A just for fun thread! Remember I’m not a professional and it’s important not to base decisions on what I say in forecasting threads as I may very well get it wrong. At this point in time I am looking at GFS, as other charts come into range I will start discussing those too. I’m also looking at the GFS ensembles (which at present as you would expect have a wide range of solutions, most of which are mild). The forecast will change as we go along considering how far out we are at present.

In general over the next couple of weeks we seem to be kept in mild southerlies or south-westerly’s, with more potential for storms and there isn’t much promise of a cold Christmas. The 24th December has finally made into the range of the GFS. What a chart!! It shows a deep low which would bring severe gales and a mix of heavy snow (for some) and heavy rain (for most) across the UK with the snow risk being greater the further north you are.

It’s a stonker of a chart, but probably not a welcome one!

Oh FFS. DH just suggested we make sandwiches and take sleeping bags on our trip.

We are planning to leave at about 6pm, it is still raging .

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 15:12

ouch oad!

I enjoyed my walk Xmas Grin at the moment its just small branches and fences down here - so far. Watercourses are really struggling and I think there will be back garden flooding by tomorrow morning. I did eye up one or two trees with trepidation before I dashed past them.

And as you might expect with a radar showing a broken squall line like that now TORRO have issued a tornado watch covering both this squall line and the frontal wave that will cross tonight.

Very weird to watch my barometer reading fall before my eyes. 988 atm.

Tornado warning! Jeepers!

I have 996 hPa on my weather station. Have never known what the bars mean, but there are just 3 off a full house. Think it is the pressure.
Dog walk at 3pm was awful and the noise of the wind in the trees was terrifying. Have closed all the curtains and got the TV on so can see and hear nothing.Smile

There was a crack outside just now. Can't decide if it's the beginning of the end of the fence or the huge tree (safe distance well behind our house) is starting to go.

NK5BM3 · 23/12/2013 16:46

Made it past m6 tolls from kent. It was vvv wet and windy/gusty. At the motorway stop on the way up, nearly
got blown away, couldn't open the car door - the wind was that ferocious.

Another hour to go to destination..! And now I read that the journey back down is bad too on Saturday??? Shock

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 16:48

latest GFS has tightened the pressure gradient even further for scotland through tomorrow and sadly into the first part of Christmas day too. I think there may be more wide spread gusts of 80mph up there in the amber warning area, with the usual ridiculous gusts in the Cairngorms.

It has moved friday's storm further north, taking the south out of the firing line but looking very nasty indeed once again in Scotland with similar gusts to tomorrow unfortunately. It may well change and come south again, so its something to keep an eye on for us all.

Its followed in quick succession by a little low on Sunday and one on New Years eve, both need to be watched.

Tornado watch=the conditions may be right for one to form rather than there will be tornadoes.

It's passed through here quite quickly (West Cornwall) - no blown down trees down here that I've heard of though I did pass a yacht which had toppled over. Someone's in for a nasty surprise when they next go down to do their polishing.

Sounds as though it's more intense further east.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 17:44

It might get a bit windier again Hester for a couple of hours, esp on the south coast.

It's been worse in salisbury to be honest. Wind is not too high but it is absolutely chucking it down with rain x

Queen its utterly blasting along isnt it. Perhaps record speeds.

Pinkkoala, the models are still coming up with different positions for Fridays storm so at the moment I'm afraid its a case of be prepared until things firm up.

Elbow, depending on the details of when the storm is due to arrive I'd consider rebooking them for thursday evening if you can. Might be still ok Friday morning, but I'm not sure.
