A just for fun thread! Remember I’m not a professional and it’s important not to base decisions on what I say in forecasting threads as I may very well get it wrong. At this point in time I am looking at GFS, as other charts come into range I will start discussing those too. I’m also looking at the GFS ensembles (which at present as you would expect have a wide range of solutions, most of which are mild). The forecast will change as we go along considering how far out we are at present.

In general over the next couple of weeks we seem to be kept in mild southerlies or south-westerly’s, with more potential for storms and there isn’t much promise of a cold Christmas. The 24th December has finally made into the range of the GFS. What a chart!! It shows a deep low which would bring severe gales and a mix of heavy snow (for some) and heavy rain (for most) across the UK with the snow risk being greater the further north you are.

It’s a stonker of a chart, but probably not a welcome one!

Home safe from London, not going out till it looks calm enough tomorrow.

Hope everyone's travel plans come off!

Antidote · 23/12/2013 20:20

M5 is awash but functioning. We've driven in windier conditions, but that was before the DCs.

Luckily other drivers seem to be fairly sensible at the moment.

No idea how long it's going to take to get to PILs.

Surface water is crazy near Taunton

SpottyChristmasCakes · 23/12/2013 20:25

Travelin my sister is doing the opposite drive Grin

I've got to leave for work at 6 tomorrow I'm slightly worried about flooding as I had to divert once on the way home and managed to get through one lake road but it will no doubt be worse in the morning...

Antidote · 23/12/2013 20:57

Definitely less bad as we are nearing Bristol

piratecat · 23/12/2013 21:06

south devon has got worse, wind is crackers.

ColouringInQueen · 23/12/2013 21:09

thanks hoochy - my dbro sent it me - I liked it Xmas Smile

Justy here in the home counties...

keep safe all x

Antidote · 23/12/2013 21:13

Massive gusts just north of Bristol on M5.

I take it back about the other drivers being sensible:we've just passed someone smoking a massive joint Camberwell carrot style!

Wow. Crazy cross winds now we are on the M4. Slowing right down. Our massive red brick of a car is suddenly less fun to drive (says DH, I'm not driving!)

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 23/12/2013 21:20

Still very quiet here, the odd gust of wind. Think we're meant to get battered overnight although to be honest we get battered here all year round! :o

HesterShaw · 23/12/2013 21:27

Kitten said we would be buffetted again, and sure enough we are.

Rissolesfortea · 23/12/2013 21:38

We are driving from south Cornwall to Lincolnshire tomorrow, planning on leaving 6 am, any ideas what it will be like?

HesterShaw · 23/12/2013 21:41

Blimey, that's an even longer drive than me! I think the worst is supposed to have past by morning, Rissoles. It will still be windy. Not quite as awful as today though.

Antidote · 23/12/2013 21:41

No idea rissoles, but it's nice to hear from another Cornisher

Rissolesfortea · 23/12/2013 21:44

I hope not Hester I'm nervous enough in the car!

Antidote · 23/12/2013 21:44

I hope for your sake it is less exciting than what we're in now. The M4 by cirencester is terrifying. mostly due to the side gusts and kamikaze van drivers.

Meglet · 23/12/2013 21:45

Scary in North Hampshire. I can add a loud bang to the mysterious crack from earlier.

I've gone on a silly laundry binge to get ahead in case there's a power cut. We know where the torches and wind up lamp are too.

Rissolesfortea · 23/12/2013 21:49

I dont want excitement, just a safe journey will do me Xmas Grin

oadcb · 23/12/2013 21:49

Its really nasty in Cornwall, windy And rain.lots of crashing and banging

power cut has damaged my TV hub. Partner decided go out to his friends and I'm awaiting his return nervously.

Marne · 23/12/2013 21:55

Not good here in Dorset, things are crashing around outside but I won't be able to see the damage until the morning as it's too dark, last week we lost a fence panel, we havn't repaired it as we knew worse weather was to come. We are stuck in the village, all roads out are flooded, my dd's Christmas presents are at my mums house and I have no idea if I will be able to get them in the morning Sad , hate this weather.

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/12/2013 21:57

My mum is flying in to Heathrow from Amsterdam tomorrow afternoon. Will that be ok? Planes should be ok, right?

Geckos48 · 23/12/2013 21:57

We have serious weather going on in wiltshire now. The wind is unbelievably loud, just went outside to tape the letter box shut and it was ridiculous.

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/12/2013 22:00

She rang this morning to say the weather was fine her end. I did not have the heart to tell her it was stormy here (she is a panicker...)

oadcb · 23/12/2013 22:03

Unconfirmed electrical substation explosion down here

Marne · 23/12/2013 22:04

I think the weather is moving north tomorrow morning so south should clear from 6am ( chances of showers still ) so hopefully flights will be ok of later in the day.

Fingers crossed for everyone who has family travelling, please take care if driving as there's huge amounts of water on the road.
