Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Today will be one of those sunshine and squally showers days with strong gusts at times. Perhaps with hail and thunder for some.

Outlook: Less stormy for at least the short term (though a low does develop on gfs for thursday). However still plenty of rain around, perhaps heavy at times. Monday/tuesday could make unpleasant additions to the rainfall totals but I dont have a huge amount of time this am to analyse.

140,000 homes without electricity today. Astonished mine isnt one of them, the way the power was dipping.

yes please to the winter/summer storms and convection please!

blue sky but windy here now. might brave a walk in the fields though might go the long way round and back rather than cut across the field near me that is like a sucking slipping clay pit even after usual rain. dread to think what it would be like today though would probably burn a lot of calories Grin

be interested to see how the hedegrows and trees are looking in the nature reserve.

i like wind and bright sky so long as it doesn't mean destruction.

meglet · 15/02/2014 09:07

North Hampshire. The wind was howling all night. The dc's ran upstairs to tell me the fence has fallen down . No power cut though.

Kernowgal · 15/02/2014 09:21

Blooming awful night in mid-Surrey. Not much sleep here. Expecting quite a lot of trees down. Hope everyone is ok!

digerd · 15/02/2014 09:30

SE.
Managed the dog walk in sun and wind but no rain. Some gardens with fences down but trees holding up.

Mirage · 15/02/2014 09:57

Awful night in Leicestershire, far worse than Wednesday,I could feel the house juddering in the wind and hardly slept.Still very windy so no riding today.

LIZS · 15/02/2014 10:08

wind a bit calmer at the moment but rain just starting again - SE. Another fence panel gone overnight and another on its way.

thenightsky · 15/02/2014 10:11

Last night was the worst for lincolnshire too. far worse than Wed.

mumat39 · 15/02/2014 10:17

Morning all.

The wind last night was scary! Didn't get much sleep.

It was very dark and gloomy looking a few minutes ago. Now it is lovely bright and sunny.

Hope everyone is ok. Hester, so sorry to hear you've had lots of damage.

Xxx

BlackeyedSusan · 15/02/2014 10:48

mums net was down for about 4 and a half hour when i went to bed. it was too noisy to go earlier.

going to read back now aand see what I missed.

flootshoot · 15/02/2014 10:52

Our sky dish is in the front garden. However I slept like a log last night. Hmm

LurkingCinners · 15/02/2014 11:12

A bit of fence is missing, and I saw 3 fallen trees this morning on the way to my fitness class (South East edge of London).
The lid of the rabbit hutch was blown open, poor rabbit got all wet. Thankfully no foxes were around.

Nocomet · 15/02/2014 11:38

Nothing like as windy here as Wednesday, (North of Gloucester), When we had trees down and the power off for 5 hours. Didn't flicker last night.

Any news on the state of Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole area?

I'll get DH to ring DSIL later (fortunately she's inland and at no risk of flooding.)

denialandpanic · 15/02/2014 11:41

We lost power about 10:30, still off but I'm leaving the countryGrin poor dp. still a bit windy not looking forward to take off. lots of trees down locally Farnham / godalming ish

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2014 11:42

I'm rather interested in any damage reports in a line from Poole to west of Basingstoke. The radar showed some very interesting characteristics yesterday evening. Unfortunately Mumsnet went down shortly after and so I was unable to ask then.

Please make the most of the calmer weather this week :(

It does look better for a few days - some rain around and perhaps enough to warrant a warning on tuesday, but not nearly as stormy. Warm too, with temps into double figures in the south.

However. there are indications that the atlantic wins once again at the end of the week. Not guaranteed, need to pray that it doesnt. But I would make any clear up a priority in case the latest GFS (and eCMWF to some extent) are right.

Thanks for the link Jungfrau - some major damage going on there.

I think that even if anything tornadic did spin up last night it would be very hard to differentiate it from the 'noise' of the straight line wind damage.

OYBBK , from the sound of it last nights wind was the worst we've had in Basingstoke all winter. I was sitting here thinking the end of October storms were nothing compared to last nights gusts. It looks like there's more fence damage down the street. We are still in pj's haven't been out yet so I don't know what the state of trees, the expanding river loddon is.

Jungfraujoch · 15/02/2014 12:20

OYBKK - I'm about 3/4 mile inland and I was worried about my roof! Luckily all the fences are still standing in our garden - DH says it's his brilliant fence making capabilities!!!

LostInWales · 15/02/2014 12:28

I don' know why, after all the pictures of floods, roofs off, trees down but the broken beach huts are the saddest thing I've seen. Poor happy summer holidays houses.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2014 12:44

Oh stupid weather!

met office warnings ice tomorrow but then rain in the SW monday.

OP posts:
pepperrabbit · 15/02/2014 13:47

NE Hants, slightly east of Basingstoke here. The wind was far worse than Wed, we've lost 2 fence panels and a ridge tile which is smashed to smithereens Sad. The roof looks very odd without it and rather vulnerable. There are lots of trees down.

mummylin2495 · 15/02/2014 15:14

After a lovely sunny day up until now, the sky has darkened and the rain is starting again here in Bournemouth
