2013/2014 Winter - Should we be getting ready for 'snowmageddon'?

According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

Just been out side and it feels bitter cold. +5.8 outsideConfused
Ominous or the usual inconsistency?

I've created a specific warnings thread discussing the gales and snow here

Not expecting any snow in the south, snow risk is primarily confined to the north (and primarilyScotland I think at present esp the NE). interesting hints of wintery weather mid December which I'm keeping an eye on.

Going to be very very cold though later on Thursday into Friday for the whole of England, Scotland and Wales.

I've updated the warning thread for tomorrow.

Might not be just the north who gets a bit of excitement. It's possible that the cold front travelling south might develop into a nice squall line, giving sudden high winds etc. keeping an eye on that.

As for the coming weeks.... Looking on the average/mild side according to GFS. met office are hinting at something colder half way through the month. I'm not sure why but obviously they have access to models that the public don't have.

Will start a 'will it snow at Christmas' thread on Sunday :)

Ah-ha. I've just looked at the ECMWF ensembles (collection of model runs, all with slightly different starting points) and the average is much colder than the operational model. (Also a huge amount of uncertainty showing)

It is freezing here today after lots of mild weather. Strong, cold wind and a bit of sleety stuff earlier.

I'm hoping for some snow on Friday as I have to do something that I don't want to do, and if it was snowed off that would be excellent.

Think I will be disappointed though.

Lovely blue skies for much of the daylight hours ( which isn't many atm ) in Edinburgh and so calm after yesterday's gales. Just a hint of tiny wee snow flakes at teatime. Cloudy now and cold so reckon we may have some overnight, but it's to warm up again tomorrow.....

Hasn't happened, has it? Still, there's a few weeks of winter left so might still be a chance of snow but don't think it'll be the snowmageddon that everyone was saying it would be.

I remember posting on this thread in October and predicting "a wetter winter than normal" rather than snowmageddon...

...maybe I'll refrain from doing so next time.
