · 12/02/2014 11:45

My parents live on the seafront in Lancashire right in the firing line so I've emailed them the red warning link. It is always blowing a gale there but this does sound more serious. Feeling quite glad I don't live there anymore to be honest and hoping they will stay indoors today.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 11:45

I'd consider where your car is parked (think roof tiles). Think 'day's' rather than hours in terms of no electricity.

Find your insurance documents. Remove anything critical from your loft. Think about any neighbours who are vulnerable. Make sure you have cash (no power=no credit cards) and pet food. Bring in any outdoor pets.

However a lot of that is a bit late really, it already may not be safe to go out. I think that this storm had been ignored too much by the media who were obsessing about flooding.

as suggested sewing get some flasks of hot water ready. put the heating on no so the house will be warmer if it goes off. freeze ice blocks in the freezer to use in the fridge...get some food prepered? hot soup in a flask?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 11:46

lancashirelass, it is much more serious than the usual winter storm. It has been a long time since mainland england has seen these kinds of winds.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 11:50

I think there is still some evidence of a squall line reaching a line fromHampshire up around 1pm.

The worst of the winds will be from a sting jet forming over NW Wales and up through the NW midlands/southern NW england

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 11:55

If you want to read up on sting jets met office pdf

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/02/2014 11:56

I'm hoping that Lost is setting off for her dc.

AngryFeet · 12/02/2014 11:58

So we have nothing to be concerned about in the south east (inland)?
