Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Was very windy here ( north dorset ) last night, our trampoline was blown down the garden, neighbours fence came down but no major damage, I went out this morning and there were a few small trees down. My grandparents down the road have no electric ( half the village seem to be with out but we are ok ), sun is out now, wind has died down but lots of showers about.

firstpost · 15/02/2014 16:44

Lots of trees down here Hmm worst storm so far. Stone henge area.

HesterShaw · 15/02/2014 17:49

Well we've spent the day mopping up and clearing our and removing rubble. If the roof can be replaced quickly and if the sea remains a bit flatter and if the rain holds off (ha) the damage won't be too bad.

Lot of 'ifs' there.

SE
We had a short sharp shock of a downpour around 1.30 pm, then back to being sunny and blustery. Couldn't believe how in 20 minutes the roads and pavements were bone dry again. But the lake in the playing fields is still just as large and has small white water birds swimming on it . Could be sea gulls?

LIZS · 15/02/2014 18:01

Intermittent heavy showers and hail with bright sunshine . Still a little windy too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2014 18:02

Oh crumbs Hester. You must be very tired now.

OP posts:
HesterShaw · 15/02/2014 18:06

Exhausted. Last night was quite frightening.

HesterShaw · 15/02/2014 18:07

At least it's been dry and calm (ish) today. Not one drop of rain Shock

JanePurdy · 15/02/2014 19:09

HesterShaw where are you? We are heading down near Looe tomorrow. Hope things are okay.

HesterShaw · 15/02/2014 19:12

I'm further west than that. I'm sure you will be fine.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2014 19:19

I'm sure it was frightening. You need to look after yourself this evening, snuggle down if you can.

OYBBK we've been out and about and I did spot something strange (albeit on a small scale) that may be weather related. A house nearby has a gravel / pebble driveway (the dc's try and kick the stones if they are on the path). But today we walked past and the stones were scattered everywhere, on the path and up the road. Probably 20-30m from the actual driveway. Would a mini-tornado whip up stones and scatter them? I didn't notice if any cars or windows were damaged because DS was being a pest crossing the road.

Anyway, temporary fence repair day tomorrow, might just anchor the panels against the tree so we have some privacy. It's driving me loopy having a giant communal back garden.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2014 22:42

The wind last night was strong enough to lift pebbles and when wind passes buildings sometimes you get eddy vortexes that act very much like small weak tornadoes. I saw similar today with blocks of flats close together. Tiles had come down in a pattern very consistent with an eddy vortex.

It's interesting isn't it :)

(Eddy Vortex would be a great name for a singer!)

Any news on the sink hole in Hemel Hempstead? Last i heard it was being assessed..

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2014 22:52

Grin it would be!

Really feel for those people there. I watched a program about sink holes in Florida earlier.

Btw I should have said vortices Blush I blame wine.

We had six fence panels knocked flat, three on each side, directly opposite each other, as though an elephant had trotted through in a very straight line! DH thinks that last night was by far the worst storm we've had so far here (Surrey).

It may be a while before we replace them as I suspect fence panels will be like gold dust for the next few weeks!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2014 22:57

I think that it was the worst storm out of the lot for central south and the SE
We did see a chap with 2 panels tied to the roof of his car at 9am. Well impressed that he was being sp speedy about it. Not so impressed with the way he had tied them on. He looked likely to lose his second lot of panels in 12 hours!

I feel sorry for the families of those that have died, but tbh i'm surprised more haven't lost lives, given the amount of fallen trees, freak waves etc..

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2014 23:12

I'm amazed too Jellykat. I think it shows that us Brits have a healthy dose of self preservation.

I hate walking past the tower block and getting caught in the swirl of litter and leaves caused by the wind, I shall know what to call it now. there used to be one in leic near the council buildings. hd to ctch bus from near there.

I saw similar here yesterday. It was the house/garden on the left of a narrow footpath, houses on the right and exposed at the back facing west. Previously the bushes along the path way had all fallen down in a storm at the same place. Obviously a vulnerable spot for those vortices thingies .
only 1 degree outside but only a smidging of frost on the grass here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/02/2014 09:08

No real storms as such showing on GFS this morning but a fairly unsettled outlook with rain at times (including tomorrow). I'm hoping that the additional rainfall after tomorrow's lot won't put too much additional pressure on the water catchments, but they are very sensitive at the moment.

Long term forecast isn't fab. It might be worth preparing for a cold (and snowy???) start to march but remember how unreliable long term forecasting is.

Apparently the plural of vortex can be vortexes. Who knew?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/02/2014 09:31

Apparently the Thames barrier was built in 1980 and 25% of all closures have been in the last two months.

That fact really jumped out at me.
