Sunny clear skies here - Mankycat has ventured out, though I think he will be back very soon to curl up on the radiator cover.

digerd · 25/12/2013 11:59

S.Herts
Been sunny all day so far, which makes me worry about DD driving when sun is in her eyes as she forgot her sunglasses.
Tomorrow will be worse as she will be driving home southwards.

MillyChristmas · 25/12/2013 12:05

North Wales very calm today.....no snow though Sad Smile

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 07:37

That's a shame Milly. I guess the showers didnt get going in your area.

Still looking like wind wise the storm will hit Ireland/NI and northern midlands up. Some rather heavy rain in the south.

digerd · 26/12/2013 07:51

Oh no, not more rain in the south. Very quiet and still atm - but dismal.

DameDeepRedBetty · 26/12/2013 08:50

NE Wilts very quiet, quite misty, but obviously blue sky not far away, hopefully will break through soon.

magimedi · 26/12/2013 09:08

Frosty but wall to wall blue sky here in East Sussex.

Time for a walk!

oricella · 26/12/2013 09:36

The sun has just come up and actually shining; can't remember when that last happened!

Cindy34 · 26/12/2013 10:08

Looks nice outside. Guess it is the lull before the storm.

Are winds stronger the nearer to they eye of the storm? Likely to be more therefore in north than south?

Snargaluff · 26/12/2013 10:14

Am due to drive Manchester to leeds tomorrow morning, with a flight from leeds in the afternoon. Not sure of likelihood of flying now, what do people think?

curlew · 26/12/2013 10:18

We're planning on driving from Kent to Manchester on the 30th- has anyone got any views on whether that would be sensible?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 12:09

Will be able to help later, some family time for a bit :)

My sister needs to drive from S London to Brighton and was due to set off about 10am tomorrow - she's worried about the forecast - is it better to travel today do you think? Keep looking at the forecasts and it looks like the worst could be over by then but not sure....

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 14:47

met office warnings

Ambers for wind for northern England, Wales and Parts of Yorks.

Yellows for Wind for Southern scotland through to the Midlands and also down the west coast and the north east coast to the very tippy top of Scotland.

Rain warnings for the south and west.

It is actually the rain that concerns me most because the of the cumulative effect. This isnt the last of the storms. I know that some areas have already had severe flooding and although we arent expecting rainfall totals to be as high with this storm as on Monday/Tuesday, it isnt good news.

Wind wise, I think the amber areas will see gusts to 70mph, maybe 80mph in exposed areas. I guess in general the yellow areas will see gusts 50-70mph perhaps.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 14:56

splish - I maybe wouldnt recommend a cross country for your sister - some of the local roads in Sussex are just emerging from local flooding which will be back again tomorrow.

Curlew - wind wise the 30th is fine. GFS shows wet though in the morning. Take care on the roads.

Cindy, storms are more complex than that. It depends on their structure. On Monday/Tuesday, as well as the storm force winds in Scotland there were also extreme gales in parts of the south and yet in between it was just rather windy/not very windy. But yes if you were to really generalise you tend to find the stronger winds closer to the centre of the low pressure (but not at the centre itself)

Snarg - unsure - I think there may be some disruption but I'm afraid thats one for the airport/airline. Take care on your drive.

Thanks. Fingers crossed.

digerd · 26/12/2013 15:28

S.Herts.
Very calm here today and had lots of sun.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 15:39

Its lovely digerd isnt it :)

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 15:47

Fortunately I think that none of the low pressures coming up look as intense windwise as we've had/about to have. so much rain around though. Interesting charts popping up second week of Jan - it turns colder, with still a lot of precipitation. Cold enough for snow??? Perhaps.

TheDoctrineOfSanta · 26/12/2013 15:49

Have to drive from Cardiff to Windsor tomorrow (any time) or on Saturday morning - does it matter which? Sounds like the storms will be quite a way north.

denialandpanic · 26/12/2013 16:21

kitten just wanted to say merry Christmas and thank you for all your advice this week.We lost power Monday night and just got it back this afternoon. We were at least prepared with devices charged as much as possible, shopping finished etc. bbq turkey is surprisingly goodWink I really hope the next storms just Bugger off

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 16:27

That was a long outage d&p - welcome back! You bbqd the turkey? any tips for future years just in case?!

Im done with storms. We need chance for everyone to recover, repairs to be done and then a bit of snow so we know it is winter. I saw hawthorn in blossom today. How mad is that?

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 16:30

Doctrine, maybe leave mid afternoon or a bit later just so you arent driving into very heavy rain. Winds will be gusting to around 50mph in Cardiff til mid afternoon too.
