2013/2014 Winter - Should we be getting ready for 'snowmageddon'?

According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

That's exactly it digerd as lots of places have metres of snow at colder temps than we get.

SpottyTeacakes · 01/12/2013 08:12

Bbc said something about snow coming in Friday Confused I inly caught the end of it though

digerd · 01/12/2013 08:12

Yes, I know from living in Germany. We have an odd climate here Grin
Also a man told me we don't get the right type of snow - not cold enough. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2013 08:23

GFS is still pretty keen to keep things dry. UKMO and ECMWF show much more potential for snow, with the highest risk being eastern and northern areas.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2013 08:23

We do have an odd climate digerd Grin still,it means we get a little bit of everything!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 01/12/2013 15:19

Gloria Yes, that was the one. Absolutely amazing place for a wedding, not that we got married there. Good chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

We too have the wrong kind of snow in this part of Canada. Great for skiing and sledging but rubbish for snowmen and snowballs.

HesterShaw · 01/12/2013 15:28

Sounds like bloody awesome snow to me :o

digerd · 01/12/2013 16:34

Moose
That reminds me, I never saw snowmen or snowballing in Germany either, suppose you need wetter snow for those things. But our climate does cause more icyness on footpaths and country roads which is dangerous.
Ice-hockey and skating on the small lakes was very popular there as well as sledging.

johnworf · 01/12/2013 22:33

Is the jury still out on whether we'll get snow end of next week or not? It's a bit hit and miss (depending on which site you look at) if we're going to get it (manchester) on Fri/sat.

SE
No signs of winter here. Night temp was 7.8 and rained

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 02/12/2013 08:49

The cold weather looks set to arrive Thursday/ Friday, with Friday being very cold in the north of England and Scotland.

GFS has subzero daytime temps for central northern areas and shows a lot of snow in Scotland and northern areas of northern England over friday night into saturday but it is followed rapidly by a warm up and into positive temps for all but hilly areas during saturday. No snow for southern areas. The model goes out to the 18th and shows no further signs of snow.

ECMWF shows some snow potential for NE areas on thursday, Friday and over Saturday night. . Perhaps some hints right at the end of the model for more potential.

UKMO - maybe a little snow for some in Scotland, and actually perhaps pretty heavy on thursday night in northern scotland and hanging around in the north of Scotland on Friday into Saturday.

WhispersOfWickedness · 02/12/2013 10:18

Phew, we are Lincolnshire, so I will take from that that we will avoid snow GrinI don't mind cold, just don't want snow!

GloriaSmud · 02/12/2013 12:07

Weather warnings for strong winds/snow have been issued by the metoffice. Netweather's thoughts on the weather later in the week. And today's forecast from the Express!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 02/12/2013 13:50

well spotted Gloria! predicted winds are stronger than I expected but the snow seems broadly in line with the models I looked at with regards to location. (always a relief!)
Thank you for the laugh!

FunnyRunner · 02/12/2013 14:17

Still ridiculously mild which means I am at least getting my Christmas shopping done Smile

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 02/12/2013 14:23

OYMLK
so you know anything about the weekend of the 13th yet?
tis my 40th party in norfolk. I am hoping for open fires walks on the beach followed by a bonfire.

all of this is possible with bloody cold weather but not rain / sleet.

any idea's

Meglet · 02/12/2013 15:00

Just putting my 'woo' cap on for a moment. The squirrels are busy today, it's like they know something Wink.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 02/12/2013 15:19

At the moment GFS has the weekend of the 13th as mild and murky.

HesterShaw · 02/12/2013 17:25

So if there is snow on Thursday in, say, the Highlands, will the Express claim they have been right all along?

HesterShaw · 02/12/2013 17:29

And also, has there ever been a winter weather report in the tabloids which doesn't contain the words like "sweep", "blast", "huge", "Arctic" and so on?

Their strong wind ones crack me "A huge area of low pressure will sweep in from the Atlantic bringing winds of more than 50mph..." blah blah blah.

digerd · 02/12/2013 17:35

Yes it is remarkably mild today, but the air is full of gas central heating fumes or something. The smell of smoke was in the air and it was not barbeques surelyHmm

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 03/12/2013 02:16

-12 here at the moment (7:15pm) and snowing

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 03/12/2013 08:09

probably Hester, bit daft really. Theres a reason that highland cattle are all shaggy and woolly.

v. briefly, snow risk seems mainly contained to scotland.

more later, ran out of time :(

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 03/12/2013 09:06

hester - also 'in the grip of' all those Arctic blasts, remember? BRITAIN WILL SHIVER.

HesterShaw · 03/12/2013 10:43

Oh yes "in the grip" features strongly.

Caption of someone walking their dog in the snow: "Hiker battles blizzard."
