2013/2014 Winter - Should we be getting ready for 'snowmageddon'?

According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

I'm aiming for the comet surviving its close encounter too. My eyesight is too rubbish to pick up anything but the brightest objects and thats with a good pair of binoculars.

very average november temperature mostly cos its either been warm or cold.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 22/11/2013 11:21

Express are utterly bonkers!!!! Their readers must have the memory of a peanut (collectively) Met office are actually saying the balance of probability lies in it it being a very average winter temp wise with perhaps more chance of it being wetter than usual.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 22/11/2013 11:23

Just read through it. Which planet do they live on? I think those 'forecasters' must live in an alternate reality and the Express papers keep accidentally leaking out of a crack in the continuum. None of what they say about November is actually true.

LineRunner · 22/11/2013 11:45

I think it's all wafted down from Diana's heavenly cloud, Kitten.

MillyRules · 22/11/2013 11:48

Was minus one here last night. Snow on the mountains.....beautiful.

GloriaSmud · 22/11/2013 14:24

Maybe they (the Express) are hoping that if they keep forecasting mahoosive amounts of snow (once a week seems to be the timeline they're working on), it'll eventually come true!

digerd · 24/11/2013 08:00

Temperature up last night in S.Herts. Minimum +5. Grey skies atm.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 24/11/2013 09:52

Weather remains uninspring for the forecastable future i'm afraid. lots of grey and cold about but mostly dry at least.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 24/11/2013 09:52

uninspiring! missed out an i!

digerd · 24/11/2013 12:35

It's been spitting lightly all day here, then the sun came out for a minute and went again. It is a damp cold 8 degrees.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 24/11/2013 14:49

It's warmed up again. Back to 0 degrees today

Meglet · 25/11/2013 19:33

It's not as cold as last year is it? I'm sure it was bitter this time last year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2013 19:52

Interestingly the CET for november last year was 6.8C (that is the mean temperature in a defined area in central England). so far this year it is 6.7C so it is averaging a teeny bit colder and I suspect that will shift just a little colder by the end of the month. Last November started off really cold and then warmed up quite a bit. Its done the opposite this month.

digerd · 25/11/2013 20:14

Have just checked my diary for Nov last year, but have only the minimum night temps.
19th -1
20th +10
21 +10
22 +3.6
23 + 4.9
24 +1.5
25th +8 remained similar until 29th 1.6
30 -3
1st dec -2
.

We have had that NW wind again making it feel so bitter, probably didn't last year.

Last 2 nights have been +5 and +4 in SE

Littleredsquirrel · 25/11/2013 20:15

It absolutely freezing here today. I am sitting here in four layers with a quilt and the heating was on for two hours and I'm still cold.

digerd · 25/11/2013 20:59

My heating has been on all day going on and off with 20 degrees on the thermostat in my sitting room. Been Ok but wearing thermal leggings and fleece trousers and a thermal grade 4 vest with a very warm cardi over. On my feet I have my warm walking boots on which are like slippers.
Cushion Walk ankle boots with faux fur lining in E fitting with socks on too. They are soft fabric uppers, light as a feather and very warm.
Just ordered another pair purely for slippers in the house as walk the dog in the the othersGrin. From the Shoe Tailor. I love my red/wine colour.

GFS brings winter back in 11 days in the latest model run with a rather snowy outlook for many. Don't get too excited yet though, it's a real turnaround.

digerd · 26/11/2013 08:08

S.Herts
We had +0 .9 but no frost on the grass and a clear sky atm. That is odd?

GloriaSmud · 26/11/2013 10:03

Cold night here (Leicester) temp got down to -3.1C at 3.37am. 2.6C at the moment ~ Brrrrr!

digerd · 26/11/2013 11:17

S.Herts
Sunny here but no real warmth from it. +6 but feels colder.

GloriaSmud · 26/11/2013 12:38

Still only 4.9C here. I wouldn't mind a small plunge in to winter (like the GFS might be forecasting), I'm getting a bit fed up of the cloudy and cold 'meh' type weather that we're having at the moment.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2013 13:01

GFS still looks rather exciting from about the 7th Dec for a few days.

leesmum · 26/11/2013 14:18

Goody....does that mean we could have a bit of the white stuff?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2013 15:26

maybe......

RegainingUnconsciousness · 26/11/2013 17:59

It was -3 here this morning! Good job we were running late and I had to run down the hill to the cm!

Clearish now but holding at 4.9 currently.

Excited about potentially exciting weather!
