A just for fun thread! Remember I’m not a professional and it’s important not to base decisions on what I say in forecasting threads as I may very well get it wrong. At this point in time I am looking at GFS, as other charts come into range I will start discussing those too. I’m also looking at the GFS ensembles (which at present as you would expect have a wide range of solutions, most of which are mild). The forecast will change as we go along considering how far out we are at present.

In general over the next couple of weeks we seem to be kept in mild southerlies or south-westerly’s, with more potential for storms and there isn’t much promise of a cold Christmas. The 24th December has finally made into the range of the GFS. What a chart!! It shows a deep low which would bring severe gales and a mix of heavy snow (for some) and heavy rain (for most) across the UK with the snow risk being greater the further north you are.

It’s a stonker of a chart, but probably not a welcome one!

Shocking on the M4 by cheively. We are doing team driving. I'm telling DH when the road is turning more southerly so he can anticipate the gusts coming from different directions.

piratecat · 23/12/2013 22:10

just went out to the bin with the rubbish. it was the most windy i have ever known, i'm at the top of a hill!

The garden is trashed, everything everywhere. south devon. very near the coastline.

Take care Antidote. Very blowy here in outer London.

Antidote · 23/12/2013 22:36

Thanks Dis. The wind turbine at reading was flying round.

It is very gusty but DH is doing sterling work. He keeps telling me stories about crossing Denmark in a VW camper when it was so windy that the windscreen wipers were lifting off!

Turning off the M4 now ...

ColouringInQueen · 23/12/2013 23:13

Seriously windy here now (Bucks) wind howling in the chimney. Haven't ventured into our bedroom at the back of the house which gets the full force of the wind - its going to be a v noisy night! Take care all

Bit windy here although it was noisier about ten o'clock. The sky is very clear and bright, nice moon and very shiny stars! Not sure what will happen overnight. Sending you all peaceful night wishes!

PacificDingbat · 24/12/2013 07:34

Now the forecast sounds a bit more scary for Scotland.....
Happy Christmas Eve to everyone Xmas Smile

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 24/12/2013 07:37

Happy Christmas eve. I updated the warnings thread with vague thoughts on Scotland and the NW. I really feel for you up there. It was pretty bad down here - combination of flooding and 70mph winds. ugh.

You're up early too.
I'll go and have a look.

DebbieFiderer · 24/12/2013 07:44

What's the forecast for today in the south? My sister is driving from Kent Surrey this afternoon/evening. It seems calmer here (Surrey) today, fingers crossed it stays that way.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 24/12/2013 07:50

Breezy and some showers around but much better. I think its good though that she isnt setting off for a while, a lot of trees down and flooding. Not good conditions.

Fab, thanks :)

RooneyWanderingStara · 24/12/2013 08:01

Hello,

checking in - not tooooo bad as far as I can see here in the SE. Loads of rain and some stuff has blown over but no disasters I'm aware of.

I wondered how the Islands are going to fare? I have family on Rum, so hoping they are not going to be swept away Smile

Marne · 24/12/2013 08:30

Didn't get much sleep was then woken by sirens going past our house, apparently a lot of people are getting trapped in flood water, we have flood warning for the River Stour (which is just down the road from us). Our garden is a mess, fence is flattened and all the neighbour stuff is in our garden, luckily our trampoline is still there Grin unlike a lot of other peoples (am seeing lots of photo's on fb of trampolines on top of sheds). Still having showers here but is calming a little.

Perihelion · 24/12/2013 08:56

Kitten just re read your OP for this thread. Absolutely spot on for Xmas Eve in Scotland.....Gale force winds, with heavy rain and snow forecast 16 days in advance Grin
Hope you're getting over last night.

Perihelion · 24/12/2013 09:01

Windy with Sleet in Edinburgh now. Of to walk the dogs, then nothing more exciting than trifle making or me.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 24/12/2013 09:13

Bit of a good coincidence that Perihelion Grin

V windy in w Fife now, but not terrible. We're up a hill and really suffer if it's coming from the west but it seems to be SW so we get a bit of shelter from the house next door.
