Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

OYBBK I just wanted to pop back and say that we had an incredibly easy drive to North Wales in the small wee hours yesterday followed by a mill pond crossing across the Irish Sea. DH and I found the journey tough going as we're so tired. When on the ferry he said 'I'm so glad we left it another day, thank goodness for that woman on MN.'

So again, thank you for helping keep me and my family safe. Now, any advice on getting the DDs to sleep through the night in a new environment?? That in any of your weather models!?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2014 20:39

:)
I'm really glad you had a good journey. I feel all glowy warm now! You are very welcome!

Sadly I don't have a clue about how to get reluctant sleepers to bed but I hope they get the hang of it tonight!

SE.
Just had another shower. 10 degrees. no sunshine so far

GloriaSmud · 18/02/2014 21:11

Been a nice couple of days here (Leicester) Warmest temp today was 11.4C ~ it's been nice to get out in the garden and do some pruning and tidying up. I realised earlier that today has been the first time in a couple of weeks there have been no metoffice weather warnings!

BlackeyedSusan · 19/02/2014 01:21

there's summt wrong with the weather warnings map....tis gone all green. Confused

digerd · 19/02/2014 07:10

SE
We did get some sunshine in the afternoon but also showers yesterday. My pruning day was Monday - specifically my yellow leaved climbing jasmine, Gladstone clematis and a smothered rose on another arch.
I still enjoy the pruning but it's the bending down and picking up from the ground that is painful in my lumber region these days. That is still to be done.

I saw actual daffodil heads yesterday all ready to bloom Smile

Llareggub · 19/02/2014 08:05

There's blue sky! Sun! I am looking out over Swansea Bay and it is really clear for the first time this year. On an exceptionally clear day I can see Devon. It's not quite that clear but there have been times this year when I haven't even been able to tell where the sea begins and the sky ends. Let's hope this is a sign of better things to come.

mankyscotslass · 19/02/2014 08:11

Grey and damp here, but it has been incredibly mild. My potted daffodils have all budded and are almost ready to bloom.

Driving to Scotland today.

What's the rest of the week looking like for the SW? Was horrid here yesterday morning, had to go and pick my new ( new to me ) car up and had trouble getting there as some of the roads had been closed due to flooding, the house we picked up the car from had the river running through the field behind their house and it was very close to their garden ( luckily their garden was on a slope and I'm sure it must have been a lot higher last week ). We had rain all day Monday and half of yesterday, thought it was meant to be getting better?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2014 08:30

Marne, Relatively it has got better and has so far followed what was expected: less stormy and less severe but still lots of rain and as I've said the catchments are very sensitive to rain still. I'd expect some heavy rain in the early hours tomorrow. Then generally showery. Saturday could either be pretty reasonable or rather wet.

OYBBK great sage of the weather, do I cancel football training tonight? Again. We really don't mind getting a bit wet or a bit blown about but we do mind that flood lights going off and having to use snorkels. I really REALLY want to get them out training but the littlies are only 4 and I worry they might blow away Grin.

LostInWales · 19/02/2014 08:37

WOW how weird does the weather warnings page look with 5 days of just normal looking green maps!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2014 08:42

Lost, it looks pretty heavy rain in the SW of Wales (esp towards the coast) this evening and gusting to 30mph. Not my idea of fun!

Llareggub · 19/02/2014 09:39

I take it back. The bay has disappeared again and the blue skies are well and truly gone. My son's teacher has tried to take them on a walk along the sea front for the last few weeks but it has been cancelled due to the crazy weather. Maybe they'll get to do it before the end of the summer term!

Marne · 19/02/2014 12:21

Suns just come out here going to attempt to wash the car and maybe Hoover if it stays sunny out.

digerd · 19/02/2014 16:38

SE.
Sunny and bright all morning, but at 2pm it had clouded over. Must have rained in the night as puddles remaining in the gutters and potholes.
Mild.

LostInWales · 19/02/2014 20:28

Yup, quite wet but we didn't blow away and the lovely little footballers had an awesome time. Everything has been cancelled recently so they needed a big run about. We've decided we will only cancel for weather warnings in future otherwise we won't ever get anything done!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2014 20:58

Well done for running it Lost :)

LostInWales · 19/02/2014 21:23

TBH I am in danger of being lynched by a bunch of 6 year olds if I cancel again, there are 6 coaches over three teams and a gang of parents who help out, it's really good fun, all ages, all abilities (I am low down on the coaching ability scale Grin) and fortunately being Welsh no one minds getting wet!

digerd · 20/02/2014 07:29

SE.
Forecast was right again that the night temp was not much lower than the day and is now already 10.5. BUT looks very wet and grey.
I have one primrose growing in a trough near the house which has been blooming all through the winter . Still waiting for the wallflowers to bloom.

mummylin2495 · 20/02/2014 09:55

Raining all the time down here in Dorset. Not going to help all the flooded fields etc

SpottyTeacakes · 20/02/2014 10:01

Wet and windy. I've got to go out Sad

mummylin2495 · 20/02/2014 12:19

Rain all gone , lovely sunny day now

Nocomet · 20/02/2014 23:11

Sunshine and showers and a spectacular double rainbow driving home.

fields are reappearing out the lakes, although the river Seven is still over the road (that's DDs fault for doing a 1/2 term course down there). As soon as she's back at school it will be open again.
