met office warnings For tomorrow for Scotland and NW England, extending to Yorkshire. NW Scotlant in particular looks awful with blizzard conditions.

I'm not quite sure about the warnings for England, I'm going to be really interested to see how they pan out. Tuesday scattered sleet and snow showers for many.

Sorry, I'll rephrase that, looks like a bad evening. No grit down or gritters. Taking hours to get anywhere. This is stupidity, most people in West Sussex knew that snow was coming. What forecast were the councils looking at ? [cross]

Shinyshoes1 · 11/03/2013 21:12

We've had teasers here in Essex nothing settling though

Are we expecting anything significant or settling snow of any kind oybbk

Helenagrace · 11/03/2013 21:20

West Sussex resident here too - waves at all the others.

It's grim. The A27 is closed between Worthing and Brighton and the coast road is shut to the east of Brighton. It's been snowing all day and I haven't seen a gritter all day.

Trains are a mess, although that's partly due to a suicide at Gatwick. DH's train is over 2 hours late and he's still not home yet.

harbinger · 11/03/2013 21:37

DH can't get home. Roads too bad.

Helena, hope your DH gets home safely.

PeneloPeePitstop · 11/03/2013 21:50

Met office are suggesting that the snow coming off the channel may meet the snow coming down from the North Sea in the amber area with fairly spectacular results, how likely do you think tat is, Kitten?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/03/2013 21:53

It is looking really rather likely PPP.

Shinyshoes, unless you get stuck under a train of snow showers then I think you will escape the worst of it.

I hope everyone travelling stays safe.

DH finally home - 3.5 hours after setting off for a journey that is normally just over an hour.

Sussex police are appealing for 4x4 drivers to help rescue stranded drivers near the Southwick Tunnel.

SpottyTeacakes · 12/03/2013 03:19

Fellow west Sussexers I can't believe they haven't gritted! Goodwood hill was horrendous apparently as we're bury and duncton I expect. I know someone who took four and a half hours to get through pulborough (if you know these smaller places). It's ridiculous it's a hilly area, everyone knew what the weather was going to do, I don't understand why they didn't grit Confused

reastie · 12/03/2013 06:25

Cripes, West Kent here and rush hour yesterday was awful from various fb reports - people stuck in traffic for hours and hours. We missed getting stuck in the traffic by literally less than half an hour it seems . Those poor people stuck for hours. Am seriously worried about my drive into work this morning Confused .

reastie · 12/03/2013 06:29

I just actually woke DH up doing a little dance as the school I work at is closed today due to snow Blush Grin

SpottyTeacakes · 12/03/2013 06:30

Yay snow day reastie! Back to bed you go Grin

reastie · 12/03/2013 06:32

I'm too excited at the fact I get a day off Wink

GloriaSmud · 12/03/2013 06:32

BBC report on the road situation in Kent and Sussex.

GloriaSmud · 12/03/2013 06:35

Yay reastie ~ the first 'snow day' reported in!

GloriaSmud · 12/03/2013 06:43

More snow pictures here.

We've been down as low as -3.3c overnight but now up to -2.3. Must be fairly dry air as there's no frost on the cars.

digerd · 12/03/2013 06:50

s. Herts

That's disgusting, but the norm, about not bothering to grit when they were forewarned. Sorry for all who had terrible car journeys home yesterday.

No snow here, but the galeforce winds are now more continuous than gusty and all night long and this morning still.
We have a clear sky atm. so should calm down

NandH · 12/03/2013 06:53

another west Sussexerrr here! I'm in shoreham and getting anywhere is a no go...looks like a cosy day watching dvds with the kiddys is on the cards....dp however is about to leave the house to get his train to work, hope they're running properly!

No grit here either!

SpottyTeacakes · 12/03/2013 07:01

So apparently the gritters were out bit as the roads were gridlocked they couldn't get to them Hmm

digerd · 12/03/2013 07:09

Yeah, they should have done it earlier then, BEFORE the snow arrived.

SpottyTeacakes · 12/03/2013 07:11

I have a feeling my shopping won't be delivered today Sad

MegGriffin · 12/03/2013 07:32

Snow day here too!

digerd · 12/03/2013 07:34

We have bright sunshine and no snow, but my delivery is 12-1 and anything can happen between now and then.

They managed to deliver in the last snow/ice period. Didn't think they would.

Hope yours arrives.

SpottyTeacakes · 12/03/2013 07:36

We're clear here too but it's coming from broadbridge Heath Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/03/2013 07:37

Is it possible that part of the issue was that the grit simply blew away? I'd have thought that in conditions like yesterday using a damp slurry like version of grit would stay on the road better rather than the usual granules (that we see around here)

Also, if you recall, the met office had the amber warning out for the SW initially yesterday. It was in completely the wrong place. Not defending what happened, but I'm wondering whether they were slow to respond to the change in emphasis in the forecast.
